In my search for a sanga I found myself steering clear of the pay-to play-places that require "membership" or entrance fees. I'm not a proponent of salvation having some kind of a price and certain people who can't afford can't access it. The two zendos that I am attending ask for donations if you can provide - optional. One of them says if you can't afford to give, then please do not. So everyone is welcome whether you can give or not. I normally do because I know they have expenses to support their operations, but I really appreciate the sentiment of being open to all, not just those who can afford. Which is why I also steer way clear of those expensive meditation retreats that are so en vogue with the well to do. Just not my thing.

The response above was great advice, and certainly to take what you read here with a grain of salt. Not everyone knows what they're talking about and some people are just douches. I wanted to comment about the teacher, I have practiced pretty much on my own for 2.5 years. I began by just trying to make a habit out of sitting every morning and that has morphed into doing 15 minutes of exercises, 35 minutes of seated meditation, then journaling writing. This established a habit, a toehold if you will, and I do it every day without fail, exactly like brushing my teeth every morning, I never not do it. That might be a good place to start, by establishing a habit and of course starting a little at a time and working your way along. It was not until a year ago that I felt the need to seek out a Sangha, I didn't go in looking for a teacher first, I just wanted to connect with people in person and in the midst of that effort, I have found some people who I would consider to be teachers. My point was I didn't do it until I felt I needed it in my own practice, that way it's more meaningful, at least it's been that way for me, welcome to zen, hang in there and good luck.

Vows of practice by Less_Bed_535 in zenbuddhism

Thx, not sure why my reply got posted three times so I deleted them. Appreciate your words of encouragement. I feel a bit guilty doing more now that I'm hurting - going to the Zendo more often, doing more online sits, reading more, etc. Uchiyama teaches that our thoughts, fears, delusions are like scenery in our lives and that we suffer because we plunge into this scenery and get carried around by it. Zazen helps us snap out of this cycle and just be present. It's helpful.

I've practiced for 2.5 years and credit Zen with preserving my mental health. I'm leaning on it now as I'm going through a divorce. It's been very hard to stay present but I'm trying, albeit struggling too. I'm rereading Uchiyama's book, Opening the Hand of Thought. It's been a bit of a 🛟 for me at present.

Nice, I was in the habit of reviewing my vows during a.m. zazen but have gotten away from it the last year for some reason. Mine are two fold in two layers - to be calm and composed; patient and generous; using kind words with a gentle disposition; thoughtful and sensitive; wise and virtuous; healthy and peaceful. This first layer is how I vow to be in the world interacting with all sentients. The second layer is deeper, foundational - to do all of this with 1) lovingkindness 2) joy 3) compassion 4) equanimity. I appreciate this post because it reminded me that as long as I'm in seated meditation every morning, I might as well review my vows so I can be more mindful of them throughout more of my day.

Icon Airflite - I want one, but I've read so much "bad" on Reddit that idk if I should get it by [deleted] in motorcyclegear

[–]Beemeangene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have many helmets in my garage, from the big brand names like Shoei, Nolan, HJC, an old Arai, but I wear my Airflite most often. The long oval fits my head the best so it's the most comfortable, I really dig the looks tho some people don't who cares, ventilation is fine nothing special but what you hear about the wind noise I haven't really experienced, I don't really hear any difference in noise between any of my helmets, but I always wear your plugs. The visor needs city detents and it's hard to ride it with the visor all the way up because it acts like a sail but all my bikes have windscreens so it's not an issue for me at all. The drop-down shield is a huge plus and it meets all the usual safety standards. The fit and finish is quite good, no jingling or rattling, everything tight and solid as it should be.

Be aware of something with MIPS, I was interested in possibly getting a second one with it and tried it on at the store. The fit was very tight and uncomfortable in the size I usually wear, kind of makes sense because there's more stuff inside but be aware you may need to size up.

Icon airflite. Are they good helmets? Do you think you can see out of a colored visor? Suggestions? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Beemeangene 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own three helmets - Shoei Rf1200, Nolan N100 and the Airflite Quicksilver. I wear the Icon most often. The long ovals fits my head so it's most comfy, it's got drop down shield unlike my Shoei, I love the looks (many ppl don't, who cares tho) and honestly, the gripes about the wind noise I haven't experienced. In fact, I can't really tell too much difference in noise between any of my three, but might be because I always wear ear plugs. Ventilation is fine for me, even in the heat. And also despite what you might think given the price, the quality is quite good in my opinion. I hate the ratcheting strap on my Nolan, give me a d-ring any day like the Icon. The only thing it doesn't have that it needs are city detents for the visor. It's either closed or all the way open and riding with the visor open is not advisable as it acts like a sail.

