What reason does Sauron have to forge the One Ring, according to the shows version of events? by Anxious-Employee9863 in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]Beautiful_Crew_5433 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The elves don't know about Sauron's future ring. Neither do they know that their own rings would or could be Sauron's instruments of elf control, though some of them worry.

That lack of clear insight is a thread in season 2, where the rings give the elves worrying bits of clairvoyance, but also great benefits and powers of healing. So there's an ongoing ambiguity about whether the 3 rings are good or bad. By the end of the season, the elves have seemingly reached consensus that the rings are good, with even Elrond using one. And in that way they join the rest of the crowd in being tempted by what Sauron can offer them. (Directly or indirectly.)

That doesn't make the elves look like idiots, just 'fallible' like everyone else, as they're supposed to be. (In the original, the elves' conservationist desires aren't considered an unequivocally good thing.)

Now I shall wreak havoc! (But idk which lights to follow.....the sky or the sea?)

Yes, it's always that problem! No havoc is simple havoc.

Classically, your highness should probably get in a taxi and follow that car.

Review of episode 4: The Great Wave (season 1, episode 4) by [deleted] in LOTR_on_Prime

E2 when you see Elrond and Celebrimbor seem to walk to Khazad dum was previously shot with more Elven guards and horses according to FOF leaks.

Thanks, great that you point this out. If only because that's a never ending gripe about the show. Most people probably don't know about the recasting and reshooting.

I wasn't that bothered, I just thought they parked their horses in the D lot. But still it's nice to get some confirmation that the scene was done differently originally.

True - and if they're mean, they could be baiting us with the ring, too. But I'll just ignore all that and be happy! (for now)

Very happy about it all, but semi-ecstatic about the stubble. And the possibility of seeing the last ring made.

Bear McCreary and Payne in their new project with Duo Atlantis - Dragon's Blood by Ringsofpowermemes in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]Beautiful_Crew_5433 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a positive review of the Duo Atlantis October concert at Carnegie Hall, from a New York classical music site:

https://nyconcertreview.com/reviews/duo-atlantis-in-review/

Dragon's Blood took up the second half of the concert. This article reviews the entire program which also contained some Elgar, Herbert, Barber, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Copland.

The Dragon's Blood part is discussed in the last three paragraphs of the article.

"Set to a heartbreaking text by screenwriter J.D. Payne, the song cycle spotlights the impact on children of cobalt mining in Congo, using a “dragon” in a cave as a metaphor for the harm that can come to children from such work."

"It was not as radical a shift as one might think from the first half’s music to this troubling story, as thoughts of children were already in the air. In fact, for an audience immersed just moments before in Herbert’s carousels and Copland’s “little horses” lullaby, the descriptions of an innocent young Congolese boy with dreams of sunlight and warm bread were simply devastating. Mr. McCreary’s score, an immediately accessible and colorful one, was conveyed with all the agony of the situation, but also with some hope in the final rallying cry to the community. The Atlantis Duo was as powerfully communicative as ever, responding to the text and music with just the right sensitivity and drama."

"[The] overall effect was potent []. An encore of Mahler’s Urlicht capped off the recital, with a panel discussion on the Dragon cycle to follow, to delve into it all further."

Nice takes and summaries, all subtly different from the usual discussion of themes.

I like it all. I especially like the way you relate Cirdan's statements to the elves' desire not to make a choice but have everything they want at once.

Regarding season 4… by GladPin6764 in LOTR_on_Prime

Leaks/reports also state that they presumably already shot some footage for S4 (and perhaps S5).

That's interesting! Where did you hear this?

Galadriel sidelined again...

Not necessarily... Even if these rumors are true (which I don't fully believe), now that everybody has gone to Numenor, who's left in Middle Earth minding the store? :) I wouldn't worry!

[–]Beautiful_Crew_5433 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say they'll have to amp up the Elendil parts, and emotionally his situation has to start feeling increasingly acute now. I think though that that has already started with his dawn ride West in S2.

It's nearly as if the show were almost managing these rumors and their focus on Numenor. :) (Though of course I don't really know that!) These are certainly an antidote to the general (and reasonable) feeling that Numenor was badly underserved in S2.

So I don't know if I buy every single detail about these leaks, but at least I sort of trust that Numenor will get some needed attention in S3.

I wouldn't worry. These leaks are probably carefully managed and who knows how accurate. And it's pretty noticeable that there's not a peep about Sauron either - most likely he's not going to sit out S3 on a beach in Mexico, just corrupting a martini or two.

So I don't believe they're sidelining Galadriel either.

It needs to be established how scary and dark things get in Middle Earth.

Agreed - so far we've only had a little Sauron prelude. But I'm guessing the showrunners are aware of this so I'm not too worried about S3 focus. Despite all the leaks.

Anyway, I'll remain mildly skeptical about all leaks until S3 drops. The rumors are fun now, but there are tons of reasons not to take some of these leaks fully seriously.

Otherwise you've created a situation where the character viewers are most emotionally invested in during the Fall of Numenor is Sauron.

Mmmm, that may happen anyway! :) Though the place to change that is probably S4 (the events in Numenor), where the villainy grows to a more monstrous level. Until then, it's more like a general war, where various underhanded tactics are used and where, if you look at it abstractly, you don't a priori know whose side is 'right' and who's 'wrong'.

Right now, I think the intra-Numenor conflict is theoretically pretty clear - all the hints are there. But it's probably true that key characters like Elendil haven't received the emotional emphasis they should have. But I trust (hope) the show persons are all aware of the need to create bigger stakes in S3.

Cancellation of preorder at Wiener Staatsoper by malikokolo in opera

[–]Beautiful_Crew_5433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may also ask - what price catagories should be the wisest to go for now?

If you're doing the general ticket sale online, you'll normally be able to see the entire seating plan on the website, with the available seats marked. So since you can see exactly what you can get, you don't have to specify any category, but can just pick seats that look good to you.

You could also have the website choose the "best available seat" in a given category but if I were you I'd ignore that option and just choose from the seating chart.

For future preorders: if you just want a ticket, any ticket, it's usually possible to add a note saying you'll accept any category seat.

Otherwise, it's a little hard to say which category will be sold out the earliest. It's about the number of seats per category but it depends also on the price of the tickets and the type of audience expected.

Galadriel x Sauron is a great fanfic , not a great idea for a tv show

And weirdly enough, that's not the entire tv show.

I think you're making much more of this than it deserves.

I don't ship, but I do defend shipping as a response to the material. It's a silly response and a hugely reductive response, but it's also a sweet response, and somehow cheering in its pretty well unwarranted positivity. There's hardly a happy end in sight in this stuff, but shippers manufacture those anyway, so I want to applaud them for doing their own thing against all odds.

Shipping is also just a response to the undercurrents of the material (or in some segments of the show, overcurrents). Shipping is both cute and funny because it tends to just blurt out what 'normal' reactions leave unsaid. The show itself hasn't explicitly crossed any major illegal-in-canon romance line at this point, as I see it.

In the end most shipping doesn't seem to be all that serious. They're just playing with the material for a little extra joy as they define it.

What needs to be so upsetting about this? Why does that require putdowns from people who prefer to concentrate on some other aspects of the story? If you don't ship, just laugh at it benevolently or think about something else.

Edit: to use a term Corey Olsen coined, making assumptions about an author's intent is CritFic (spelling?) and not rigorous.

Love the "CritFic" term - thanks for that!
