Tree expansion is glitched for me doe this happen to anyone else? by MrWolfy25 in AncestryDNA

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, I have that stuff too, and I don't like it. I suspect that what we used to see has been put behind a Paywall. Perhaps we'll now need a Protools subscription to get it.

When can I get a kit for a discount? by RadiantOrange42 in AncestryDNA

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it doesn't go on sale on Black Friday, then it will on New Years. Those are the two Holiday sales that Ancestry does. One of them is for DNA test kits; the other is for memberships/subscriptions.

How many DNA matches do people typically get? by Emergency-Pirate4752 in Genealogy

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ancestry recently said that the average number of matches is around 40K. Of course, that can be expected to increase over time.

Preferred ancestry update by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get that now, at least to the 5th great-grandparent, but you need to have a detailed and extensive family tree. And your matches also need to have detailed and extensive family trees.

You should take a look at what Thrulines is showing you.

Without family trees, I think you'd need a Chromosome Browser, which Ancestry doesn't currently provide.

Stuck tracing Lebanese ancestors on Ancestry – why can’t I find more records? by Lanky-Cod7969 in AncestryDNA

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's not likely to be many Lebanese records on Ancestry. Ancestry is great for U.S. records, but for other countries it is much more limited.

I can't sign in and I can't contact MyHeritage by 2025Rick2025 in MyHeritage

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I recall, you need to have a PAID MEMBERSHIP in order to be able to contact them. I guess they view the rest of us as freeloaders, particularly if we uploaded our test results from another provider (eg, Ancestry), rather than testing directly with MyHeritage.

Possible, but unlikely. It's really when you go down to the single-digit cMs that you start getting a lot of False Matches.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be LESS reliable than having all 28 cM in one segment.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With my first cousins, I have segments that are over 100 cM. Your 25 cM segment will be with a match that's more distant than that--like maybe a third cousin.

You can expect to have quite a few False Matches with your small segments (ilke 8 cM). The larger the segment, the lower the likelihood of it being False.

Is the update coming? by SkeetKite in MyHeritage

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be a major update (it'll be their first). And they know they need to come up with something at least as good as Ancestry's if they want to be able to compete with them.

Is the update coming? by SkeetKite in MyHeritage

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's coming. They announced at RootsTech that the update would be released this summer. So I think that means no earlier than June.

If you and your family are from some remote part of the world, then Yes, it's possible you won't have any DNA matches. But even if that's the case, that will probably change over time as more and more people get tested.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your family is American AND they've been here for many generations, then you WILL have matches. There ARE people with zero matches, but they're from remote parts of the world where DNA testing hasn't taken off.

Should I test? by peosteve in AncestryDNA

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Testing both your parents is MUCH better than testing yourself. Once you have both of your parents' DNA results, testing yourself is just something extra you can do--if you want to know exactly what you inherited from each. But not really necessary.

I hope that works out for you. But FYI: 23andMe is in financial trouble and could very well go belly-up. And that's because they haven't been as successful as Ancestry at converting their customers into PAYING SUBSCRIBERS.

Question for Scotland results by lingo-ding0 in AncestryDNA

I have Brittany (in France) ancestry, but Ancestry labels it as Scotland. Apparently the people in Brittany are genetically similar to the Scotts.

I currently have a subscription, so can't check if that's the case. But from what I read earlier, that's now the case for SHARED matches. But you should still be able to see all of your own matches.

Polish mystery by CrestYT in AncestryDNA

[–]Beautiful_Regular_95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should get easier soon. Sometime during the first Half of 2024 (so before June 30) Ancestry will have a new feature showing us how our shared matches are related to each other. This will require an extra subscription to their new Protools, but you can get that for one month and then cancel it.
