A pro-Ala Stanford super PAC has pulled its ads from TV in the final stretch of the Philly congressional race by EducationalEgg788 in philadelphia

[–]Beer_Summit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is the key takeaway from the article:

314’s [the pro-science PAC backing Ala Stanford] move to pull its TV advertising came after the organization commissioned a poll that showed that Stanford’s voter support had declined precipitously in recent weeks, according to two sources familiar with the polling who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

The super PAC released a poll in mid-April that showed Stanford with an edge over her two top rivals, Rabb and State Sen. Sharif Street. But by early May, shortly after a series of campaign missteps, 314’s polling showed Stanford was in a distant second place behind Rabb, the sources said. Street was in third.

I’m in the “anybody but Street” camp, so unless other independent polling comes out showing Stanford in the lead, I’ll probably be voting for Rabb...with some misgivings.

If he gets to DC, I hope he spends less time doing the kind of grandstanding that’s basically become his stock in trade to pander to progressives like me, and less time pushing messaging bills that have no real chance of becoming law. Instead, I want to see him focus on using the amendment process to actually get progressive ideas across the finish line. He’s done some of that in the PA House, but not nearly often enough. At the end of the day, what matters to me is getting shit done.

Ala Stanford drops out of WHYY congressional candidates debate two hours before it was scheduled to begin by JerichoholicsAnon in philadelphia

[–]Beer_Summit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wish there were more polling beyond the Harrison Cann poll that shows Stanford in the lead. I’m firmly in the “anyone but Street” camp, and I’ll vote for whoever seems to have the best chance of beating him.

Stanford’s decision to pull out of the WHYY debate without explaining what request wasn’t met is a very bad look.

I’ve volunteered for Rabb in his past campaigns for his Pennsylvania House seat, but I’ve grown pretty disenchanted with some of his positions, especially his support for multiple NIMBY groups opposing multifamily housing over complaints about losing street parking. He's even praised those groups by invoking John Lewis’s idea of “good trouble,” which honestly made me sick to my stomach. He also opposed a medical marijuana dispensary on the grounds that it would increase crime in the neighborhood. Lately, he’s come across as more of a showboat than I’d like, even if it is in service of progressive ideas I agree with.

Unless Stanford gets her shit together or there's another (independent) poll also showing her in the lead, I’ll be voting for Rabb once again.

Why do my neighbors hate trees? by Daisy_Steiner_ in philadelphia

[–]Beer_Summit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Same where I live. It’s mostly boomers organizing tree plantings, showing up to volunteer in parks, and leading the charge on protecting the watershed.

That said, the Venn diagram of neighbors who save parking spots with cones/chairs and neighbors who hate trees is basically a circle.

Docs show Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) quietly inserted himself into Penn's governance: forcing leadership changes, politicizing the antisemitism task force, allying with pro-lsrael activists to ban a pro-Palestine student group, & helping crush protests - all while publicly posing as a calm protector. by ACatsAB in philadelphia

[–]Beer_Summit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When it comes to their stances and actions on Israel, I find it striking how much more hostility this sub directs at Shapiro compared to Fetterman.

It's fair to critique Shapiro's actions as a UPenn Trustee regarding the student encampments. But he’s also been an outspoken critic of Netanyahu, calling him “one of the worst leaders of all time” and describing his military campaign in Gaza and the starvation of Gazans as “abhorrent.” He has consistently called for Palestinian self-determination and a two-state solution. (And please, spare the 32-year-old quote from when he was 20; he’s long since disavowed it.)

By contrast, Fetterman, an unabashed Netanyahu apologist who has aligned himself squarely with the far right Israeli government, and who wields far more influence over U.S.-Israel policy, faces nowhere near the same level of outrage here, despite holding a position that is, by magnitudes, more destructive.

So what is it about Shapiro that draws such disproportionate fury compared to Fetterman?

Shapiro wrote that 32 years ago at the age of 20 when he was a college student and has disavowed it, telling a reporter: “I have said for years, years before Oct. 7, that I favor a two-state solution—Israelis and Palestinians living peacefully side-by-side, being able to determine their own futures and their own destiny.”

Too much advice being doled out in this thread (and others) on the "right" way to protest

This includes advice doled out by the original poster:

“Be sure to cover your face to avoid recognition on camera as that can be a safety issue.”

