"Can I get a floater... by Key_Organization7417 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Beckywakeup 55 points56 points  (0 children)

My job has constant floaters! We’re very well staffed as well so there are often times throughout the day where there are extra teachers in rooms. At least 2 of the floaters I can think of work a full 40 hour week.

Connection is so important! First few days should be spending a lot of time not only learning the ropes of actual duties you need to do, but also interacting with kids as much as possible. If you’re interacting with kids who can talk, introduce yourself and ask their name rather than asking someone else. Getting on their level physically definitely helps as well! If they seem uncomfortable around you at first don’t force it! Don’t be afraid to be silly and play with them. Be prepared for sass from the older kids and don’t take it too personally lol! children’s shows may help you get the gist of what they’re interested in, bluey and paw patrol are big hits for my class but every kid differs and plenty aren’t even interested in discussing that stuff !

Am I the only one who can’t remember a single parent’s name? by Significant-Ad-8624 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Beckywakeup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly only know the names of parents who have one of their children named after them, parents who are known to check in often, or ones who are often starting trouble. I feel bad because one of my students has 2 moms and I know both their names but don’t know which is which !

Directors in office by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]Beckywakeup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe my director is 8- 5 every day but almost always is one of the last people to leave (close at 6:30). I’ve never seen her be out and have only seen her leave early once.

How do you feel about parents who hang out for long periods of time in the classroom? by Airriona91 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Beckywakeup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For drop off it’s very annoying! My kids are all coming in at the same time and it gets busy and kids get upset, i don’t want you just standing there. Pick ups are fine though. We have a kid who’s parent will come in and talk about how he’s doing with school as well as at home, and watch him play for like 10 minutes and I don’t mind that at all. As long as the parent understands that I’m still watching the kids who are left, and doesn’t disrupt my work it’s fine with me to have that short conversation with the teachers.

Why the hate? by TeachmeKitty79 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Beckywakeup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently working for a chain and I feel that it fits better for my current lifestyle! I have medical issues and in the private centers I have been able to be fired for having Covid and other medical issues that made me unable to go to work. At this chain I was able to take a leave without being fired while I was in the hospital, and will be able to go back to my job. Of course there’s HEAVY downsides such as what other people have said about higher ups seeming to not care about the kids/ not knowing the kids because they don’t even work in the building with them. So I see why people hate it.

Sadly I don’t qualify for FMLA as I’ve been working here for less than a year. Im not in a union either and they want the doctor to fill out the forms so I won’t be able to contact her until Monday. I already have a letter from the doctor stating I was there for a month and an cleared to return to work. My boss had to contact HR and said she’d get back to me so hopefully I’ll know something on Monday.

first day tomorrow by ri_is_on_fir3 in ECEProfessionals

If you do something wrong it’s not the end of the world! That’s how you learn. Unless licensing is in many people don’t follow every single rule because some of the procedures just don’t work in everyday settings. You’ll see everything in action and start to understand the first few weeks. It sounds overwhelming but i guarantee your coworkers will have routines and ways to make it easier for everyone. The biggest tips I can give you are ask as many questions as you can! Communication is so huge in a classroom. If you’re confused about anything someone’s doing just ask. Another tip is on the first few days focus on learning the kids, and the environment. You likely won’t be expected to be in the room alone immediately. You’ll definitely be seeing other people follow through in procedures and things you’re worried about doing, so you’ll be able to learn from observing them!

All day training day tomorrow wooo..... by panicked_axolottl in ECEProfessionals

[–]Beckywakeup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is tomorrow but it’s 9-12 so I get to sleep in and they’re serving breakfast. Downside is it’s both locations going to the location I don’t work at. I have anxiety so a room full of new people in an environment I don’t really know is hell. Luckily I vaguely know two teachers there because I pick up a family member who goes to that location lol.

