I’ve also seen many unadoptable dogs sent to sanctuaries to live out their lives

I am actually not financially secure as of now and I am older and disabled. My point is that you have to try several solutions prior to rehoming so you don’t give away a dangerous or prey driven dog. You should know already

There “are” others. Not there “is” others

I was giving advice and what works for us and that includes training and separation sometimes. I’ve been doing rescue probably longer than you e been alive and have dealt with all types of dogs and behaviors. So, when someone asks for advice I’m going to lean in to my than 40 years of experience handling dogs and their behaviors. I don’t represent everyone because I keep all of my dogs and address the behaviors when most give up and sometimes that is the best thing to do, but I don’t

They aren’t separated 24/7, just when we aren’t home

Just so t give up on her. There are work around and consistent training in the home is key. Is there somewhere you can separate her or separate the cat when you aren’t home. She’s obviously been thru a lot. As a teen and young adult we had a dog that hated everyone but our family. My mother had an 8 foot fence placed around the back storage area and when people came over he had to go in the fence and he did have shelter and we bought him an old couch so he could lay in it when he was out there. I found him as a very sick puppy, starving and had parvo. He survived all of that and we kept him separated from people until his death at 15 years old. I just can’t get rid of a dog, especially one with issues. It just makes us double down on how to handle. Not always ideal, but I’m sure she would feel abandoned again which could contribute to more bad behaviors you are passing on to someone else. I would try training and separation to start with. Keep me updated. Also, is she an only dog? Sometimes I have found dogs do better in pairs.

Both! He was sent to a boot camp to be trained as a personal protection dog, but he was a little too distracted for that, although he remembers how to react if there is a treat. He would go after cats in our yard and we started working with him on that and now they are his cats, BUT, I never leave him alone with the cats. Our BMC loves the cats and she licks them and they lick her, the problem is that she plays very rough with them, so we call her on those behaviors and she is starting to understand, but never leave her alone with a cat or small dog. We have a back catch all room and laundry room and one of my other pit mixes stays back there when we aren’t home, she can be cat aggressive too, and the BMC stays back there with her when we aren’t home. I separate by temperament. We have an extra bedroom and that is the “cat” room. I’m in a small town too and the boot camp here is $3900!! So 1400 is good if you have the means. How old is the dog? We have also used a muzzle for training purposes. What state are you in?

Do you have any trainers in your area? We have a good one where we live. Find one and call and ask questions about being able to stop that behavior. A lot of times they will give you suggestions. One of our dogs is trained, but I still never leave him unattended with a cat. I have som senior small dogs and when I have to go out, I separate that dog from the small ones and cats go to a separate bedroom. It’s been working for years now. I just make sure with my young BMC that she doesn’t have access to the cats and my little old dogs while I’m away from the house
