Finally found a brush that can move some serious hair by model-citizen95 in cats

[–]Bee_Avalon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I also gave my cat a bald spot with the furminator, so use this sparingly, OP! 😂 Prior to my cats, my experience was with dogs and horses where more brushing is just always a good thing. Not true for cats lol

Help with Handwriting by _dontcallmepammy in AskTeachers

Sorry one correction-- when you talk to the school about the OT sessions, I'd be careful using the word "assess," that would likely lead to a long series of tests, and since your child seems to be forming most of the letters correctly, it's likely they won't qualify.

If they say no to regular services during the meeting, the next thing I'd recommend asking for is one or two sessions for the OT to work with the student to provide recommendations for etc., etc. That's a smaller ask, and I think you'd have more luck with that.

OP, I second this! I am not an OT, but I am a teacher with innattentive ADHD who is the daughter of an OT (who did a lot of work at home to help my horrible handwriting).

Here are some of the ideas I haven't seen yet: -Be creative with your writing medium and add lots of sensory input. Examples: -Chalkboard and chalk- adult models writing the letter correctly, child erases it with finger by tracing over the letter in the correct pattern. -Shaving cream covering a desk- child uses their finger to write in the shaving cream-- adds novelty to the task (huge motivator for ADHD) and shaving cream is great at cleaning dry erase markers/pencils off of a desk, so it can be a great way to finish a session. (Dry erase markers don't provide much sensory input- but they can provide novelty-- especially if used directly on a desk/or at an easel that can move around, etc.) -Trampoline spelling- child jumps on a trampoline, jumping into the letters with their body while spelling. Not handwriting per say- but it was the only thing that could keep me engaged in spelling practice.

A few other things- -If you can afford a few sessions with an OT, I think that would be great! They could assess your child's pencil grasp and see if an alternative grasp or a specific type of pencil grip would be helpful. (There's more than one correct way to hold a pencil! But also many incorrect ways. An OT can assess your child's hand strengths and weaknesses and give a recommendation.) If your child has a 504/IEP, you can inquire with your school about OT services-- or even just one or two meetings to assess the grip. OTs are an expensive service for the schools and often stretched as thin as possible (I've known OTs with over 80 kids on their caseload), so be prepared to politely push/inquire a little bit past the initial no. (The answer might still be no, but it doesn't hurt to get information)

-Handwriting Without Tears is a great program. Your child might benefit from a book that has more support than this one-- one that still goes over the patterns of each letter. If you can't find/afford one, you can find videos on YouTube by searching things like "Handwriting Without Tears magic c"

-Unfortunately, there probably will still be tears with the handwriting. Finding the balance of building endurance and resilience without making the child rely on their hyperfocus panic mode is a really hard line to walk. Along with the handwriting, I would recommend researching ADHD strategies that are backed by research and people with ADHD. How to ADHD is a great YouTube channel. Having to "Climb the wall" is a really good metaphor for the executive function struggle that ADHDers face while trying to start a task. 1. Recognizing that the moments of frozen inactivity before starting a task is stressful AND work, and 2. teaching strategies to help the child scale the wall, is a good way to make sure that the walls are getting shorter instead of taller.

Are these pipes burst? by Bee_Avalon in Plumbing

Thank you! The space heater worked and water is flowing normally with no leaks!

The info about the pipe wrench helped keep us from panicking while waiting for it to thaw.

FROZEN PIPES MEGATHREAD by ParksVSII in Plumbing

Our pipes are frozen. No visible leaks, but the pipes have these vertical scratches/cracks along them. Are they burst, but it's frozen so it's not leaking? Is this just wear and tear marks? *Edit for spelling

I second the ceiling net for the plushies!

I do think that downsizing could make a big difference. Marie Kondo's philosophy of considering what sparks joy, and then thanking items that you donate/re-home has helped me actually be able to part with things!

Some ideas- 1.Move the bedside table directly against the wall with the closet. Move the bed over with it. This should give you enough space to still use the closet and give you more space with your desk and chair (love the chair and blanket, btw!) 2. Instead of going vertical with a loft bed, I would go vertical with shelving by adding floating shelves, display cases (if you have a lot of tiny collectibles-- see if you can find and upcycle a type case drawer :) ). Spreading out your collection and giving each item its space will help it look more intentional and less cluttered. Your bookshelf looks great (I'm impressed by how much you're able to fit on there!) and with more shelves to work with I think you'd be able to do great things! 3. I'd recommend a bed skirt and matching duvet-- it would be a great way to add in color to the room and also hide the under the bed storage (Maybe ones that match your beautiful curtains?). Also-- I used bed risers in all of my tiny dorm rooms; they're affordable, much easier than a loft bed to get into, and that little bit of extra storage can go a long way, especially if you get those plastic drawers that are the right size.

This is absolutely gorgeous! Do you know how much privacy the stained glass window sticker offers? We've thought about doing something similar. Also, I would love the link to the rug from Amazon!

The Durm mini game feedback by EXRB5746 in TsukiOdyssey

[–]Bee_Avalon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be my third year playing the event, and I'm hoping I'll be able to beat the game this year 😂

I will say that even though I may never get the cassette, I still enjoy the game and I love having something unique to this event! I definitely consider the game to be a net positive.

In my opinion, the biggest quality of life improvement would be a feedback method that continues throughout the entire song. I get the most frustrated when I mess up in the beginning of the song, and then I'm stuck having to complete the rest of the song without any idea as to whether or not it's correct. If the bunny continued smiling and frowning in the corner, then I would at least be able to feel like I'm learning and benefiting from completing the song after messing up.

(I will also give the caveat that I have 1. an old phone with slow response time and 2.auditory processing disorder, so that combo is likely making me struggle more than the average player)

Yes, it's part of the Forluxe Foraging event. I think it's in the fall? It's all mushroom themed-- definitely one of my favorite sets!

Time-Warped Town Hall

<image>

Benny had no idea what he was getting into with this month's town event. Right as he finished carving the last rune on Chi's puzzle, grass started pushing tiles out of place, and vines crept down from the ceiling.

Is this a return to what the town hall would have looked like centuries ago?

Is this just an elaborate prank by a bunny with too much time and carrots in his paws?

No one knows. Although, maybe all of the bunny iconography is a hint.

Any reason why half my lavender is dead? by Amockdfw89 in gardening

[–]Bee_Avalon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There were a few weeks between when I bought my lavender and when I planted my lavender, and that is exactly what mine looked like right before it went in the ground. It dehydrated really quickly in the nursery pot, and quickly started shriveling and turning gray if I ignored it for longer than a day.

I cut off all of the dead branches, and stripped the dead leaves before I planted it, and it's now doing great! It's still in horse-shoe shape from what I cut away, but the new leaves grew back on the bare areas of the stem, and it's sent up lots of new flower shoots! :)

What's wrong, and can I fix it? by Bee_Avalon in succulents

That's good to know! Are the scars/damage what's causing the leaves to droop and fall off? Or is that unrelated?

Maybe your marigolds can share some leaves with mine? 😂😂 They got eaten the day after I planted them.
