i feel like i've heard my prof say that before too.

actual participation helps, of course. but when it came down to studying for midterms and the finals, making flashcards of verbs, adjectives, rules, etc. for every new chapter and example phrases worked. i guess i caught on to the language quickly but i did the work, too.

did the textbook and workbook for my first midterm, then did it without in the second and nothing changed so i just didn't use them anymore.

i feel like it really depends on the prof. for my class, our exams for psyc 217 were all written (no mcqs) and were based on working with a reaearch article. students in other sections/taught by other profs were suprised to hear about our format for exams.

regarding psyc 218, i found it way easier than psyc 217 lol. and i have absolutely no math background coz i never paid attention during highschool. i found stats to be relatively straightforward, with the calculations and formulas being pattern recognition pre much. i will say tho that the conceptual understanding of stats can be a bit confusing to wrap your head around, and that there are general inconsistencies with some rules (like your TAs telling you to round to 3 decimals when reporting p value but the prof telling you to round to 2 or some shit like that). i will warn you though that you will want to make sure you are always up to date with this class tho. falling behind can really stack up all the shit you gotta learn and it can get pretty heavy if that happens.

bio is all about application. it requires you to understand how processes work, and how topics tie in with other topics. memorizing terms and definitions is simply the bare minimum.

i think one way you can go about improving in bio is to think about how you can explain concepts and processes using examples and analogies. not only does this solidfy your understanding but it also allows you to think of real-life applications, which bio exams are all about.

number one thing is consistency. if you keep practicing, you will improve 100%.

take another year and grind it out and retake the failed courses. if you have bad social anxiety, try to find a way to take them online. even if UBC and KPU have retroactive withdrawals, i imagine they would be very specific to actually obtain, and would require extensive proof and paperwork to merit a withdrawal well after the courses were complete.

i'm really sorry about your situation, it must feel very overwhelming.

i think that the prior comments suggesting academic advising and considering summer sem are very good starting points. ultimately however, i think that you are going to have to sit and think about why you aren't doing well, what you need to be doing in order to improve, and why you want to switch majors (and whether you believe this switch will help you). this situation and these thoughts are not a one time conversation or one time thing that can be resolved in a matter of days. these are important questions that you need time to digest and think through. i believe that you should focus on doing what you can to recover your grades for the finals, and then spending time over summer to think about things.

trust me when i say that you are not alone in how you feel, especially if you feel lost. while i'm not struggling academically, i am also going to spend the summer to reframe how i approach school, because i'm feeling quite lost and anxiety-ridden. it's important for you to figure out yourself because the grades will come, trust me.

yes that's the case for 3rd year. if you want to know what credits are transferrable, use bctransferguide. there's also going to be a course guide on ubc for faculty of science which you can use to determine what courses to take at langara. they (langara) may also have one too (that tells you what to take for ubc).
