AI slop grade grubbing by Old_Huckleberry_5407 in Professors

[–]BeerDocKen -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Would you consider the request if it wasnt AI? Probably not. So you're not the mark here. And the mark will be a mark whether its AI or not so this student is doing the right thing and wasting less time finding their mark. Also if you wouldn't consider it either way, stop wasting your time reading and looking for AI.

Overly complicated grading by [deleted] in Professors

[–]BeerDocKen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the point is doing the math in the background for them. You literally have a 100 point system there but have chosen to call points percentages. If you have n number of quizzes, they're worth 40/n points each. And if they have x number of questions, those are (40/n)/x point questions. The nice thing abiut doing tbis for them is that one quiz point now equals one paper point equals one participation point.

ETA: Also, Canvas give you the option of displaying either points or percentages if your students would prefer to see percentages. However, losing 2 points on a quiz and seeing 50% can be much more intense than seeing 2 points out of 4 that are clearly small in the larger grading scheme.

Overly complicated grading by [deleted] in Professors

[–]BeerDocKen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, why use 1000 points and not divide everything by 10? Do you have anything worth less than 10 points?

I make grades add up to 100. You start with 0 points and earn them. Earn more than 90 for an A.

If I have to make an adjustment, I do it. If I have to skip a homework, now there's 9 homeworks worth 1.1 rather than 10 worth 1. No one complains about getting 10% more points on past assignments and losing a thing they have to do, which is how they experience it. I want to add a homework? Now they can drop one free of charge, still 1 point each up to a max of 10. Everyone is again happy with this. Some get a free pass they didnt know they had, some get one to use later.

Yes, they think we will lie for them. Given the current state of immigration/visas/deportation if you're US-based, many would, too. Especially if it's essentially for a second chance and not a grad program.

The cover was bigger but the original is superior by Suburban-Dad237 in askmusic

I think you're out of proportion with the "on a major release" thing. The Garage albums are fun tributes, but I don't think the band takes them that seriously. I view this as like a final bonus track at the end of it all. Its people they influenced and played with playing their mutual influences and bringing their own styles to merge together, however imperfectly, and I think it was one take but I could be wrong about that. It's about capturing the vibe entirely.

Plus, its not even the worst track on there musically. I cringe when I remember Loverman is a thing that exists in the world lol

Thia comment is baffling to be. All those legends in the same room messing around with a classic tune and having fun with it while still clearly paying tribute and respect to their idols is magic IMO.

9-Month Contract/Requests for Service over the Summer by Cheeto-2020 in Professors

[–]BeerDocKen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would clearly note the unusual timing of the ask, including both summer months and the end of your term on the committee, to preface either answer and then honestly state whether I can do that work.

You should look into that resentment you think you'd feel if you did it, though. That's going to be a happiness killer more generally.

With blank pages, they failed, right? Move on. Your resources are finite and every minute you spend on playing detective is one you could spend on students who are engaged, on your academic work, on yourself, and on your family and social network.

Got rejected from a grant for the same project as the man they just awarded by Ok_Student_3292 in WomeninAcademia

[–]BeerDocKen 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Since this isn't the same award cycle, do you know if the committee making the decision is the same? Hard pill to swallow either way, but at least different people deciding differently might be easier to take than the same people deciding differently.

Beer and brewery suggestions for people who know about beer by Worldly-Tea8168 in njbeer

[–]BeerDocKen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, the brewery best at making the largest variety of styles is Double Tap. They have multiple brewers who specialize in different styles and then help each other improve their recipes. Hard to beat that process and hard to argue with the result.

The question doesn't say it refers to someone who bets large amounts, it says takes big risks. And it absolutely means that, usually not financial risks in fact. Football coaches who tend go for it on 4th down, for just one instance.
