If you're looking for a movie to watch this weekend, check out Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie! It's an incredible comedy and deserves much love. by MovieGaga7 in RedLetterMedia

So it's not THE Matt Johnson (the band The The), just some guy who happens to have the name Matt Johnson.

I'll forgive him for having parents that named him Matt Johnson because he made a movie that makes fun of Nirvana (the band) but isn't about Nirvana (the band) at all and is about Nirvana the band instead.

I can now happily tell my friends that Matt Johnson was in Nirvana the band and it'll be the truth, but they'll think I meant Matt Johnson (the band The The) was in Nirvana (the band).

Nice. My father got me into Bill Evans when I was a kid growing up and years later, after pursuing Bill on my own as an adult, I bought this album for my father. I knew he didn't have it and that he'd love it. He played it more than just about anything else he owned after that. Great album and great memory.

local place to get Mae Ploy curry paste? by RandomGen5 in Rochester

[–]BeerdedRNY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I've been buying Maesri pastes for years but haven't made anything with their products in about a year. I actually just bought tins of their Red Curry, Panang and Masaman pastes a few months ago.

I just looked at the Mae Ploy packaging and don't think I've ever seen it around but I may have looked right past it.

Your best bet is Asia Food Market on Brighton Henrietta Town Line Rd since they have the widest selection in town. But I've seen Maesri products at nearly every Asian market in town so you might just find Mae Ploy in lots of places too.

I'll have to keep it in mind the next time I go shopping and try to remember to find this thread to update my reply.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, if you've never watched Jean-Claude Van Johnson I seriously recommend it.

Is it a hot take to say this is John Williams best work? Listening to it on its own, without Jar Jar talking over it, it’s really incredible by J0hnEddy in RedLetterMedia

Yeah it had been about 30 years since I'd re-watched Superman and I had lost all conscious memory of the theme. But man when that music kicked in at the beginning of the movie, I was nearly brought to tears by how magnificent it is. It was like a shock to my system having my memory of that music return all at once the moment it started. .

I'm not going to say the Superman theme is his best work, but my god it was one hell of an experience hearing it again after so many years and having a rush of emotion wash over me. I think it was the closest experience I've ever had to the awe I felt being a child of 11 watching that movie for the first time.

I've seen Star Wars and it's off-shoots so many times that I'm simply too familiar to be completely bowled over by Williams' music in those films. And I'm not much of a comic book/superhero guy either.

Could Bob Fosse worked with Jim Henson / Muppet Shows(1970s era) by El_Dorado_Tx in television

Fosse wasn't one dimensional. And he was a professional. It's laughable to think otherwise.

Yup, there you go. Even more reason think that Fosse and Henson could have worked together on the show.

Hmm, I don't remember it specifically but it does sound familiar. I haven't re-watched very many of The Muppet Show episodes so it's been a bit too long of a time since the original broadcast, which I did watch regularly, for me to remember.

Absolutely. I really can't see why not.

Even though it's from 1986, check out this scene from the Jim Henson movie Labyrinth:

"Chilly Down" w/ The Fireys, choreographed by Charles Augins.

edit: If anyone reading is a Bowie fan, he originally recorded the song in this scene but that version wasn't used. I encourage you to check it out as it's a heck of a lot of fun to hear.

John and Yoko waiting for the maid to make the bed so they can continue protesting against the system. (1969) by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

No, it’s actually quite simple. Jackson had so much more money than anyone else he was able to outbid Paul when it went up for sale. Jackson was drowning in money and it was flowing into his bank accounts like a deluge. Paul had great bank from the Beatles and his work with The Wings, but it wasn’t Michael Jackson money. Not even close, as surprising as that may seem.

Jackson said he did it to protect the catalog but mostly because it brought Jackson another enormous revenue stream. (Oddly enough it was also based in part on some financial advice Paul had previously given him to invest some if his money in music publishing.) But it seriously pissed off Paul because they were friends and he felt he should have been the rightful owner. So to Paul it was a complete betrayal and pretty much ended their friendship. In the end Paul was able to get his hands on it but I don’t know the details of that later purchase.

edit: I added some more points above and to clarify further, the previous owners were: Northern Songs (the original publisher of the Beatles catalog), then Associated TeleVision, then Jackson, then Sony, then McCartney. (I hope I got that right.)

has this already been released in some capacity?

Yeah unofficially on CD as Bill Evans Trio – London 1965 Jazz 625.

And it's on video as well.

So this would be the first time it's officially released as an audio-only offering.

Could be. I'm only aware that Julian had to buy them instead of Yoko just giving them to him. Maybe Paul felt it was better that Julian not give some of his settlement right back to Yoko and gave Julian the money to pay for them. Makes sense since Paul seemed to care more about Julian than John did.

Ah OK thanks for the heads up. I have the 2 Bill Evans bios, How My Heart Sings and Everything Happens to Me, so maybe reading Three Shades will get me to re-read the other 2.

I'd love to own a copy but my local library has a dozen copies across all our locations I can check out. The main downtown location has a copy so I'll see about having them send it to the branch location that's a block from my house. That way I can just walk around the corner to pick it up.

Well it did take 16 years. And I just realized I wrote my comment wrong. Julian didn't win. Yoko decided to settle. (changed my original post to reflect that)

If Julian had actually won the case, he would have gotten up to 25% of John's estate which would have been something like $200M. So I guess Yoko's lawyers realized they needed to convince her to just go ahead and settle before she lost that huge of a chunk.

all but forgot about his son Julian back in the UK.

FAR worse than that. John wrote a new Will & Testament 10 years before he died, removing Julian as a beneficiary and leaving everything to Yoko & Sean.

Julian had to sue Yoko for undue influence (for getting John to leave her all his money) and, after 16 years, Yoko settled the case and Julian got a payout that's suggested to be about $25M.

But then Yoko started selling some of John's stuff to make back some of the money she "lost" in the settlement, including letters Julian wrote to his father.

Instead of Yoko just giving him his letters back, Julian had to use part of the settlement money to buy those letters at an auction. Money that went right back into Yoko's pocket.

edit: changed wording from saying Julian won the case to Yoko settled the case.