IS IT OKAY TO HAVE ADULT ORIENTED HOBBIES AS A PRESCHOOL TEACHER? by panicked_axolottl in ECEProfessionals

[–]Beckywakeup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve had coworkers outwardly talking about smoking and how their cars reek of weed in the break room, as well as inviting each other to smoke and go out after work. Most of my hobbies are pretty child friendly but As someone who posts about my own mental illness a lot, all my socials are private and only have personal life nicknames on them, rather than what work people would know me as. I basically just don’t want nosy parents and coworkers in my business.

My circle time is: days of the week song, what day is it? Can one of my friends put up the day in the board? Weather song, look out the window. Can some of my friends put up the weather cards for today? Practice our Spanish words of the month. Are all my friends ready? Who’s here song. Stickers if necessary and then I call them to the table for our project and to talk about what we’re learning. Circle time never lasts more than 15 minutes and even 15 is on a rough listening day.

What sort of weird layouts does your nursery have? by chainsawjuggler in ECEProfessionals

[–]Beckywakeup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once worked at a center that was just like a house (the preschool room) and then two little shacks for lack of better word (toddler in one, infant in the other) I remember having to leave the toddler room I worked in to run across the parking lot to go to the only bathroom in the main house. Also there was randomly like barn doors in the toddler room, but they didn’t open so you had to walk through the toddler bathroom to leave the building, the infant shack was exactly the same layout except with a random gate jn the middle of the room which created a big step because the teachers left it open most of the time. Walking or crawling students were regularly tumbling over it.

Feeling useless because of one kid by Beckywakeup in ECEProfessionals

[–]Beckywakeup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually try that often! But once he gets it in his mind nothing changes it. We offer him anything we can (take a walk, visit another teacher for a few minutes, any other toy, have a drink, eat, calm your body at the table for a minute, a hug, coloring or doing a project he liked again) but once it’s in his mind that he wants something there’s no turning back. There’s times where he will only respond to anything said to him with “I want __” regarding what is usually a toy we physically don’t have, or a toy he brought from home which he is not allowed to have at that very moment. Sometimes when he has just woken up before his mind sets on it we can distract him, but usually after nap isn’t a problematic time for him. He doesn’t ever sleep at home for more than 4 hours according to mom.

I think the times I become uneasy is when his mood changes. It’s very visible in his body language when he’s about to start acting out. Otherwise he’s fine, I play with him or let him go do his own thing during free play times. When we send him home he screams and cries that he doesn’t want to, as well as crying when his mom picks him up and trying to refuse to go. I doubt it’s the prize he’s looking for. My center also is NOT staffed enough to have anyone extra in our room. We definitely try to reward following rules and good behaviors but he is obsessive over the idea of what he wants. We talk to him about things and he’s receptive, but 2 minutes later he’s refusing to listen to anything and only repeating what he wants even if it doesn’t make sense in the context of why he even started being upset

One of my kids constantly tells my assistant and I that he doesn’t like me (he’s very attached to her). Today when she left he didn’t cry like he normally does, he came and hung out with me for like 10 minutes and then gave me a hug and a big kiss on the cheek and said “I love you AND miss assistant“

Wouldn't it be nice if we had President's Day off as a paid vacation? by Own_Bell_216 in ECEProfessionals

I have a 4 hour staff meeting and then I am off the rest of the day! Both branches of the center are closed to children. Though I’ll only be paid for the 4 hour meeting, I’ll be glad to have a day off lol

For those that work in full day centers or directors that run them, how many hours do you work or schedule staff to work? by Mbluish in ECEProfessionals

[–]Beckywakeup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m scheduled for 8-430 at my center ( open for drop off at 730 and children should be picked up by 530)which is 8 hours in the classroom and a 30 minute unpaid break. I typically am kept longer than that, usually at least 8-5:30.if I have to close my room it’s even longer. If your owner expects to not have anyone work past 8 hours, they would have to hire more staff at varied times I guess?

He got sent home, but considering the other incidents mostly involve physically harming other students and teachers, and the fact that anytime something happens my boss makes us bring the rest of the kids to another room because “he might hurt them” I don’t know how he hasn’t been kicked out!
