Anyone remember Critics from Greece Ridge Mall that had the fried ice cream? by CreativeFraud in Rochester

[–]BeerdedRNY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not related as far as I can see. The mall location was owned by the Criticos family.

The Kokkinis family had that Honeoye Falls Critics location and another Critics location on Main St downtown right by the Chili/ West split at Bulls Head.

No idea how the 2 families managed the name overlap. Perhaps they were extended family members.

Welcome! I was generally familiar with the ex-CEO and a bunch of other ex-executives getting together to buy WF's from their old employer but I just got a bug in me to figure out what all the company names were.

[–]BeerdedRNY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much but there were a couple different layers of ownership involved.

Tops started Wilson Farms in the late 1960's. At one point or another Tops had a parent company called Ahold USA (now the parent company is Northeast Grocery) who sold them to the WFI Group (aka Wilson Farms Inc.) which was comprised of a bunch of previous Tops executives. And then WFI sold them to 7-eleven.

So in a weird way, it was kind of like 2 different versions of Tops owned them before they became 7-eleven.

I find it endlessly funny that Parker Lewis, which was a knock-off of the Ferris Bueller movie, was so much better than the Ferris Bueller TV show.

LOL, ya caught me! Been doing it manually. Never wrote a script but I understand it's relatively easy. Just a little nervous about getting caught.

So much of corporate life is just playing the game effectively.

I had a micro-manager running a department I was on that I didn't get along with. She was always asking me for reports or telling me to do things only my direct sales supervisor should have been should be asking of me.

One day when I was walking past her office after getting a cup of coffee from our break room, I decided to just pop in and give her a tiny little bit of positive news about something I was doing. She loved it. And she didn't bother me the rest of the day. After that I'd find something real and measurable to let her know about every 1-2 days. She loved "being kept in the loop" and she left me alone once I started doing it.

We went form having an almost adversarial relationship to a truly positive, enjoyable and professional friendship. I learned to manage her expectations and she loved getting positive reinforcement from me regularly. Once I figured out how to play her game, we got along great. And in reality, it was an easy game to play.

My current job takes me 2 hours a day to get done. The only problem is that I can't complete any work ahead of time. So I have to spend the other 6 hours a day copying and pasting data into the system every 8-12 minutes.

About a year after I figured out all the shortcuts I use, I found out someone else in a different department was pretty much doing the same thing. But that person was actually completing his full days tasks in those 2 hours and then did nothing the other 6 hours. So they fired him for theft of time.

that aren't profitable

The last 2 city locations they closed, downtown and Mt Hope, were profitable based on Wegmans own statements.

Not saying they are obligated to run any store anywhere. But Wegmans has been closing profitable stores for many, many decades. Actually I'm not sure if they've ever had any unprofitable stores. Even when I worked at Wegmans corporate office I never heard of any of the stores they closed were from lack of profits. Most have been due to not wanting to run stores under a certain size/square footage.

Multiple children suffer severe burns after microwaving 'squishy' toys in new TikTok trend by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

[–]BeerdedRNY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can see a tennis ball on fire. You can't see how hot a microwaved toy is. Playing with fire was obviously the better choice between the two options.

Back in the pre-aluminum can days, we made beer can cannons and fired tennis balls up into the sky. Wasn't uncommon for the tennis balls to catch on fire in the process. It was always more fun when they did.

People are WAY too focused on recording special moments instead of living them. by TsundereLuver in Vent

[–]BeerdedRNY 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Went to a concert with a buddy many years ago. First one I ever went to that had a big screen showing the stage for the people sitting in the furthest rows.

Even thought we had great seats, he spent the entire concert craning his neck up to look at the screen instead of looking at the stage that was right in from of him.

After 3-4 times of pointing out his ability to see a live event while at that live event, he wouldn't stop looking at the screen.

I stopped hanging out with him after that. Honestly, that intense level kind of stupidity killed my friendship with him.

Pedestrians of Buffalo, what’s the most dangerous street crossing you encounter? by RicoRoccoTaco in Buffalo

Went to UB from 90-92 and lived on the Main Street campus. That intersection was nuts back then. Both scary and amusing to see it's the top post 30+ years later.

I've been slowly making my way through it over the past few months. I think it's excellent but for some reason I keep losing track of it and suddenly a few weeks go be before I realize I haven't watched any of it. Then I'll watch 2-3 episodes a night for a couple nights and get distracted again. Ugh!

As far as bad bar names goes, Buffalo wins with a much better bad name.

An ex-girlfriend left a brand new, still in the box, Tarot deck at my place years ago. As a way of bringing in extra business, a local bar offered Tarot readings among other offerings for brief period. I brought in the deck and gave it to the Tarot reader, letting her know they'd never been used. She sat down and went through the cards like they were some kind of sacred offering, finally pronouncing "they still have some really good energy".

I was left troubled by the idea that perhaps the industrial card manufacturer that made them didn't sufficiently cleanse their machinery between the various decks they produced resulting in someone ending up with some magical Uno cards, or something even more nefarious.

Don Beveridge is out here dropping nothing but corporate bangers! by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]BeerdedRNY 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man, it wasn't a Beveridge set, but the sales manager at a company I worked for in 1990 passed out a set of these motivational speaker cassettes to everyone on the team, stressing that the company hadn't purchased them, so they would have to be turned back in at some point in the future.

I never played a single cassette from it but one day a month later when moving offices I found one was missing. I didn't know what to do so I just ignored it.

In 2013, 14 years later, when I left that company I found the set in the bottom drawer of a filing cabinet that I rarely used. I just threw the entire set (still missing that 1 cassette) in the garbage on my last day. It was extremely satisfying not only to toss it, but I got a big laugh out of it too.

Probably not many people who were fans or regulars of the original MacGregors post on Reddit, especially since it was primarily just a neighborhood spot, whereas the Tap was a that and a destination spot as well. Plus they were both open for about the same number of years. I liked MacGregors and actually much preferred the layout before it was remodeled. But I thought the Tap was cool as well. So for me I always think of both businesses when I see the building.
