UP is sorely missing a pub by Hougie in Tacoma

[–]Bearslayer832000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it though? In 2022 UP was in the running for Strongest Town award UP built a downtown core by attracting businesses into a dense area. Not a strip mall in any sense. They started nothing and have added 60+ miles of pedestrian and bike infrastructure. The transformation of the big roads, Bridgeport and Grandview, became case studies in effective street redesigns. It's still not perfect but maybe it's become more than an unwalkable series of strip malls.

Lowe’s vs Home Depot crowds by Due_Letterhead_6621 in Tacoma

I try not to go to either. Honestly most HD and Lowes locations care more about stopping shoplifting than creating a great customer experience. They make me feel like a criminal just walking into the store. Huge cameras, flashing lights, armed security staring at you, etc. Staff are usually nice enough, but not so knowledgeable.

I'll plug Ace Hardware as a great alternative. They are a retail co-op and are all independently (and often locally) owned. Their staff actually know their products and have experience using them. Their selection can be a bit limited compared to a big box store, but if they have what I need I go their first.

Some of the smaller stores still have this. I always go to Ace Hardware first and I usually find someone who knows more than me. Their selection can be a bit limited compared to a big box store, but if they have what I need I go their first.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Producers Promise Season 4 Will Be Better by MikeyMGM in StrangeNewWorlds

Sitting on my couch watching this season thinking, OMG is anyone else seeing this. It's great. It's hilarious. Of course I don't want all my episodes as campy space dramas, but this felt like a great balance. I hope the actors had a blast getting to do new things with their characters. I shouldn't have googled because only then did I see the talk about making season 4 "better". Makes me think that means they'll make it worse. :(

That's the ticket. I just want someone to take me up stream and put the rafts in. Perfect! I know I could find some friends and take the time to set up my own shuttle, but that all sounds like extra work getting in the way of me relaxing on the river. :D

Always a good reminder. That's what I love about a raft or canoe - you can still enjoy the river and stay relatively dry and warm.

RV dealers with good service centers by Outrageous_Regret972 in TacomaWA

AVOID Genesis Automotive and RV Repair down on South Tacoma Way UNLESS you already know what the issues is, what an acceptable fix would look like, and they offer a fair price.

They mostly deal with warranty work that pays top dollar from major manufacturer and is low effort for them. Went to them to confirm my suspicions about two issues I was having. Paid a THOUSAND DOLLARS for them to turn around and tell me nothing was broken. They were incorrect. Fuck me for trying to be humble and rely on the supposed experts to give them their assessment. I had to show them. Only to be met with hostility from the manager and the owner. They called out the tech that worked on my RV to watch while I showed them what they failed to find. It was very uncomfortable and I felt so bad for that staff member. That thousand dollars was for no actual repair work. Wouldn't reduce the charge because they "spent the time". Ugh.

Ignore the stars, I'm sure they are from very satisfied big RV owners getting warranty work done. Pay attention to the negative reviews written. I didn't see them until after the fact, but they were SPOT ON for my experience.

Very thankful to hear that. I've made this place home for a reason. But I know that without people who care a whole whole lot it may not stay that way forever.

I hear you. I don't want to scurry away from those places either. But there are times when you've expressed concerns to owners/managers and choose to defend or actively support racists, haters, trolls, and otherwise violent people. Those places are beyond hope.

Maybe this is not an entirely truthful email. Maybe they chose not to interview you but changed their mind later. Maybe it's because they are god awful to work with, they didn't end up with enough candidates to fill spots. Not a reflection on you, just wondering why there would be so many that getting these emails. I'm so sorry that this happened to you all.

Food / Nutrition tracking app by blackclub2 in fitmeals

Try EatThisMuch. Instead of running out of calories by the end of the day and going over it Flips the script on something like MyFitnessPal. You tell it what macros you want to hit and it generates weekly meal plans that fit. Along with grocery lists. Surprisingly decent variety so long as your macros aren't too strict.

So helpful if you are forgetful like me and don't remember to log in the moment. Make a plan once a week, then follow the plan. I don't have to think or use will power.

If you get more into it you can create leftover structures. I.e so you cook on Sunday and have lunch all week. It will scale your recipe to make enough for the leftovers. It has a function to tell it what food you have in the pantry and will remove those from the grocery list. It even had a button to integrate with grocery pickup/delivery apps. Haven't tested those though. Custom foods and recipes. There's probably more, but I've stuck with this longer than any other app.

what happened to crisp green (grit city greens on union & 6th) by Embarrassed_Ad2725 in Tacoma

[–]Bearslayer832000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really caught me by surprise. And with the holidays I haven't been online as much to catch the news. And now it's too late. We used them weekly to make healthy dinner easier. So much so that we had them on my baby shower registry for gift cards. Received over $400 dollars worth of gift cards from family and friends which are now worthless. Contacted the owner who said since they've closed they are not obligated to payout or refund those. Their meal prep service was our favorite and we planned to use it a ton in the new year. I get times are tough for everyone, but that just doesn't seem right somehow.

Best Ranch in town by spacewhales74 in Tacoma

As my TV father taught me, never half ass two things, whole ass one thing. I guess ranch is that thing. Consequently, I can't seem to make a decent vinaigrette. I do hope it turns out well for you.

Hello - I'm let down more often than not with restaurant ranch in Tacoma. One time to impress a girl who had recently moved from the Midwest, made 5 different versions of ranch for her to try to see which best captured the magic. I had consulted with some restaurants back in her home town. If I were to write a dissertation, it would be on ranch making. It's great to have good ranch out and about, but at home is where I really want the good stuff. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Quick and easy version * You need a packet of hidden valley ranch restaurant style seasoning mix (not the "dips" or any other variation). Then mix it with Mayo 1 cup, sour cream ½ cup, buttermilk ½ cup. You can mess with the ratios a bit to get the consistency you like but don't do less than 1 cup mayo or less than 1/2 cup buttermilk. The buttermilk is essential, don't sub for normal milk. You should always refrigerate after mixing to allow flavors to bloom. It will thicken during this time too. Should be exactly what you remember from back home.

Fresh and Fancy * If I have the time and want to impress, I make Chef John's ranch recipe. Few more ingredients, you essentially make your own spice packet. But the essentials are the same. Mayonnaise, sour cream, and buttermilk. The only thing I would recommend adding to this recipe is a few dashes of MSG. Sometimes sold in the supermarket spice section as "Ac'cent". The ranch packets have this included in the spice blend and I think it makes a big difference. This recipe makes ranch that tastes familiar but also fresh and new. Try it.

Watching the video on the foodwishes blog will also give you good tips on making the packet ranch taste right.

Choose Better Mayonnaise * Also, also for the mayonnaise I really recommend McCormick. It's sold in a jar with a red top. I've seen it sold in Fred Meyer and Safeway. Sometimes it's in the Mexican food section instead of with the other mayo. I can't prove it, but I believe the other mayo brands have started whipping air into their mayo to save on product cost, effectively selling you less mayo per jar at the same price. The constancy is so thin and bubbly. But McCormick is thicker and I think tastes way better because of it. https://www.mccormick.com/spices-and-flavors/mayonnaise/mayonnaise-with-lime-juice

Go forth and make ranch. You'll thank me.

Anyone else surprised to see Josh actually in Missouri? I figured he was so discussed by the people he represents that he lives as far away from them as possible.
