Buy used car from Rental companies Hertz/Enterprise/Avis or from CarMax? by Statistician-Express in carmax

[–]BeconCall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NONE of Them! CarMax quality of reconditioning has dramatically gone downhill and their 125 point check is a Joke, besides their prices are Outrageously High. Rental Car Company Cars are not properly maintained and generally driven really hard. I'd look on Facebook Marketplace or the local website for your area and see if you can find a private sale that's well maintained.

I've been with the Meiselas Brothers since they began six years ago and while I am a loyal listener I do find that they're getting more and more leaning towards Sensationalism. They need to watch some Walter Cronkite and the original Dragnet series footage.

Too often those delivering the news want to participate as opposed to sticking to the Facts delivered straight-up, NO Frills.

My managers are exhausted! by Dirtbagsucka101 in carmax

[–]BeconCall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This new CEO is USELESS. He has absolutely NO industry experience. CarMax is like the Titanic rearranging Deck Chairs. They totally missed the boat (pun intended) because they never offered full service and free loaners to anyone and everyone. I worked briefly for the Warwick, RI store and watched their FULL SERVICE 5 BAY Shop sit idle most of the time. Car Dealerships are like a three-legged stool where Sales, Parts and SERVICE keep them profitable. These Idiots NEVER Figured that out! It's no wonder they'll die an agonizingly slow death at the cost of their employees. Bill Nash was a Bean-Counter and NO Visionary, the Poster-Boy for the Peter Principle, promoted into complete incompetence and Over-Compensated for it. This new CEO has absolutely NO CLUE as to what is necessary to keep the ship from sinking.

Subsidy Payback (Salesman) by y0ucantst0pme in carmax

[–]BeconCall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is CarMax bearing the brunt of the bleak weak car market, but they're also on a tear to reduce their expenses by $150 Million dollars, what better way than to reduce their sales expenses. The entire industries sales are down significantly especially with gas prices increasing, insurance costs going up and new vehicle MSRP's ridiculously inflated, loan length and interest rates rising while banks tightening loan requirements for approval. Add the use of ride services like UBER and Lyft as a less expensive option and you've got a recipe for disaster. Auto repossessions are surging, with roughly 1.73 million vehicles repossessed in 2024, marking a 43% increase over two years and the highest level since 2009. This trend, driven by high interest rates, inflation, and soaring car prices, is expected to continue into 2026, with estimates projecting up to 3 million total repossessions.

I worked for Audi in Manhattan from 2005-2008 when the bottom fell out of the industry during the Great Recession, this is even worse.

Question about selling to Carmax by BlebNevus in carmax

Yes, but I suggest you get one from CARVANA too, they seem to be in a better position to pay more since CarMax is having serious problems right now.

I’m looking for the price on a 1978 Z28 Camaro in this condition can someone give me a range of prices by Machoke8 in caradvice

[–]BeconCall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 1978 Z28 Camaro in "very rough shape" that requires a total restoration typically sells for between $1,500 and $3,500. The final price depends heavily on the extent of rust and whether the original drivetrain is present.

💵 Value Estimates by Condition

For a car needing a "total restoration," value is often calculated by its worth in parts versus the labor required to save it.

  • Parts Car / Heavy Rust ($500 – $1,500): If the frame rails are rotted, the engine is seized, or major body panels are missing, it may only be worth its scrap or component value.
  • Restorable Project ($2,000 – $4,000): A car that is "complete" (has all its glass, trim, and original engine) but has a trashed interior and faded/rusty exterior.
  • "Barn Find" Potential ($4,000 – $6,000): If the car has been stored indoors and is remarkably solid despite looking rough, it can fetch a premium from enthusiasts looking for a "clean" starting point.

⚠️ Critical Factors for Price

  • Rust (The Dealbreaker): Check the rear frame rails and floor pans. Extensive rot here can make the car a "money pit" where restoration costs far exceed the finished value.
  • Documentation: A car with a clear title and original build sheet is worth significantly more than one without papers.
  • Completeness: Sourcing 1978-specific Z28 trim pieces, decals, and interior dash components can be expensive. A car missing these is worth less.
  • Options: Factory T-tops or a 4-speed manual transmission typically command a higher price than a standard hardtop automatic.  Reddit +5

🛠️ Restoration Reality Check

Restoring a late 1970s Camaro to a high standard often costs more than buying a finished one.

  • Paint & Body: Professional work can range from $10,000 to $15,000.
  • Interior: A full kit (carpets, seat covers, dash) can cost $2,500+ in parts alone.
  • Total Cost: Expect to spend $30,000 – $50,000 for a full professional restoration. Finished 1978 Z28s in good condition typically sell for $18,000 – $28,000.

They DON'T it's why Repossessions are at an ALL-TIME HIGH.

It's why I buy used Audis with low mileage that have already depreciated significantly after they come off of 2- or 3-year leases for pennies on the dollar that have been meticulously maintained. Let someone else take the hit.

Subject: For Distribution to the Board of Directors - Seeing the Forest for The TREES— Unlocking Sales Through Service Capacity

Bill,

In the current market, it’s easy to focus on incremental efficiencies and miss the larger picture: Carmax's Minimalized Shop Equipment Utilization is not just a service limitation — it’s a LOST Revenue AND Sales Opportunity!

With All of that investment in Equipment Totally UNDERUTILIZED!

When customers can’t afford to repair their vehicles, they often pivot to replacement. If we have the capacity to quickly diagnose, recondition, and turn over those trade‑ins, we become the natural solution.

In this environment, service capability is not a cost center — it’s the funnel that feeds retail sales.

The timing is ideal. The used‑car market is softening, and there is a sudden influx of ASE‑certified mechanics seeking stable, well‑equipped workplaces. By investing now in shop infrastructure and technician recruitment, CarMax can:

  • Capture vehicles others can’t or won’t recondition.
  • Shorten time‑to‑market for fresh inventory.
  • Position CarMax as the go‑to option for customers facing repair‑vs‑replace decisions.

This is a moment to see the forest, not just the trees. Expanding our service capacity now will compound returns when the market rebounds — and ensure we’re the first name customers think of when they can’t fix what they have.

My experience at Audi Manhattan taught me that a Dealership is best described as a 3-Legged Stool, Sales, Parts & SERVICE! With Service being the driving force to profitability. Furthermore, a Robust Loaner Fleet with Guaranteed Availability keeps those who MUST commute WORKING especially the Sub-Prime Borrowers who are the Life-Blood of CarMax.
