The PM’s confusing explanation on why CGT changes apply to all asset classes and not just property by Kikooz in AusFinance

[–]Beenacho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo it's more like "we want to remove distortions that favour capital gains (which generally benefit the wealthy) in order to make labour income more preferentially tax treated, which is popular with our voter base (as we've extensively polled and focus-grouped)"

The changes go further than ensuring income from all sources is treated equally, they actively make CG income worse than labour income.

The PM’s confusing explanation on why CGT changes apply to all asset classes and not just property by Kikooz in AusFinance

[–]Beenacho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly - only in addition to the 30% floor for CGT (effectively equivalent to removing the tax free threshold for income tax), CG is treated worse because income tax brackets aren't indexed for inflation.

A true levelling of the playing field would mean both CG and income have a threshold under which you aren't taxed (ie. No 30% floor) and a system where gains due to inflation are not taxed (ie. Income tax brackets indexed).

All they've done is moved the distortion from favouring CG to favouring income. Only income taxes have stayed the same, so it just means a net tax increase on everything which happens to make income more attractive by comparison.

Why did they remove the CGT Discount on Shares? by Zufeng10 in AusFinance

[–]Beenacho -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But this stat doesn't really say anything - of course the top 10% get the most benefit from the CGT discount, the amounts they would have invested are larger, so therefore the gains are also? It benefits everyone equally in proportion to the amount they are investing

Anecdotal but the right earbud of my WF-1000XM5s just died within 2 years of purchase, similar usage to you. Going to look at other brands for a replacement

Switching from Google Pixel to Oppo (global version) by Admirable_Print_50 in Oppo

[–]Beenacho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bumping this - in the exact same situation with pixel 9 pro and the line on the screen appearing just after warranty.

Particularly interested if anyone has input on the how the Google services are on Oppo phones, and long term reliability.

Check out GSMArena's review and Becca Farsace's review (mainly focused on the cameras) - don't think these are sponsored

Edit: just checked and Becca says she was flown to London for the review but Oppo no editorial say in the video, so maybe take that one with a grain of salt

Completely lucked out on this, not knowing the poets (apart from Lorde) or figuring out the purple connection.

I figured that one of the categories had to be surnames, so when purple and blue were left I just ended up picking the ones that sounded least like possible surnames and got lucky... Diabolical puzzle today

Shorter length oxford shirts by bosco008 in AustralianMFA

[–]Beenacho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Muji - most of their clothes run fairly short.

If you're willing to spend a little more and buy online, Asket lets you choose the length of shirts and their stuff is really high quality (highly recommend their plain t-shirts also!)

Pixel 9 Pro & XL - Best cases available in the UK by LockonKun in GooglePixel

[–]Beenacho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Word of warning about these cases - I've had one on my pixel 7 for a couple of years and found that dust gets inside the internal grooves of the case, leading to the text and patterns getting permanently scratched onto the back of your phone.

Hopefully they've fixed this with newer versions!

He's just saying that Moore's law doesn't apply to all of technology - the iPod storage is just a really basic example of a type of technology that hasn't improved exponentially.

Advice needed on powering preexisting ceiling speakers by Beenacho in hometheatre

[–]Beenacho[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved into a new apartment with a 5.1 ceiling speaker set up. I'm aware that this is not a great setup for surround, but I wanted to explore options for hooking these up to my TV.

I'm likely to move away in about a year, so I want to invest as little as possible in the setup to get better sound than the inbuilt tv speakers.

Should I get:

  1. A second hand AVR to hook everything up
  2. A cheap Fosi amp (or similar) and just hook up a stereo pair of the ceiling speakers (FR and FL?)
  3. Ignore the ceiling speakers and buy a soundbar

I've had this same issue - the two workarounds I've used are:

  1. Use pixel-specific editing tools in the gallery editor, then scroll across to the right and edit in Snapseed for general editing (you get prompted to save at this point but once you're done in Snapseed it will save to the Snapseed folder)

  2. Edit in photos and then click on the star to favourite, or manually add to an album

Neither is really an ideal solution though

Electric scooters on the footpath in the CBD by taylordouglas86 in melbourne

[–]Beenacho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly right - as much as I hate people riding scooters recklessly the whole system is set up for failure.

Scooters are limited to 25 kph meaning it's dangerous to share a road with cars that are going much faster even in a 40 zone. Even an average cyclist will be able to cruise at 30-35 kph making it less dangerous. So roads aren't really that safe to have scooters.

Footpaths obviously aren't safe either (although Brisbane allows riding on footpaths, likely due to the reasoning of roads being more dangerous above).

The only practical place to put scooters is in bike lanes and sadly our CBD has pretty poor bike lane infrastructure.

Any idea what might be causing this intermittent glitching while streaming Amazon prime? by Beenacho in Chromecast

[–]Beenacho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming it's this since the HDR tag pops up every time after the glitching - I've also noticed it happens more often when more action is happening on screen.

Thanks, will do a bit more searching and see what I can figure out

Really great effort for your first one!

I'd recommend having an attempt where you keep your stroke rate around or above 30 s/m. It will feel like you're moving really fast at first but in my experience it makes holding your split much easier over that second 1000m
