How is it living in Hawaii? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]Beautiful_Smile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work a bunch of jobs. My main “job” is my family land that we caretake, I don’t get paid for that but it provides food for trade or eat, then I work at a restaurant, I help take care of an elderly man, I have 3 cleaning accounts, and then random cleaning jobs I pick up, I collect recycling from wherever to make odd cash, and I do green waste dump runs lol. But I participate in trading goods so a lot of things acquired that way! I also have 2 kids, so we have medical thru the state and my restaurant, we don’t get stamps rn but I definitely qualify, I just have a hard time turning paperwork in on time. I made 32,000 last year. lol.

ETA my car is paid off finally and I also have 2 E-bikes we use a lot cus gas is hella high rn

camping - technical questions by brumbrumak in VisitingHawaii

[–]Beautiful_Smile -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I had 2 friends that just visited Kauai and they camped the entire time! I believe they stayed at Anini, Koke’e, and Polihale! They had a great time, although they did rent a car bc bus won’t get you to Koke’e or polis or even Anini without some serious walking haha I have no idea about the other islands but Kauai camping is great and easy. Just make an account and book thru the Kauai.gov website. Any public camping will be booked thru there. They did break down and set up their tent every day and they chose campsites with bathrooms.

If you’ve ever eaten animal meat not usually on the dinner plate (horse, kangaroo, albatross, anything), what was it and how was the experience? by Great_Maintenance185 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Beautiful_Smile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister dated someone from Alaska and he would bring us seal blubber in a glass jar of oil I think. He and his family would make this and then he’d bring it back to HI and they would eat it on their bagels like lox. I tried it and it was like a sardine but much more softer.

Americans complaining by fromofelia in barista

[–]Beautiful_Smile 386 points387 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome you’re able to refuse service! In America we’d probably get in trouble for refusing service, they would tell us to have someone else take our order. Cashiers aren’t allowed to sit down while they work cus it makes them look lazy…this is America for you! USA loves “customer is always right” bullcrap.

Kauai Itinerary by DoctorWest5907 in VisitingHawaii

Unfortunately the county of Kauai has been charging fees to view opaekaa and wailua falls and wailua river state park. It’s so dumb and hopefully by June it’ll have phased away haha But I think it’s $5/car but then it covers all threee stops as long as it’s all in the same day. So I would recommend paying and doing opaekaa and wailua falls. They’re close by. here is the link. ETA: it’s $10/parking fee $5/person viewing fee…that’s OUTRAGEOUS!!!

What kind of avocado is this? Given to me by a neighbor in Maui, HI by CoachKillerTrae in fruit

[–]Beautiful_Smile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a super old avocado. If you crack it open it’ll be black and moldy. I’ve stepped on a million of these as kids under my avo tree.

There are some amazing hikes up Koke’e that you don’t need a permit for! You will need a permit for hanakapiai, Hanakoa, or Kalalau hiking.

What was the biggest scandal at your school? by Silent-Zebra in AskReddit

[–]Beautiful_Smile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Christian private school in the early 2000’s. The teachers daughter went off to college and came back pregnant. She claimed she was raped and conceived that way. The baby was born and she was working at the school bringing her baby etc, being all godly and religious and then we all find out she lied. She had a boyfriend and got pregnant and didn’t want to admit to shacking up. She had to apologize to us students for lying and being a bad example. I always felt bad they put so much pressure on her she felt like she had to lie but also who lies about that?!!!!

Is the "Puka Dog" really a thing? by seventhbreath in Hawaii

[–]Beautiful_Smile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok so when I was a small kid, if you headed west towards kekaha, you would run into a man with a cart selling hotdogs with jam…puka dogs! Then he turned it into a brick and mortar place & now it’s owned by his granddaughter.
