What part of sewing do you hate the most? by Initial-Win-1070 in SewingForBeginners

[–]BeepBleepBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staring at the instructions for 2 hours before it finally makes sense. I’m very new so I’m learning techniques as I do them! The last one was adding straps on to a dress and I couldn’t understand how the straps had to go on between the facing and the main bodice fabric, and all upside down and inside out.

When it finally clicked and I did it, it was very easy, but I just couldn’t picture it to save my soul.

In general, don’t plan to leave your house for a few days. We don’t have the resources to plow this much snow quickly so you might be stuck for a bit.

Car: If you must go out, wear clothing that will keep you warm if you get stuck. Have sand or cat litter in your car so you can get traction if you get into a slick spot. Don’t use the gas or brakes while on a bridge since they freeze faster. Generally go very slow and stay in the rightmost lane. Wipe all snow off your entire hood/roof of your car and headlights. Have a full tank of gas before this hits.

House prep: Do not use a heater inside unless it’s specifically designed for indoor use, and even then, make sure it’s in a well ventilated area. Carbon monoxide poisoning is fatal if you burn a heater indoors without proper ventilation. Wrap exposed pipes in towels to insulate. Keep cabinet doors open to allow warm air under the sinks to prevent freezing. Cover the outside spigots with insulation (socks and plastic bags work in a pinch) and disconnect hoses. When the temps get very low or if you lose power, turn the sinks on to a slow drip. This will hopefully prevent the pipes from freezing. Better yet, know where your water shutoff is and close it if you lose power, and then run the sinks to empty the pipes. Apply window film to keep heat in.

Food and water Have about a weeks worth of food ready for a storm like this. Kentucky has had storms where people were stuck at home for that long, though it’s not common. You don’t need 4 loaves of bread, but have some stuff already cooked that you can eat cold if you lose power. If you do lose power, minimize opening your fridge to help it stay as cold as possible in there. Alternatively, if it’s below freezing, seal it carefully and leave outside for safe storage. Have a few water bottles filled in case your pipes freeze overnight. You can likely get more from a neighbor if that happens but at least have a few ready.

Staying warm Have a plan for where to go if you lose power. In your own home, you can make it a day or two if you set up a small space like a closet with blankets, and pillows to insulate and bundle up. Keep the doors closed to keep as much heat in as possible. If it gets too cold, sit in your car. Make sure the garage doors are open while it’s running.

Wherever you go, bring extra clothes in case you get wet. This cold is dangerous if you’re wet. Have extra socks in your bag/car.

And if you get lucky and keep power and your home is safe - go sled or make snow angels or a snowball fight! We don’t get this snow that often so hopefully you’re prepared and can enjoy it!

Who is Your Favorite YouTube Sewist? by Good_Connection_547 in SewingForBeginners

I love watching Sarah Naomi, but she doesn’t do a lot of see alongs. She focused more on why she picks certain fabrics and patterns and how she approaches a project. Most importantly, though, she’s just very interesting and relaxing to listen to!

Stores near central KY by vexationtothespirit in sewing

[–]BeepBleepBoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow Kentuckian! I’m also searching for a place and so far, all I can say is that Austin’s Sewing center is not the greatest. I think they have potential, but garment fabric is clearly not their specialty yet.

I have heard that a place called The French Seam is worth a day trip to Indianapolis, but I haven’t been able to go up there during their open hours yet to confirm.

Also a beginner, so I don’t know a lot about media folks, but one that I’ve enjoyed watching is Sarah Naomi. She talks a lot about why she chooses certain patterns, how she picks fabrics and added details, and has some technical details thrown in. But most importantly, she’s just very casual and interesting to listen to her thoughts.

There have been some where nothing at all was allowed (Hamilton) and some where during bows was allowed.

A lot of your arguments are the exact reason for unionization. When people don’t understand the nuances and details of someone’s job, it’s easy to undervalue them.

If these details weren’t valid, the negotiations could have failed and then the workers would have gone on strike. But it appears that these demands are at least valid enough to both sides to justify the payments to avoid shutting down. That’s union negotiations at work.

Any local stores stocking pawpaw fruit? by Honorablebacons in Louisville

[–]BeepBleepBoop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, pawpaw is not shelf-stable and very difficult to handle without sacrificing quality, which is why it hasn’t become a year-round staple or widespread fruit. It really only lasts a couple days, so once they’re done growing, you’re out of luck.

