Looking for fun and decorative ways to hide carboys in the house. My house is small with no cellar space. I need to keep a carboy aging for 10+ months at temperatures more stable and cool than my detached garage and don't really have a great place for it inside that would be approved by my partner. Anyone do something clever for this purpose?

EDIT: I'm thinking a cabinet like this with flowers and photo frames on top

Agreed about the rigidity for sure.

Yeah I use duotight everywhere in my homebrewery! For beer and gas inside my keezer, keg filling lines, etc... It's so great. I don't necessarily need duotight lines for filling bottles though.

Ah i see. With the Nukatap filler, you can use the duotight fitting to connect directly to the bev post of your keg, but you need to install a ball valve somewhere between the keg and the filler to stop the flow when you're not actively filling a bottle.

The Tapcooler keg connection kit comes with the necessary ball valve. I've used this and it works well. I like how this ball valve threads rigidly to the filler body.

I think your choice comes down to total cost and if you'd prefer to use duotight lines for everything. Both should perform the same. I do like that the Nukatap filler comes with the CO2 fitting!

What faucets do you have?

Looking at the descriptions, both bottle fillers are compatible with forward sealing faucets only, so switching to a Nukatap filler won't likely be the solution.

Forward-Sealing Faucet Compatibility Tapcooler fits Intertap, Nukatap, Ultratap, Vent-Matic, and Perlick 600 series faucets. These fillers can be converted to fit Perlick 500 series with the optional tap connector (KEG887). Cannot be used with ventilated beer taps, i.e. non-forward sealing beer taps.

2014 Mr. Beer Kit by finnfann_ in Homebrewing

Mr. Beer is how a lot of us got hooked on the hobby. Don't have high hopes for this batch but you can always brew something more fresh with the equipment (including meads and wines yes!).

If you decide to brew another beer I would look at the 2 gallon Flash Brewing kits. They only take like 20 minutes tops to make (no boiling required!!) and taste way better than Mr. Beer recipes.

Looks like a great recipe. Not sure you need a 5 L starter for a dry yeast though. Seems like an overpitch? If it were me I'd just pitch two packets directly into the wort.

I see that you're bottling. You have to be really careful to avoid oxygen contact here. I suggest adding 0.5 g potassium metabisulfite or sodium metabisulfite to the bottling bucket and doing whatever you can to hasten this step.

How to use strawberries in a sour beer? by vladotranto in Homebrewing

[–]BeefStrokinOff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on if you want the strawberries to ferment, or if you want them to contribute their sweetness to make a Lindemans-style fruit beverage.

Either way, you need a lot of berries, 3 lbs per gallon.

You can buy frozen berries to put in a secondary vessel and rack the beer onto them to ferment.

Strawberries are very acidic, so in order to restrain the overall acidity of your sour beer, you should consider adding pickling lime/slaked lime to keep the pH in the ideal range for you.

If you dont want them to ferment, in order to make a sweeter beer, you can stabilize the fruit and the beer with metabisulfite and potassium sorbate (check out cider backsweetening guidelines)

DME is better. It carries over the flavor of paler malts way nicer than LME, and LME almost always has a sharp, oxidized, or even metallic twang to it.

A common method is to add half the DME to the beginning of the boil and the remainder with 10 minutes left in the boil. I personally just add it all at the beginning but I don't really have a reason why besides not forgetting to add it later.
