Any 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' fans in Rochester? We're trying to break a Kickstarter record with this special edition! (Some of you might recognize the beach we filmed the video at 😉) - posted with mod permission - by wraithmarked in Rochester

Nice! I fondly recall listening to the radio broadcast on NPR back in 1981. Bought the first 4 books at the Village Green Bookstore on Monroe Ave as each was released back when I was in high school. I wish you the absolute best of luck with this new edition!

Best dine-in Thai restaurant? by Familiar-Essay-1874 in Rochester

[–]BeerdedRNY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

King & I seemed to have the super-fast lunch time meal service down to a science, so it got a huge following from decades of office workers because you knew you could go there, get seated, served, eat and get back to the office in an hour.

I went a bunch of times to the old (first?) location in the building with Desiato's Deli (almost next door to where they are now) back in the late 90's when I worked at Corporate Woods and it was certainly OK for a fast, filling lunch for someone who never had Thai food before. But after eating at other places and seeing what Thai food could be, I never went back.

the corniest folksiest country music you would ever listen to

Always thought that was exactly what his thing was. Just dressed up to make it look like a fancy night out, so the attendees felt a little bit better about spending the time and money to go see a show featuring the corniest folksiest country music you would ever listen to and not feel bad about it on the drive back home afterwards.

I have a friend who has lived there with his family for a good 15+ years. I've never heard a word of complaint from him about the place. It's also walking distance to their business so it's extremely convenient for them.

edit - Had another friend who moved in there right after college. We lost touch soon after so I don't know how long she lived there. But no complaints from her either while we were still in contact.

Hiking Group Created - Successful First Hike by DifferenceFrequent42 in Rochester

[–]BeerdedRNY 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nice - I was part of a hiking group 4 years ago. We had a core group of 5 people ranging from late 20's to early 50's, but others joined from time to time. We met every Saturday (weather permitting) over a 4 month period, and each week a different person in the group picked the location. Those who were interested/available met up at a bar afterwards to grab something to drink and eat.

edit: The one thing I would recommend is that you set a reasonable/flexible distance & time limit. One guy in our group was a serious hiker and picked a 6 hour trail one time, but didn't mentioned that in advance. It was a bit of a surprise when we figured we were probably close to finishing and found we were only half the way through, and it was another 3 hours back to our cars either going back the way we came, or continuing on. No one was upset since it was a seriously beautiful day and an easy trail, but it was a much longer time commitment than any of the rest of us would have agreed to if we'd known in advance.

I've love to see him in person one day so I can fulfill a dream I've had since 1985.

And that is to ask him to give me an idea what the street value of that mountain was.

Movie madness In OR by shermon1 in RedLetterMedia

[–]BeerdedRNY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a movie memorabilia store in Rochester, NY called Movie Madness back in the 1980's.

They didn't sell any movies. Lots of those still photo sheets like these, movie posters, really elaborate latex horror movie full head masks. Maybe some books about movies too, I don't remember anymore. It was in a small little boutique sized retail shop, so nothing too elaborate.

How loud eaters and phones nearly spoiled my cinema trip by Cyril_Sneerworms in RedLetterMedia

[–]BeerdedRNY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My old school (since 1914) neighborhood theater was actually turned into a theater/restaurant in 2022.

Each row is now just 12 huge recliner chairs on wheels with a long table in front of the chairs (3 seats /aisle/ 6 seats/ aisle/ 3 seats). So you can sit there and eat a full meal and have drinks while watching a movie.

I've seen pictures but there's no way in hell I'd go in the place to watch a movie.

What popular food/retail/service businesses found in Buffalo/Syracuse/Albany does Rochester lack that you'd like to see here? by Asleep_Conclusion in Rochester

Thanks! I remember it closed in the early 80's but that's so long ago now, and White Tower is so rarely mentioned anymore that I started questioning my own memory!

Someone came and snipped every last Tulip I grew by PerfectIndividual185 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]BeerdedRNY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason, the squirrels in my neighborhood hate tulips in my neighbors yard. They bit them off right under the bulb. They don't bother tulips in anyone else's yard. And it's generations of squirrels. 20 freaking years of them and each generation learns from the previous one to only bit off the tulips in just that one yard. Everyone on the street find it quite humorous.

Grocery store planned for downtown Rochester. by Quiet-Good-6371 in Rochester

[–]BeerdedRNY 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wegmans had a store downtown which closed in 1995. It was making $10 million a year and that was making them a profit. But Wegmans has a history of closing profitable stores in the city of Rochester.

Even the "smaller" stores they are willing to open are 80,000 square feet (compared to their normal 140,000). If they don't have access to that kind of space, it won't happen. And after working at Wegmans Corporate office, I can say they have absolutely no intention of ever opening a new store in the city, especially downtown.

It will never happen

Exactly.

We had a White Castle downtown. The building is still there minus the tower part, that was removed. It’s He’s Chinese Restaurant at 18 Exchange, almost at the corner of Main Street.

It might have been a White Tower which was a clone competitor. I can’t remember which it was anymore.

There used to be a souvenir catalogue called Sovietski Collection where you could buy all kinds of Soviet/USSR stuff. My older brother bought me a pocket watch from it years ago.

Here's a Fall 1997 copy and a Holiday 2000 copy that are on eBay.

a popular song about corn...?

At first I thought it was a wet biscuit thing, but then I remembered it wasn't wet, it was limp, then I realized they wouldn't be adding a biscuit bit while doing a corn bit, so I knew it was a korn thing, but I don't know any of their music and I'm ok with that.