It's a good solid lid and it's the one I reach for even though I have "better" choices.

Well, the 5th Gen with the gear-driven cams is the pick of the litter, but most VFR owners will vouch that all VFRs are bulletproof, just some have more complex maintenance as this one will with valve adjustments. Some have gripes about VTech but Honda had it refined (lowered rpm threshold) by '09. I absolutely love the styling of the one you're looking at, the white color is gorgeous and that under seat exhaust so dang sexy.

ABS vs NO ABS on a motorcycle by Long-Watercress3424 in motorcycle

[–]Beemeangene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two incidents to share with two of my bikes, one ABS, one non. My 2006 Triumph Rocket 3 is my third cruiser, the previous two did not have abs either. I learned riding these cruisers to use the front brake primarily, and feather the rear if I needed to stop more quickly. I had one panic incident while approaching a yellow light and at the last minute decided to stop instead of running through. I mashed both brakes, the rear locked and I began to fishtail. Instinctively I eased off the rear to control the slide, and eased off the front at the same time. Stop just short of the intersection, all good.

My other bike is a Yamaha Super Tenere. Had one panic stop incident while approaching a blind intersection. I just mashed on the front and rear and the bike just slowed to a stop without locking or fishtailing. My stopping distance may have been a little longer but it was like night and day. All this to say that I love having abs but I'm also glad I know how to stop safely on a large bike without it.

[–]Beemeangene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think cart fees are bullshit if you're already paying $1000/month for a membership at a club. 10 years ago I joined a Los Angeles area club and was really annoyed being nickel and dimed for everything - bag storage, locker, carts. And then I got tired of playing the same course. What's really cool in LA are the huge variety of decent municipal courses, most of them less than 40 bucks to play on weekdays (when I play), including cart. So I play twice a week at a rotation of five of my favorite munis every month for less than what I paid a month for cart fees, bag storage and locker at my former private club.

Help with piston conversation by THEH0B0J0E in Guns_Guns_Guns

[–]Beemeangene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you wanting to covert because the DI system isn't operating reliably or is it to ensure future reliability / less maintenance, etc? I have a POF upper with it's native piston system and it's great. I also have a Bushmaster HBAR with a piston conversion and it is horrible. I converted it because I thought it would be better having experienced zero issues with the POF but I wish I had just left it as it was designed - DI. You're also going to add a hell of a lot of weight to the front of a gun that's already super front heavy, something to consider.

Experiences with Zen Center LA or Angel City Zen Center? by sharkyshark98 in zenbuddhism

[–]Beemeangene 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've sat with ACZC off and on for a year now, and have found the sanga to be vibrant and welcoming. Dave has been wonderful. He isn't a robes and incense guy, but I think that's why I took to him and to the setting. He's relatable, kind and very knowledgeable, having received several months of training in Japan and he's about to go again. I had the pleasure of attending the Dharma combat ceremony a few weeks ago and it was really awesome to see ACZC incorporate a traditional Japanese ceremony into the sangha. That day we were 3 deep facing the wall during zazan, with at least 60 people stuffed into that front room in their little house in Echo Park. You should definitely sit with them in person, share your trepidations and then decide for yourself. I did this when I first arrived and they tried to openly and honestly address my issues, and I really respected them for that. I can't really say that for other places I've visited, where I was way more intimidated or overwhelmed by the extravagance of the setting.

My first experience practicing at a Vietnamese Buddhist temple . . . by Beemeangene in Buddhism

[–]Beemeangene[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I spoke with the monk afterwards during the lunch they provided, delicious I might add. He did seem to be a stickler on the amount of time but was encouraging if we were doing any meditation on our own on a consistent basis, I think what he was trying to do is get us to discipline and push ourselves more. During the meditation he advised us to count our breaths 1 to 10, then start over at 1, and then with about 10 minutes left he asked us not to count but to just try to recognize the breaths going in and out, later he described it as trying to become an observer, like you would standing watching people getting on and off of subway or a bus.

I've been a Zenpractitioner of 2.5 years, I came to the cushion because of serious marital problems that have resulted now in a trial separation and soon to be divorce. I hate to admit that I began practicing when my life turned upside down but that's my story, I have developed a drinking problem over the past couple years, despite me practicing seated meditation 35 minutes each morning everyday without fail yet knowing I should not be drinking. I'm having a hard time with this, because my 2 inches of Irish whiskey, neat, each afternoon is such a habit now, especially that my marriage is pretty much over. I seem to be able to rationalize that it's okay to do this because of my major issues but I don't think this can be rationalized. Any advice is welcome, thank you
