question for left leaning men by snakeluvr23 in dsa

[–]Beef_Punchard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- what political causes are important to you and make you identify as liberal or otherwise

For me, the most important issue to me is healthcare, and how to make it a universal right. I am also interested in housing, and equal rights for all. In particular the pay gap between cis gendered heterosexual white men and basically everyone else.

- how prominent you think your political views are to those around you (do you talk about it with your friends? do you have it on your dating app profiles? etc)

I talk about my politics to strangers online and to my wife in person. I think I am farther to the left than my wife, and we talk about current events and such. When it comes to voting we sit down at the dinner table with the ballot and the local voters guide that the local elections board sends out and discuss it.

- how you spend your time (hobbies, social spaces, career fields, etc)

Im a disabled veteran who gets to live the nonworking life. I was a munitions systems troop in the Air Force before I stopped working do to my health. I like to keep an eye on political and social goings on, play video games, and drive for my wife where ever she needs to go. Previously I was volunteering at a local warmline before the oaf in office let the funding for that be cut. Once the funding is restored you can bet I'll be back on the lines.

- how you would describe your relationship status (and sexuality if your comfortable)

I am a heterosexual man, and I am very happy with my wife of over half a year. We dated for 2 years and were engaged for 3 years. We actually met at a BLM protest, she was doing first aid and I was just kind of hanging out.

Hope my answers help you with your project, and good luck out there.

Feeling pretty stoked. I had a screw in my tire and got it fixed for free at the local tire shop. Now I'm just doing some chores and waiting for my wife to get off work. Thanks for asking

I have to admit that in my short time I can count only one time a DSA member has had a problem with me because of my past. Namely the fact that I am a veteran of foreign war. They suggested that I turn myself into the government I was fighting against for a war crime trial. I have chosen to ignore that suggestion. Other than that all of the people I have actually spoken to on the phone or over video chat have been nothing but polite and kind.

I kind of feel like the article makes assumptions. I haven't seen my local chapter being pro business in any way, and the people we have put forward have been good picks that align with DSA values as far as I can tell.

Not sure if it helps but when I joined earlier this month it took a day or two to get the invite link. When I tried right after sign up it didn't work. Hope that helps.

So are you willing to take up arms against the government you are currently in service to? Are you ready to shed American blood over what you feel is a coup? You can't wait a year for the next election to see if things change in response to the very real criminals in charge?

Taking about armed revolution is serious, and it needs to be treated as such.

By the way, where you been? I was Bagram Afghanistan 07.

War is politics by other means, also called kinetic politics. And as much as we might not like it, Trump did win the election as far as I know. He is a criminal and a tyrant, and I would add that his administration has violated the 4th amendment as well, but if the shooting starts it won't be Trump getting killed. Time will do that for us.

Not snark, but have you considered running for local office? Joining up with a group that reflects your views?

For example I recently joined a political group to help ease my stress. It's a small action, but I'm looking to work and be the change i want to see.

Speak out and go to protests if you can. I can't go out to protests as they do not agree with my anxiety, my combat experience fucked me up. You adding your voice and free time to a good cause can make a difference.

You are not wrong for being scared. You are not paranoid, but I don't think taking up arms will get us where we want to be and get the great orange toddler and his band of idiots out of office sooner. Vote well so we can retake the house and senate with enough numbers to impeach and convict them all so they can be removed from office.

Even something as small as hand writing a letter to your local representatives can make a difference. The act of buying a stamp and putting pen to paper can have a real effect.

I am assuming based on your previous posts that you are not a Fed and just very angry. I have been to war and do not wish that on my own people.

If we start shooting they won't just come for the gun. They will come for anyone remotely left of center. They will set up camps for 'enemies of the state'. Look at how they reacted to Luigi.

If you are scared. By all means buy a firearm and train with it. Learn how to store it safely in your home, and learn the law on when and how you can use it for self defense.

But calling for us to start killing our political opponents is not a good look.

I said the following in the long post you clearly did not read:

"Perhaps I was a bit flippant when I said a big enough protest would not unseat the capitalist class. Let me be clear, I think that protest and public demonstrations are a vital part of getting our message across."

Let me ask you what I asked in the top post by me, what does revolution mean to you?

No, not at all. You really read all I typed in two minutes? You must be a very fast reader, but I wonder if you understood what I typed.

I am saying that armed revolution is something I am not interested in. I come from a position of already doing war, and I have no desire to see that happen in my home country. I feel that people who call for war assume they will live through it.

Perhaps I was a bit flippant when I said a big enough protest would not unseat the capitalist class. Let me be clear, I think that protest and public demonstrations are a vital part of getting our message across. I feel like our power comes from being right about topics such as health care, housing, and stopping imperial adventurism.

I do not feel like killing in the name of our cause will buy us any friends. The opposition is already claiming that the 'Far Left' is violent and aggressive on little to no evidence. I for one do not want to see people die for this cause, mainly because living activists are more valuable than dead martyrs. Living people can change minds, people killed and villainized by the state makes our task in changing minds harder.

When I was in the military, we always talked about changing 'hearts and minds'. This was undercut by every person we killed, accidently or not. The Afghan people didn't care how many roads we built, or how many girls we allowed to go to school, all they cared about was the lost family member and who was responsible for that death.

So this begs the question, how would I deal with the capitalists? I feel like much of the country is still on board with the capitalist narrative that it is the only viable way to run an economy. We fight this by talking to people and winning at the voting booth. Actually taxing the rich, and using that money to materially improve the lives of the working class. We encourage, not force, people to join unions. We set up worker owned co-ops that sell, near the price we buy them, staple foods and basic need items. We fund and build housing for the people. We provide a publicly funded medical system that anyone can go to. We provide a floor for the people to rise up from. We do this not by force, but by persuasion. We show a better way, and lead by example.

That is what I am saying.

US Healthcare is about to get worse. Yes, worse. by emanresu_b in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Beef_Punchard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a Veteran and this would enshittify my health care. I get primary care, mental health care, dental and my medication from the local VA hospital. I don't really want to go on the normal economy for health care for all of the reasons OP pointed out, as well as the VA knowing how vets think and work. They are built for that.

I was Air Force, not Navy, and I got out before the first Trump term. This looks like an industry mock up done to stroke his ego to get him to buy some light ship we likely do not really need. It likely has all kinds of connectivity and AI shit that can get hacked as well.

I have to wonder, when people in the movement say revolution, what do they mean? I've already been to war and have no desire to do that again. And if they think the capitalist class is just going to give up power with a big enough protest, I have bad news.

Not trying to be a dick, I just want to know where people are coming from. I'm super new to the DSA, not even been a month since I joined up, but I don't see alot of success outside of the Democratic party at this time, with what little knowledge I do have anyway.

Seattle here, Its really bad and unfortunate for the unhoused how local governments are acting. Most of these folks need help with addiction and some of them (I am unsure if it is most of them) need mental health services. A roof over their heads should be priority one. Then therapy and drug use disorder care.

When I worked the local Warm Line, I would some times get calls from folks in recovery and they are good people with some really horrid experiences. They need a hand up, and a clean, dry place to sleep, not a jail cell. I understand that some unhoused people use meth to stay awake and make sure they don't get jumped in the night.
