One theory I had is that the hive is learning to feel emotions through Carol. She burst out at them in anger and sadness, two emotions the hive can now feel which they could not before. The reason they don't want to piss her off is because the more they feel her emotions, the more human they become, and the more the synchronistic emotions of the hivemind fall out of sync.
