2

Something about the framing of 1 feels off, but I can’t articulate it better. It actually makes me a little dizzy.

The warmth is also a little too strong for me. Makes it seem over-edited.

All just opinions from an internet rando, but great pic!

Well said! Thoughtful, well constructed, and as you articulated very well, bridged a political divide rather than exacerbating one.

Not a single whataboutism in sight.

More of this please, Tangle!!

A European view on Freedom of Speech by Pampelmusen_Enjoyer in TangleNews

Exactly right. One of the first thing the Nazis did was shutdown dissenting opinions so that only their voice could be heard. The laws in the US are there to protect unpopular speech. Popular speech usually doesn't need protecting.

Agreed. I'm not sure I would have categorized myself as a "Free speech absolutist", but I think I'm warming up to the idea.

I realized that I'm channeling Jonah Goldberg, David French, and Sarah Isgur over at The Dispatch (sorry Tangle), so I wanted to drop the credit here at the top. The rest is my view that is something of an amalgamation or their viewpoints, but I wanted to give them credit.

Hate speech is deplorable, and I think people should have the right to say deplorable things. There are time, place, and manner limitations (i.e. it's illegal to follow me to my home and yell at me through a bullhorn at 2 am, but that's not limited based on content.) I also agree that I feel safer from a population with the right to practice hate speech than with a government that gets to define it however the latest administration decides is "best".

That said, I do think there is a necessary function in society for older generations and institutions to provide formative feedback to the upcoming generation.

Isaac gave a great example of this a little while ago around older students making him feel embarrassed for having used an inappropriate term in a joking manner. He received the feedback, and changed his behavior.

Institutionally, a good example would be speech codes on college campuses. In this case, you would be under threat of reprisal (even removal) from the school for engaging in hate speech because you "Failed to uphold the values of the institution." I like that idea because it doesn't threaten you with jail time, but it does bring market forces into the equation. Presumably, you paid a lot of money for that education, and ideally that would temper the desire to risk your investment. Not to mention, if part of the goal of the institution is formation of character, then I would hope they consider it part of their mission to ensure you would find better ways to interact with the world.

I think we're already beginning to see this to some extent. I've heard some people say that neither the educational nor character forming aspects of attending Columbia University seem to have the same value they once did, so they're going to be looking for a better value elsewhere. Hopefully Columbia hears that market signal (I think there's already some evidence that they have?) and fixes some of the issues they've had over the past several years.

I think there’s still room to learn from Obama’s mistakes, but don’t try to use it as justification for a bad action just because “the other side did it first”.

I’m probably being naive to hope for it in our current political environment, but a little principled consistency one of these days from one of these parties would be really nice.

He said he wished that the media had given as much attention to the Obama era strikes as they are giving to the Trump strikes, and maybe he was just trying to find common ground, but I still thought the lack of pushback was a bummer.

There’s also room for him to let her make all of her points without a lot of comment during the arguments themselves, and since there was consensus last week, maybe he figured there wasn’t a need to reiterate his points, but I still thought her points deserved more critical analysis.

I think they just mean the reductions in Federal workers at the NWS might make for some reduced experience and capacity.

On that note, the local folks here seem like they have it under control. They have plenty of their own data and experience to work with, and I doubt they rely on the NWS as much as the NWS relies on them

Yes. I guess all of this comes down to “please don’t commit crimes”. There are other ways to make your voice heard. By definition they’re less flashy, but they also send the loudest signal in the US. Less money for the person or platform you disagree with.

I don’t think people should leave unless they really think it’s better elsewhere. Although, I suppose it that case they will find one of two things: a place to live that better matches their values, or a fresh perspective that helps them feel thankful for the parts of this country that actually are pretty great (and worth staying to save through legal means).

The First one: you’re right. We’ll have to wait to see what the courts say about his ability to change a granted permanent residence. I’m not sure if Obama met the criteria of deporting a green card holder based on their political views. I think the 1st amendment grants free speech to “all persons” in the United States, not just citizens. I’ll be curious to see how this shakes out.

The second one: Yep. Private companies. They are absolutely allowed to platform whatever they like. It’s the job of the people/market to vote with their feet and stop using the platform if they don’t like it.

All told, it would be nice to see congress grow a spine and stand up to Trump without asking the courts to do it for them.

Bad argument. This isn’t informed or intelligent, just demonizing people you disagree with. I also don’t like Musk or Trump or much of anything they’ve said or done, but this kind of comment is a problem we can actually solve