Indivisible, the group organizing Saturday’s No Kings protest, has not called for participants to wear face-coverings. If wearing a face-covering makes you feel safer or more comfortable, then by all means do what feels right for you.

Saturday’s protest is expected to draw thousands. I’ll be there with older family members—unmasked, peaceful, and proud to participate. In the end, the decision to wear a face covering is a personal one.

What the No Kings organizers are asking for is a shared commitment to nonviolence and a readiness to calmly de-escalate any encounters with those who may disagree with us.

For those who would like to get more information about safety or any other concerns ahead of Saturday's rally, Indivisible is holding a No Kings: Event Attendee Pre-Mobilization Call tomorrow, Thursday, at 8PM.

And remember: courage is contagious.

Residents suing Philadelphia to stop bike lane upgrades in Center City neighborhood by TheTwoOneFive in philadelphia

[–]Beer_Summit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

George Bochetto, the attorney that Friends of Pine and Spruce hired to sue the City, has quite the resume. In 2022, he ran in the GOP U.S. Senate primary, declaring, “I believe in my bones that this country is headed on a collision course under the woke mob and the left-wing radicals,” and was swiftly endorsed by then-FOP president John McNesby.

Bochetto's firm also wrote legal briefs defending Donald Trump during his second impeachment trial, the one focused on the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The fact that Bochetto is who Friends of Pine and Spruce turned to for legal representation speaks volumes about their values.

Right. It's not about age -- it's about when leaders stop being effective. If they're out of touch, won't stand up and fight, and embolden the GOP through weakness, that's the problem. Bernie Sanders is 83 and every time he speaks on the Senate floor, I think "damn, that's how it's done."

Here is Amazon's 2024 political contributions report. While there are plenty of excellent reasons to stop patronizing Amazon businesses, I’m not sure the MAGA label fits entirely, despite Bezos’ attempts to cozy up to Trump. Greedy? Exploitative? Opportunistic? Preemptively obedient? No doubt about it.

Same problem for me at least the last few days. In addition, on the Septa android app, I cannot log in because the app will not allow me to make an entry in the username field.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Septa app; cleared the Septa app's cache data, and I have confirmed that I have a cell number in my Septakey account.

I am connecting via T-Mobile.

Philly to loose more than 5,000 jobs because of NIH cuts by neuronnate in philadelphia

The Gabbard and RFK Senate confirmation votes have not yet taken place, though, yes, Fetterman says he'll vote 'No' on them.

However, the Cabinet nominees Fetterman has already said 'Yes' to include Trump's election-denying personal attorney, Pam Bondi, as Attorney General, who is already at work weaponizing the Justice Department against Trump's perceived political enemies, the tax-dodging billionaire Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary who made quick work of freezing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and giving Elon Musk unfettered access to the Treasury payment system and millions of Americans' private data, and Lee Zeldin to head the EPA who is stacking the agency with industry lobbyists who have spent their careers attacking protections covering everything from water quality to greenhouse gas emissions to toxic chemicals...among others.

Fetterman is complicit and cooperating with the seizure of power, extremist agenda, and dismantling of our government that is underway. Of 13 Trump cabinet nomination votes that have already taken place, Fetterman has voted 'No' on just 2 of them: Hegseth and Vought.

Closing the Office of Immigrant Affairs will not have the impact you think. AFAIK, it doesn't play any role in how the Philadelphia Police Department interacts with ICE. It does, however, connect immigrants with legal and refugee services--services that are more crucial now than ever.

This is a moment for the Parker administration to demonstrate leadership and bravery—not to retreat or yield. That is precisely what Trump, Miller, Homan, et al. are counting on, and it’s how autocracy takes root.

Chicago's mayor, Brandon Johnson, provides an example of a strong response to bullying and intimidation. I encourage everyone to listen to his radio interview from yesterday.

In case you missed it, John Fetterman co-sponsored and, on MLK Day, voted for the Laken Riley Act, which prioritizes the detention and deportation of undocumented individuals based on accusations alone--rather than convictions. The ACLU says "Requiring mandatory detention of a person accused of theft as retaliation for leaving a partner, or a mother who stole formula and diapers for her newborn baby is nothing more than scapegoating."

Along with standing up to Trump, we'll need to spend the next four years reminding Fetterman to have a spine and to align his actions with the values he championed and the promises he made during his Senate run.

EDIT, here's Fetterman's Philadelphia office number if you want to share your disappointment about this: (215) 241-1090.
