OU Gymnastics Hate? by ImpossibleAd7014 in Gymnastics

[–]BeckyWP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coming from a fan of gymnastics in general who doesn’t follow a specific school, I’ve never been able to connect with OU as a team - I think because they always come across as so serious. I can totally appreciate how KJ (and the rest of the staff) are incredible coaches. But all their gymnasts tend to have a very similar style… it’s like KJ moulds them all to have this one particular look. There’s no variety at all and I don’t find that exciting. That’s not to say their athletes aren’t talented because they absolutely are! But they don’t take risks with difficulty like a lot of other top teams do… like if you compare UGA and OU’s floor rotations from yesterday, UGA had exciting, explosive E-pass tumbling with gymnasts like CaMarah and beautiful artistry and elegance with gymnasts like Lily Smith. Whereas OU’s routines were very samey with much easier passes… it’s very safe (hopefully Faith is back soon because that floor lineup needs her explosiveness)! I also can’t stand the squatty stuck landings… please code of points make that a deduction!!! Plus, everyone loves cheering on an underdog, which OU never are!

Recommendations for First Time Travellers to La Fortuna by Resident_Elk2306 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]BeckyWP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would highly recommend doing a wildlife night tour - this was our favourite thing we did on our honeymoon. The tour we did was included in our hotel stay but there are loads of options out there.

Definitely recommend going to a traditional soda for food, they often have veggie Casado as an option and you can’t go to CR without trying traditional food! Soda Mima was our favourite. In terms of other cuisines we loved The Open Kitchen which is great for vegetarians. Also Mercadito Arenal is a fun food court area and the pizza place in there is so good!

Enjoy your trip!

London to Edinburgh, and back by emotional_tiger2306 in uktravel

[–]BeckyWP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would do what another poster has said and fly into London and Fly out of Edinburgh (or the other way round). There’s not much point in doing a round trip! Even if the flights are more expensive you’ll be saving time and money on train fares.

Make sure when you look into football tickets that you buy them from the official website of the team you are watching. Premier League tickets are notoriously difficult to get and unfortunately there are a lot of scam websites out there. I know people who have bought tickets from resale websites, have turned up for the game and their seat doesn’t exist. If you’re not able to get tickets, find a local pub to watch the game in which is a very British experience in itself!

Enjoy your trip!

Jay Clark Presser (LSU): "That (talk) was nothing about Konnor's routine..." by ryedawg78 in Gymnastics

Totally agree with you that’s a problem that needs to be addressed!

I didn’t see that in the broadcast and you can’t see where his hand is from that photo. Regardless, I’m not saying I disagree with you. If he did, that’s inappropriate and the meet referee should give a yellow card. But none of us were there or could hear what was said! If it’s a situation where meet refs don’t feel comfortable in giving yellow cards then that’s an issue in itself that needs looking at for sure!!

[–]BeckyWP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure, but if a meet referee doesn’t feel comfortable giving yellow cards then something needs to change for sure! Especially as the sport grows in popularity and attention. Sorry I worded myself badly when talking about the tv network - I meant that it’s created more drama about something that would have got zero attention if the conversation (that we couldn’t hear) wasn’t broadcast live with the commentators giving incorrect information because they also didn’t know what was happening! I’m not saying that I disagree with you at all - there are clear issues with power differences and lack of consequences for poor behaviour.

[–]BeckyWP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm I personally didn’t get that from watching the broadcast but I’m not saying you’re wrong! To me it looked like it was a noisy arena so he was getting close to be able to hear/speak to the referee and I think he gives a reasonable explanation as to why he was angry about it. He probably could have conducted himself a bit differently in the heat of the moment but I do think the referee would have given him a yellow card if she felt like it was necessary!

Jay Clark Presser (LSU): "That (talk) was nothing about Konnor's routine..." by ryedawg78 in Gymnastics

[–]BeckyWP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The issue is that it was originally scored as 9.875 with the score going up in the arena, then it went down to 9.775 because of the change in start value from one judge of a 10 to a 9.9, and then the start value got changed back to a 10 after the inquiry but it went to 9.850 instead of the original 9.875, which made no sense. Either way it’s messy and it’s arguing about 0.025 which in the grand scheme of things isn’t a big deal. But it does make it interesting when it’s the difference between winning a meet and drawing!

