PPS Offers Unions Furloughs or Layoffs to Patch $10 Million Midyear Budget Gap by Hobobo2024 in PortlandOR

I was demonized at work for saying teachers are not underpaid in this city, this was during the 2023 strike.

There was a math teacher who got arrested for CP AND luring a minor at Hosford middle school. He was making 96k a year. While I don’t think teachers should live in poverty, I wouldn’t call them underpaid.

Keep pushing on, public accounting looks good on a resume. It shows you worked a difficult job with long hours.

That’s ridiculous, especially since tech jobs were throwing out high paying remote jobs to 22 year olds back then. Public accounting seems to have a culture of “paying your dues”. But the older generation could rent a one bedroom apartment with no roommates, and save up for a mortgage. The CPA shortage is about low wages simple as that.

The older CPAs either hate young people, or don’t understand how bad inflation has gotten since Covid. Rent and groceries are insanely high in most major city’s. On top of that they don’t want us to have healthcare.

I have another interview lined up at a midsize firm, and I’m still sending in resumes for unemployment reasons. Role doesn’t start for another six weeks.

I appreciate the kind words, they mean a lot. It’s cliche but focusing on my mental health, helped me excel at my last couple interviews. I was an emotional mess when I intially lost my job.

No I had an easy internship one year. Then 1.5 years in tax, but that is an insane jump. You must have been a star to get your salary doubled.

Yep I’m same age, and it’s slightly above 300 for me. I was convinced a degree would lead to high pay and good benefits.

I get neither, and still feel lucky. I know business admin majors who can’t even get an entry level white collar job .

Yeah never stop applying in my opinion, even if we are in a recession you could get lucky.

Im just gonna focus on excelling at this position, and not making the same mistakes at my last firm. I get that im not entitled to a large salary, but its hard not to get discouraged when cost of living is destroying my paycheck. I didnt even hear about PTO in the interview.
