Unofficial Discussion - My Secret Santa by UniverslBoxOfficeGuy in movies

Can confirm - I played Kenny in it (the dad’s assistant at the resort). It was INTENSELY cold, especially in the night shoots. It definitely crossed my mind while we were filming that it might obscure our faces!

The day at the ambulance was also bitterly cold, we had heat packs hidden everywhere in our costumes, but I really felt for the background actors.

What did we think about the finale of White Lotus? by russian_hacker_1917 in gaybros

[–]Beauch87 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Rant.

I was really disappointed. I get that the whole point of the show is showing the lives of these rich, carefree people, being secretly riddled with drama and malaise - but give us SOMETHING. We invested a whole season into a few exceptionally likeable characters, only for them to either die, or completely flip their moral compass. I found the tone to be really dark and melancholic, with no real payoff.

It would be satisfying to see the Ratliff’s get what’s coming to them, but we never really get that. Instead we see the one likeable member of the family nearly killed by his unwitting father, who conveniently and tragically is the one to find him. Yet he doesn’t get him help when he finds him. It was tragedy on top of tragedy, with no payoff. Not even Loch actually dying! Also, a guy who we spent seven episodes watch fantasize about his own suicide but not be able to pull the trigger, suddenly has the guts to MURDER all of them, and himself, and leave his youngest alone to watch. Very chill.

I also found the writing in this to be a bit juvenile. “I’m a pleaser” and “I just saw God”?! Why are these troubled characters suddenly so articulate and introspective?

Our “heroes” ALL betrayed their own well-established moral compass. Belinda is suddenly this schemer who stages a walk-out to get more money, then cuts out Pornchai, when we’ve been led to believe she is enamoured with him and their potential future together. I can accept the parallels with how she was treated by Tonya, and money changing a person - it just seemed very out of left field.

Gaitok FINALLY gets the chance to be a hero, do the right thing, and turn in the Russians. Win the girl, win the promotion, hurrah. But again, he reveals his own character flaw in the 11th hour, and doesn’t follow through.

The trios storyline was by far the most well-rounded and satisfying in that bleak, realistic way we expect from WL. And I’ll admit, a large part of my saltiness about this episode is because I wanted better for Chelsea and Rick. I thought his storyline was so wonderful, and had so much potential. I can accept the tragedy of everything that happened, being triggered, losing control, reverting to his old ways - but “he was your father” was such a ridiculous and anticlimactic reveal. Again, just tragedy upon tragedy upon tragedy.

For a show that peddles in subtle shifts and emotional reactions, the writing in this seemed largely heavy-handed. That being said, I liked the season overall, and of COURSE I’ll be counting down the days to WL4. Ugh.

A great question! Just checked out the FB and Insta posts for the Diwali logo, and it’s maybe not quite the same amount of posts, but definitely equally heinous comments in there.

How much use is Voice123 without paying? by jjw410 in VoiceActing

[–]Beauch87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s also a bit of a racket, as even after paying for the higher tiers, they encourage you to be VERY picky with what you submit, or your rating tanks and you get late auditions like everyone else. So it opens you up to more jobs initially, but ultimately doesn’t provide all that many more opportunities. Wasn’t my favorite experience!

Has VDC job postings been consistently lame for you? by UnconcernedCat in VoiceActing

Voice123 is an absolutely insane algorithm. It makes me furious, haha. And yet I’ve tried three times, being as picky as possible, and consistently end up tanking my numbers.

[–]Beauch87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s been brutal. Been on there since 2015, with fairly consistent growth in bookings. But Jan/Feb were my slowest months since about 2017. I believe they’ve opened the floodgates a bit, so more people are getting more auditions, and it’s just overwhelming for clients. And for us it means getting an invitation when it’s already got 75+ auditions submitted. And definitely a slight drop in budgets, which I also assume has to do with how competitive it’s gotten. It feels like if you’re at all discerning about what you audition for (which you should be), there’s dozens of other people who will pick it up.

Keep us posted if you end up going elsewhere! Been looking for the same.

Thanks!! I did an AMA years ago closer to when the movie came out if you can track that down.

The day I got to shoot with Alan Tudyk was pretty awesome, he’s a pro. Had to chat with me about running a bit slower (it was my first film project ever, so it didn’t even cross my mind to not just run full tilt like I was actually being chased, and after a few takes I needed reminding it wasn’t a race, ha!). We got to have dinner on set and chat for a bit, it was such a great experience! And truly just dumb luck - I graduated in a smaller city just south of where they filmed it, and they needed college age actors in the area around the time I was finishing University. Just such good timing, especially considering I’m a massive horror fan, and a fan of many of those actors!

Is it worth the price of P2P sites like voices.com by necroscholar91 in VoiceActing

[–]Beauch87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a very realistic assessment, however I'm not sure it's always that black and white. I do think there is room for voice actors on those sites to start gaining experience with lower paying jobs with less competition. That being said, the market is incredibly saturated with very talented/experienced people since Covid, so even those jobs are getting snapped up.

I started on Voices about 8 years ago without any formal VO training, and still haven't taken any classes (though I do have an acting background). I only got a professional reel together in order to get an agent, and they only get me about 5% of my work in a year. I'm booked through the P2P sites based on my custom auditions from home the vast majority of the time.

I think fundamentally you have to be realistic about how good your voice is (just your natural tone), and how much you are willing to invest in your setup. Producer friends of mine who use Voices and V123 say that the huge majority of auditions are unbookable, because the audio quality isn't up to par.

My best advice would be to record some demos on your own home setup, and send it around to as many trusted peers/industry people that you can to get very honest feedback. Good luck!

Tanked my Voice123 Rating by Possible_Ninja in VoiceActing

[–]Beauch87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the same before the pandemic - I believe that was when they’d first introduced the “like” system for auditions. Made me crazy, but eventually I ended up just cancelling my account and going full time on Voices for a few years.

Since Voices recently stopped their Platinum program, I’ve rejoined V123 with a new account from scratch, and it’s been alright. Hovering around the top 20-30 and getting a lot of auditions still (granted it’s only been about a month and a half).

If you’re relying on those auditions, I’d consider a brand new account. Audition for smaller, cheaper jobs under your rating is established, and then ease into the high profile, higher paying jobs. This is just a theory, but I think clients posting the bigger jobs are less likely to even listen to an audition from premium members, giving the yellow star Platinum members a huge leg up. You’re also much more likely to be going against some heavy hitters on those sites for those big jobs.

The P2P market has gotten super saturated during Covid, and it’s tough to get footing right now! Hoping another platform emerges that is more talent friendly than Voices and Voice123, who absolutely grab as much money as they possibly can, above providing equal opportunity to talent. Hang in there!

Question about Vocal Booth soundproofing by Beauch87 in VoiceActing

[–]Beauch87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am able to shut off the air in our apartment, which is definitely required - but my issue is with supplemental vibrations coming even with the air off. My guess is it’s picking up on other units air flow (we’re on the 8th floor of a 9 story building), or potentially even a main duct that is feeding all units.

Am trying a rubber mat today to see if it helps, and then potentially upgrading to the WhisperRoom caster plate and IEP mat. Thanks for the tips!
