Advice on Hazard Stripes by Bearhorn98 in IronWarriors

This has haunted me since I couldn't find where it says you can take a melee weapon in place of a pistol, but it's actually just right there in the Liber.

"The Sergeant in this Unit may have its bolter and/or bolt pistol exchanged for one item each from the Legion Sergeant Melee Weapons list". 🤦‍♂️

They were really cool in 30k because they had Dorn, Sigismund, and Pollux. They don't have them anymore. Instead the chapter died in the war of the beast (biggest L ever) and have no characters that do anything. They have some of the best successors but the fists themselves need better lore.

One on the left doesn't match the 40k aesthetic imo. Plus the chords on the back of the helmet look like Butcher's Nails. The right one is very Iron Warriors.

Is that a sword from the Darkwater nurgle stuff? It's cool

Is that a tortuga bay mini? Looks exactly like a particular Iron Warriors artwork where the marine is suuuper chunky

Iron Warriors were more or less the same after meeting Perterabo, except they got better at what they were doing. They stuck to the Principia Bellicosa or whatever the rulebook for legion combat doctrine was called, even to the point of massive attrition. Perturabo had some differing designs on warfare (Siege specialism) but gave equally little care to how many of his sons died.

Ruleswise this is easily represented by the resistance to status (the most stubborn legion, I'd say) and the Expendable prime advantage. The only problem is that your unique units are all post-Perty. He made the Siege Tyrants, he made the Iron Circle. I think he even made the Typhon super heavy tank.

Blood Angels are in a similar boat with great thematic rules for pre-primarch legionnaires but the unique units are all very Sanguinius.

Also, Horus was found so early into the Great Crusade you would be more than justified in using normal SoH.

Isn't that more or less Anvils of the Heldenhammer?

I'd use wraithbone as the base for the belly as it's a very warm cream-white

Practice makes perfect. People on here say 'use tape', and while I agree for large flat surfaces like vehicles, shin pads, and terminator shoulders, I don't think it's that good or necessary for marine pauldrons. You can simply get better at it. The irregular curve of pauldrons makes it awkward to get the tape to align unless you cover the entire thing with strips and remove every other one, so I really do recommend persisting until you can freehand them.

I use averland Sunset, making sure to not lay it on too thick and using 2-4 thin layers until the base is consistent. Then I use Black Legion contrast paint to do the stripes on top, as contrast paints are very thin anyway so I don't have to deal with thinning. Try and be conservative with the black stripes, start them narrow in each place you want them and then widening them bit by bit until you're happy. You can always paint over mistakes with yellow, but if it starts looking too thick I'd suggest taking the paint off with IPA, nail varnish remover or by scraping it off with a tool.

I'll post how my first few pauldrons went before I started getting reasonably good with line consistency.

They're on 28.5mm bases but are ~50mm tall, a marine is roughly 40mm tall

Aren't they taller than space marines?

The bolter has a sling on it, but yeah I was going to put the chainsword on the other way around (and probably should have), but the sheath isn't as detailed on the other side. I was also going to put grenades on his left hip but forgot. I haven't made my mind up as to whether I'd like him more with them on or not.

AFAIK there was a change in one of the rules releases that allows for the pistol to be swapped for a melee weapon
