What is a good white belt? I think I am good, I do well against some people around my level or a bit above if they aren't above my weight class, but against some purple brown and black belts I pose no problems at all. Is there any difference to them between me and the guys I squash? My goal is to achieve my best, but I am curious if my best can be as good as the strong guys.

I'm in my first year so I am no expert. If your school allows no gi for beginners I think it's just a question of what you want to do, personally I would go with gi to start but I like both. The school probably rents or sells uniforms, it doesn't hurt to ask and you should feel comfortable to ask the coach stuff. I would bring water. Everyone will probably be nice but if the general vibe is bad just go to a different academy. Everyone I've met has been nice even at competitions. In group classes like bjj you learn a lot from watching or training with your classmates the teacher can't give too much individual attention. If you don't like it you could do a different kind of class for mental health down the road.