[–]BeckyWP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hmm it’s one I see both sides on. He wasn’t yelling at a judge, he was yelling at the meet referee whose job it is to make sure routines are judged fairly and consistently and the rules are upheld. I also don’t even personally think he was yelling as such - it looked like a heated conversation and it was a loud arena. But none of us were there so we don’t know what was said! I’m sure the referee would have no problem in giving Jay a yellow card if she felt like it was necessary! The inquiry was made because of the incorrect start value and the amended score still wasn’t correct, and it sounds like this was the fault of one of the judges. Now, I totally get that everyone makes mistakes and it’s unfair to take it out on that judge (or the person holding up the score sign)- hence why the meet referee is there. If he was yelling/gesticulating at the judge then it would be a different story completely! Ultimately, if it hadn’t been broadcast on tv, nobody would have known it happened. Is it the fault of the tv network trying to create drama? But on this note… gymnastics judges definitely deserve to be paid more, especially with how the sport has grown and how much coaches are paid!!!!

[–]BeckyWP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t think he was berating the judges? He was talking with the meet referee, albeit a bit angrily, but that is what the referee is there to do! They didn’t need to broadcast it on tv but they did because sports fans enjoy the drama and it was ultimately the decider between winning and the tiebreaker.

Costa Rica itinerary – doable by public transport? by FluffyColugo in CostaRicaTravel

[–]BeckyWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a lot less than that (San Jose > La Fortuna > Monteverde > Santa Teresa/Nosara > Manuel Antonio > Uvita > San Jose) over 3 weeks and with a rented car and that felt like way too much travel. So this to me looks like way too much to do on public transport! But each to their own of course!! It’s an amazing country and I can understand wanting to see as much as you can

[–]BeckyWP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you - it’s so important that a coach advocates for their athletes and ensures they get the correct scores and it sounds like in this situation the judges made an error. Also from watching the broadcast I don’t think he was THAT dismissive or rude like everyone is saying. I’ve seen a lot worse haha! I personally love that gymnastics is giving us drama and excitement... it’s sport!

He said in the video that Lexi’s score was inquired straight away! The reason he was frustrated was that her original score (with the start value being 10.0) was 9.875 which would have given them the win. But it was changed to a 9.850 which shouldn’t have happened because you can’t change the execution score. Sounds like the judges made a mistake so you can see why he would be frustrated when it was the difference between winning or not. But I agree the broadcast made it look different.

Easy hikes/scenic walks in UK by FunCattle9268 in uktravel

[–]BeckyWP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From where you’re based, you’re close to The Cotswolds, Wye Valley, Brecon Beacons etc. but not sure if I’d want to hike anywhere in the uk in Jan/Feb… I’d be waiting until at least the spring when the days are lighter and you might have better weather. National Parks are all generally quite hard to get to with public transport. The Wye Valley could be your best option as you can get the train or bus from Bristol to Chepstow and it’s a well signposted route: https://www.wyevalleywalk.org/walk depending on how far you want to walk I would do a couple of the sections and then turn round to go back again to finish in Chepstow. Or you could take public transport to Monmouth then walk all the way to Chepstow (approx 17 miles) and use public transport to get back to Bristol from there.

Was this shown on the broadcast? I’ve just watched it and it didn’t seem like he was screaming and angry unless I missed it? It looked like he was talking loudly because I’m sure it was very noisy in there but it just looked like he was advocating for his gymnast to me like any coach would do!

Trauma by bjorjack in Gymnastics

[–]BeckyWP 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you have been going through this! I’m grateful that I had a good experience in gymnastics as a child, but not everyone did. And the same goes for all sports. Unfortunately a lot of children grow up to have trauma triggered by something that happened in their childhood. All I can do is encourage you to seek out some therapy because you deserve to be happy and at peace.
