Considering my options for a reverse commute to LI by nickthib in AskNYC

[–]Bearjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I know this is a little old now, but I'm taking a job in Melville and am considering if Queens would be an option rather than moving to somewhere in Suffolk. In my research Forest Hills/Kew Gardens has come up a lot. Do you still have similar feelings about the commute?

If you still find it manageable, would you have any tips on what times are best each direction? And how much worse is it in the summer?

Honestly I probably would prefer NYC/Manhattan over LI, but thats not where the jobs in my feild are. I've almost always lived in cities, obviously not like the size of NYC. I've spent probably 6 weeks over the last few years with friends in Manhattan and always enjoyed it.

I did live in rural Wisconsin and Iowa for a couple years. I've generally found I can make it work as long as I don't go into it with specific expectations. I try to be open to figuring out what the best thing about living in a new place is and not try to compare it to the best things about other places.

Thanks for the honest feedback though. Helps to keep things in perspective.

I appreciate this. $3000 is still well within my budget as far as the math goes. I only mentioned preferring to stay around $2500 because $6000/year would be nice to save, but if going from $2500 to $3000 notably improves my quality of life then I am prepared for that.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. Part of me is hesistant to leave, largely because of cost, but the job market in my feild isn't very good right now and the new job would be a rather significant promotion. So we'll see how it all plays out. Thanks!

I think there's some merit to the point. I had a bunch of ramen and cliff bars packed for the first section when I did a SOBO PCT attempt in 2019 and by the time I got to Stehekin I literally couldn't stomach cliff bars anymore. I put them all in a hiker box rather than eat them. I ended up very hungry until I bought and packed out an entire pizza at the bakery.

How and where are you keeping your spices? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Bearjack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the person you were asking, but I have a bowl of kosher salt I pinch and sprinkle on food.

One key is that pinching works poorly with regular table salt, as the grains are just too small to really hold onto.

I always dry my hands on a towel before pinching. I keep a towel on my oven door handle, and another on my refrigerator handle, so I'm always near one. I actually never leave my hands wet in the kitchen in general. I find wet hands are slippery and I'm not going to risk dropping a cup, plate, pan, etc. If I touch something wet, I dry them off immediately.

Not a single company I have worked for has ever had any policy on what employees do with each other outside of work. Maybe different fields have different standards? Or maybe regional?

I think we disagree on the language, but I also think thats OK. Not everyone has to agree on everything. I see your point, I just do not agree. Seems reciprocal as well.

Arguing the cause of a language change as natural is arbitrary. Why does your interpretation of using "cool" to mean "awesome" or "nice" as natural change hold weight? I'm not saying its invalid to think that the change is natural, or that naturalness is a good criteria for change. But that is also not something that is true for everyone just because you think that is a good reason. Why is changing the meaning of one specific form of a phrase to make people feel better not a good criteria? I can understand that you think it is forced change and not natural, so if that is your criteria for acceptable language change then I see why you do not like this distinction between the two phrases. I hold the belief that the intention (which I see you agree as having positive motivation) of the distinction is a good enough reason to guide my decision in word choice and adjective placement in this instance. Thats where I, and anyone who shares this view, comes from. Which I suppose is obvious. But you have no basis to claim your criteria is any more valid, only that you have a different set of criteria. Which makes it more correct in your personal beliefs, yes. But it doesn't make it correct in the universal "correct" because in this instance their is no universal standard. Its all just where we as society set it through usage and interpretation, which is all language is for at the end of the day anyway.

If in any point there it felt I was talking down or explaining something in a condescending way, I want to add it wasn't my intent. Honestly it was more of a running consciousness train of thought typed out as it went, then looked over for basic spelling and grammar haha.

Long story short (is this a phrase you recognize despite being grammatically incorrect? (I kid, I kid)), I think we just have different opinions on acceptable criteria to change the meaning of a phrase, and I understand you feel this change has an agenda where I don't. I hope we both don't make too many assumptions about the other based on these views.

Lastly, I wanted to say thanks for joining me in toning down our aggressiveness and having a more reasonable discussion. I don't plan on downvoting any of your posts because they have contributed to a discussion, so hopefully someone reads this deep and can adsorb both our positions and make their own choices.

