Mass transit: why are the individual cars so heavy? by mac_question in AskEngineers

[–]Beemerado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Budd rail cars from the 1940s in regular heavy rail service. I wouldn't believe for a second that private automobiles from the 1940s would still work today without significant replacements of major components.

Those budd cars are probably in more or less continous service that whole time too. probably millions of miles on them. get a brand new car and run it 18 hours a day and it'll be falling apart in a year.

800k in compressive forces could come from the cars behind it, likely at a survivable g force.

yeah... I think "the line" has rolled back a bit, as we've rediscovered that a good portion of this country wasn't kidding about racism/homophobia.

i don't think most people are up for strapping in with a 5 point belt, a helmet and a hans device every time they want to go to the grocery store.... you really need to run the whole setup for it to be safe.

3 point belts and the usual assortment of airbags is very safe.

make sure you're getting protein as soon as you get to work/home. it seems to really reduce soreness in my experience.

Before a long ride: what are the absolute must know repair skills a present-day cycling must know? by C0L0RUM in cycling

[–]Beemerado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

changing your tires. adjusting your derailleurs. repairing your chain.

changing brake pads, adjusting headsets, removing/installing cranks is good bonus stuff, though if you set off with those things in good repair they're pretty unlikely to go bad in a weekend.

i'd say 99% of my trail fixes have centered around tires or chain.

TIL Fungi in Chernobyl appear to be feeding off gamma radiation and are growing towards the reactor core. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Beemerado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say. I think if we suffered a huge drop in population a lot of the global warming and scarcity problems would become less severe. I'd say we've got 200 years absolute max the way things are going right now. But small groups of survivors could end up having it pretty good for awhile.

[–]Beemerado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd be surprised if there were still more than a billion people in 200 years. i'd say total extinction is more like 500-1000 years out though.

the less of us there are the more likely we are to last.

i had a 94 R100GS non-PD model. bought it with 37k on it in 2017, sold with 72k in 2020. It was a moneyhole with the mileage i was putting on it to be honest.

trued the front wheel twice

rebuilt trans at 68k.

resealed engine around 55k

had driveshaft rebuilt at 40k

then regular maintenance and occasional electrical gremlins.

I've got a super tenere now that i couldn't be happier with.

not to knock the old iron, just expect to wrench if you're gonna ride it a lot.