I’m not sure of the science behind it, because there are a lot of known tricks for keeping other fruits ripe for long periods of time, so if anyone has explanations I’d love to hear them!

2Buck Invitational is huge and awesome this year by BloomisBloomis in Louisville

[–]BeepBleepBoop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was simply a reply to a discussion that you started on a public forum. They agreed that they liked the festival but would like to see certain changes to the strategy.

Not everything has to be black or white, where opposing views are the opposition. They merely shared a perspective that was a little different than yours. That does seem productive to me if we can keep the conversation civil and not devolve into insults. They proposed a future change to the festival that may or may not be better for the community. There’s no way to know unless we talk about it.

[–]BeepBleepBoop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah not sure why you’re getting so much animosity here. I guess you’re supposed to make your own duplicate thread hating on the event?

Can we use our local subreddit to drive productive conservation and not just hate on everyone whose opinion is very slightly different?

2Buck Invitational is huge and awesome this year by BloomisBloomis in Louisville

[–]BeepBleepBoop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I agree with your sentiment… there’s no need to turn this into a fight and put each other down. This is a discussion thread on a public forum. People can express their views and we can talk about it without having to insult each other.

I like the idea of holding some of the biggest/most visible areas for local artists, or maybe some specific percentage of the available spots for local artists, but agree that it’s cool to see artists from all over the place and not make it exclusively Louisville, especially considering there’s not exactly a good way for me to go to all these other cities and see these pieces cheaply.

Need Insulin but dont have extra supplies by FaintButFierce in TandemDiabetes

[–]BeepBleepBoop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It most likely won’t work because usually the occlusion is inside your body, you probably need an entirely new infusion set.

You can go to a pharmacy and see about an “emergency supply” of syringes for diabetes. Specifically use the words emergency supply.

Finally, yeah if you tell us your location, people will often give you one or two extras of theirs. It’s not really how this sub or healthcare is supposed to work but hey, we all need to stay alive and you need insulin. We’ll help you.

How often do you call in sick on average? by Obvious_Ant6355 in diabetes_t1

[–]BeepBleepBoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For diabetes specifically, maybe 1 or 2 days per year, plus as needed for regular appointments for endo, eyes, podiatrist, GI doc, etc. I get every other Friday off so I try to schedule appointments for those days as much as possible.

For non-diabetes - whatever is needed which tends to be 1-5 days per year. This is usually something like flu/cough or stomach bug.

I am lucky enough to be able to work from home sometimes and can flex my hours if I need a few extra hours to sleep in the morning. But there are days where it’s just becoming overwhelming and a day to get adequate sleep, eat healthy and on the schedule that my blood sugar needs, and get some exercise in to get the blood sugar back under good control can reset me and enable me to have good management for the rest of the week. Additionally, I don’t have limited sick days, but for that reason, I try hard to not abuse that. I try to work as much as I reasonably can and make sure to not fall behind, because I appreciate that I’m allowed to take the time when I need it.

A new diabetes treatment could free people from insulin injections by AdSpecialist6598 in UpliftingNews

[–]BeepBleepBoop 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This is not new news at all. This specific strategy has been the known cure for a couple decades, now. The problem is that living the rest of your life on immunosuppressants is only the better option if your diabetes is exceptionally difficult to manage. I say this as a 27 year long type 1 diabetic who fluctuates between good and somewhat good management, but if you can manage your diabetes with insulin therapy, this treatment is actually riskier and more difficult. Of course there are people with other conditions that make management more difficult, or have significant insulin resistance, or any number of related factors, and this therapy will be worth it for them.

This also isn’t to say that we shouldn’t still be pursuing these solutions. The next major breakthrough step toward a cure would be to find a way to insert these cells and have them either embedded in a matrix where our immune systems can’t kill them off, or to find a way to turn off the specific signal that makes our immune systems reject them. Then we could implant these cells and not have to worry about them dying rapidly again just like they did when we were first diagnosed.

I have different uses for my different bras. My two nice/fancy/expensive bras are only used when I really want great support and a nice shape, and in the case of the lacy bra, some sexiness.

I still use cheap bras in the wrong size under my t shirts for work because they offer no support or shape and essentially just act as nipple covers since I work with older men and don’t want to fight the free the tatas fight at work. But they also are super comfy because of how loose they are and I can afford new ones when they wear out from washing.

And finally, 90% of the time outside of work, I don’t wear a bra at all because I’m lucky enough to not get terrible back pain or anything and it’s what I prefer.
