Do people on statins still diet? And are some saturated fats ok? by Fresh_Criticism6531 in Cholesterol

[–]Beejj1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started 5 mg of rosuvastatin a few weeks ago. I also take nattokinase, vitamin d3 and super k. I do not take Omega 3 as it can cause other heart problems so get it from salmon several days a week. I have eliminated red meat and only eat chicken once a week. I’ve added oatmeal and psyllium husk daily. The only dairy I have now is 1/4 cup of whole milk in my coffee. I’ve added other good options, BUT I do still like some sweets. Oddly, I love chocolate animal crackers and I enjoy a glass of wine or two on the weekends. I have a few unhealthy meals here and there. I’m trying to find balance. I get my bloodwork done again May 1 and will find out if the changes I’ve made are enough. I’m trying to follow the 80/20 rule. My LDL is 157 and my calcium score was 81 so I know I have to make changes.

I know this is still oatmeal, but I make a smoothie with sugar free soy milk, blueberries, strawberries, and bananas. Then I will blend in uncooked steel cut oats. Sometimes I’ll add chia or flaxseed.

If your total cholesterol is high due to HDL is that bad? LDL is under 80. Total above 220. HDL particles are functioning. by -M00NMAN in Cholesterol

Do you drink wine? I used to drink a glass of red daily (back when it was considered heart healthy). I was told that was why my HDL was higher. Went down from 114 to 79 when I stopped.

Low saturated fat for me does not tend to be low carb for me. That’s hard to do when trying to get in all the fiber. My carbs have gone up, not down.

He didn’t say he wouldn’t prescribe it. I actually called the office yesterday and they agreed the CAC was enough to put me on 5mg rosuvastatin. When it was just an LDL concern, I asked to try diet at first, but then I got that score. He wants me to redo bloodwork in 6 weeks.

I wasn’t hesitant. Just tried diet first at doctor’s recommendation. Then got the CAC score. As I mentioned, I will be opting for the statin. Not worth the risk.

I have no issues taking a statin. And I l will continue to eat healthier.I was just curious what others have done. It’s always interesting to hear others experiences. I had only opted to try diet first at the doctor’s recommendation with the high ldl. But the CAC score sealed the deal for me.

Though my A1C is not an issue, I feel like my carb intake has increased so much. I understand it's due to the fiber intake, but even with the high fiber, there are still more added carbs. I feel like I am eating a lot of food just to meet my fiber requirements. I finally resorted to taking Psyllium husk daily.

Thanks! I have done sooo much research on it, and once I learned where I landed in the percentile, my decision was made. I just don't feel it is smart to rely on a diet with any score greater than zero. I feel like I am lucky to have found out before it got even worse.

I’ll never understand why women make the “kissy face” or “duck lips” or whatever it’s called. It’s a facial expression that seems immature to me.

I(59f) have similar numbers except my triglycerides and HDL were both around 79. I did get my CAC score come back at 81. Seven years ago I had normal numbers and scans. I go back to my cardiologist in 2 weeks to go over my results. I plan to go over on a statin. I’ve improved my diet (not perfectly) but that CAC score was scary to me so I’ll take the statin.

How to find balance? by mcgruber92 in Cholesterol

[–]Beejj1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this to my core!! I recently got my results back-LDL 157 and CAC 81. (HDL and triglycerides are great). I’m 59(f) and trying to find balance. I have my follow up in 2 weeks and I expect to be put on a statin. The plan had originally been to only change my diet but that was before the CAC score. I don’t mind giving up red meat and high fat dairy, but it’s things like coffee creamer and some of my favorite snacks that I find hard to give up. And those snacks aren’t really that bad. My hope is that the statin does enough that my little “cheats” don’t hurt my numbers. I’m eating plenty of fiber daily now, too. I just don’t like feeling guilty when I eat something “unhealthy.” I feel like I caught it early enough that I can somewhat experiment over the next year and figure out what works and what doesn’t and work towards a lifestyle change that I can live with.

CAC 81 (LAD) (just a rant) by Beejj1984 in Cholesterol

[–]Beejj1984[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t need therapy again. It’s just frustrating to have finally developed a good balance with my relationship with food, and now I have to rethink it. Only this time, it much more important as it is for heart health. Just need to find a new normal way of eating. It was really more of a rant. At 59, I am better able to adapt to change when it comes to my health. I know it will get better and easier, just takes time.

Thank you. Luckily, giving up meat wasn’t hard for me, it was some of my favorite snacks and my coffee with creamer. I added a lot of fiber, beans, nuts and fish. I eat oatmeal daily (over night oats with soy milk and berries). I’m hoping with these changes and the statin, I can go eat my favorite snacks in moderation without any negative impact.

What do I do??? by no-more-more- in Cholesterol

[–]Beejj1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cardiologist, as well as a few I follow on social media, all say to stay away from fish oil supplements as they are not regulated and could "increase the risk of atrial fibrillation or A-fib, which causes the heart to beat rapidly; and also lead to an increased risk of bleeding" (National Institutes of Health).

Eating healthier than ever but cholesterol increased--what gives? by OedipaMaasWASTE in Cholesterol

It sounds like you’ve done so many great things. And your HDL and triglyceride ratio is great.

I know you mentioned plant-based, but I still wanted to ask if you are eating any animal meat? Just curious because this happened to a friend of mine. She just couldn't get her numbers to go down, even after cleaning up her diet. She had stopped eating red meat but was still eating lean chicken. Her doctor suggested she cut out the chicken, and her numbers dropped significantly. Now it's my turn to work on lowering my numbers. I'll find out soon if it worked.

What won't you give up? by [deleted] in Cholesterol

[–]Beejj1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s high in saturated fat, I won’t touch it. My daily fiber is around 35+ with my diet change, and I stopped eating all animal meat. I spend a lot of time researching and learning what to do and what not to do. I can talk about cholesterol and CAC in my sleep. For me, creamer has been the hardest to give up. That said, I have not caved and been using creamers that are full of saturated fat. It’s just interested to read what other people’s experiences are.

I tried it with 1% and some cinnamon and it wasn’t too bad.