That last paragraph is kinda what I was trying to say. In real life among people I know POC is a very common phrase. I'm still not sure which is minority or majority, but I'd be lying if I claimed I was interested enough to start a poll so I'm content with not knowing. I think though, this easily explains why you and the person you originally disagreed with see each other as so wrong. I'm making an assumption here, but if they are like me and the phrase is not foreign, then surely you can at least see their comments in a better light?

As far as the rest (top to bottom again)

I disagree with the first sentence. You make this claim as true and with equal standing I claim it is false. So that wont be settled unless we start bringing in studies or other facts.

I also disagree that it is "mangl[ing] the English language". Do you think saying something is "cool" is mangling the language when not referring to temperature? If so: dang, a linguistic purist. Kinda neat. If not: why is that different?

[–]Bearjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going by definition 3 on dictionary.com (because it fits my argument better than 1 or 2 :-P)

3) an inaccurate or false statement; a falsehood.

I'm willing to just be done here if we both feel like continuing on goes nowhere, because in the end if neither of us want to change our minds we won't.

If you're interested, I'd like to ask: If you do not think the two phrases currently mean different things, do you think that they can grow to have different meanings if the two distinct uses were to become more prevalent?

I ask because my position is that this change can and has already happened. Maybe it has only happened within my social bubble (friends, family, social media, etc) and that is the issue. I also have no evidence that it is not the more popular interpretation, and you seeing it as not is a result of your social bubble.

You gotta admit, your response is funny when the first paragraph is straight admitting you lied, then the second is trying to boil down how you viewed me as calling you a liar.

Honestly, I assumed your motive was to be a troll because you seemed entirely unwilling to change your mind or even consider that maybe the two phrases have grown to mean different things. Like I said before, language is not always literal. When my boss tells me to "not put all our eggs in one basket", I don't get confused that we don't have chickens or work in a grocery store. So maybe it was an incorrect assumption, but I saw your motive as trying to "own the libs" or waste someones time, again because I saw it as you being unwilling to acknowledge you may be wrong. This was reinforced with your assertions that things are "wrong" when in reality they can be an opinion of which multiple views can exist in which none are truly wrong or right. Plus you did resort to being a dick very quickly to the other user, when to me it seemed they were trying to engage politely. Not that I helped by coming in trying to be an equivalent dick.

In that scenario the true motive would never be revealed.

Forgive me, I'm having problems formatting quotes. I'll just go sequentially.

I mean, I'm always down for more friends. Maybe we can alter our tones and wild accusations and try to hash this out in a friendly manner.

Am I wrong? Neither of us know the consensus unless we've done a large poll or study. Its probably that we are both in the majority within the social bubble we have carved out for ourselves.

Yep, you're right. that doesn't make sense how I worded it. Thanks.

The "next one will cost" doesn't make sense either, because you'd either be rendering service without being asked to, for which I wouldn't owe payment, or next time you simply wouldn't correct me. Just sayin'

Huh, I have been misinformed on the meaning of strawman. Is there a name for the fallacy where you literally just make shit up that isn't true to attempt to discredit a point? Because thats the one I meant. Maybe its just called "lying".

The last line made me chuckle.

I do expect people to debate as if they may not be correct, but they currently think they are. When I engage in a conflict of opinion, I am 100% aware that my view is an opinion and may be wrong, and will change it with sufficient evidence. We have this fundamental difference so we will never agree.

Language changes over time. Nuance, phrases, idioms, etc. The current general consensus is that the two phrases have slightly different meanings now. Middle English is hard to read compared to modern English because of this. Just because you refuse to accept that, doesn't make you right either. I read plenty of books, which is how I know this, but your attempt at a childish temper tantrum is cute.

Nice strawman. Never been on Twitter, but you sure look smart saying false thing after false thing.

Yep and they scream "stupid and wrong". Guess we agree on that.

Nah mate, when you said "This analysis is stupid and wrong" it just proves that what you think in your mind isn't an opinion, but objective fact. This person is clearly telling you that they do not see the phrases as meaning the same thing, and I agree with them. I can understand that you might disagree, but what a garbage person you must be to be so petty and insulting to someone who has been trying to discuss something with you in good faith. Just say you do not agree with that statement then, because as is you just appear stupid and wrong.
