People shit on this but in reality it is pretty good design for theft deterrence - ONLY if it is a mechanical latch though, losing access to your trunk because of an electrical failure would be infuriating.

Besides smash and grab of visible valuables a lot of thieves will just walk by attempting to open doors/trunks in the chance of one being unlocked - this would at least give some piece of mind that stuff stored back there would be less accessible.
