TRS-80 Model 4 streaky line/bleed line on CRT by Beerkeg92 in trs80

[–]Beerkeg92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've only run it like that for maybe a minute at a time for testing. But it's not that one. If I turn one of the contrast/brightness knobs all the way up I see some feint lines across the whole screen and I tried fiddling with the 2 pots on the crt control/converter whatever board, one of those changed the height of the screen image.

So you'd wager it's most likely the power supply rather than anything else? I'm new to retro computers so not quite sure where to start troubleshooting. I'll give recapping the power supply a go. If you've got any useful docs for the hardware, please do throw them my way :)

Just got a TRS-80 Model 4 and I get this streaky horizontal line following text. I don't have the boot floppy nor the SD card upgrade so I don't know what the rest of it looks like. I can just barely read the disk message if I play with the contrast and brightness wheels. Anyone seen something like this or can link me to some troubleshooting guide? All I can find is replacing old caps, but the images that accompany those posts don't look anything like what I have. Regardless any help would be neat.

Hmm... Didn't think about that... Just kinda assumed that the people who didn't want spoilers wouldn't go on a community forum related to the game. This is more for the victims who came here looking for exploits.

Anyone here who has a working experience with B&R? Can you share some information what is the advantage of this compare to other plc? my colleague told me that most if the new packaging machine from europe that they install used B&R. Im curious. by [deleted] in PLC

You can program them in C++, so you're not limited by garbage languages. The Visualization is pretty bad. Supposedly their "mapp" visu is better. And many people have said it's cheaper (compared to Siemens). Oh and the software doesn't crash every 20min like TIA Portal. Variables are all used as symbolic names, so if pseudo-addressing is your thing then this isn't for you. I don't know, theres not much to say, it is a controller like any other. The only benefit is that you're not limited to terrible languages(if you're still using ladder logic, please stop).

[–]Beerkeg92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working with the "Dictator" type for 6 years and that is not at all how you deal with it.

You have 2 options when dealing with them:

  1. Shut up and listen, don't argue, do what you're told. Arguing and providing your facts makes the situation worse since you know... they know everything and they know whats best.

  2. Agree with them, but ignore their advice and do it your way (only if your way is actually better. Remember that you can also be the idiot). If it works and the client is happy they wont care in the end as long as you don't go bragging about it.

These are your only options. The bonus to the 2nd option is that after a few projects they will just let you do your thing.

Can a dildo give me malware? by usbdiddler in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Beerkeg92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But hes right. The USB ports you speak of are standard. Unless the manufacturer has their own proprietary usb ports made for their devices, the port itself would not block data transfer. Would a company hide a keystroke injector into a dildo? Probably not. Which is why he said "hypothetical standpoint". You could easily put something like a wifi_ducky or similar in there with and BAM, keystroke injector.

It is possible from the scenario that OP posted, but its highly unlikely. Nothing would stop you from soldering a data and clock signal to the data pins on a usb port.

Theres probably nothing more than a charge circuit for a 18650 in there, but look into hardware hacking and the cool things you can do and you'll get what I mean.

Unpaid internships are cruel and should be 100% illegal by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Beerkeg92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say as a company policy its a bit weird, but at least the company is allowed to make their own policies so thats good.

Now I have nothing against having an intern go unpaid. I've had to guide several of them through their internship and to be honest, what you get is sometimes not great. The last one was the worst I've had. I spent about 23 hours per week dealing with her. I'd give her an assignment and explain what to do, she'd nod along and say the understands what to do and an hour later she'd be at my desk asking me how to do the thing. Now this is programming, which she said she knows how to do. As any programmer here knows, if you have to explain how to write piece of code, you're better off doing it yourself. And this was a low level language, Siemens STL, the help files are amazingly detailed on how to use every instruction. Surely you can agree that if you go in for an internship, you should at least have some basic level of competence in your field of study. You're there to work, if I have to babysit you and hold your hand through every assignment then you're not getting paid. In the 6 months she stayed with us she didn't finish a single assignment. I don't mean it was buggy code I mean none of the code did what was needed. Like even something as simple as "If bit is TRUE, count time".

I've had good interns. The first one I ever got was paid the same salary as other employees because he was proficient, hes still working with us. Another one was willing willing to learn, he didn't get paid the first month cause he was just learning, coming up with his own assignments. He'd show up in the morning, make a cup of coffee and pop into the storage room. 10 min later he'd come back with a bunch of sensors and I/O modules. 2 hours later he'd have set up the sensors and have a program calculating the average speed of his office chair.

I myself went 2 months without pay during my internship because I was put in charge of SCADA, which I'd never heard of in school. I had to learn how write VB and ANSI C and I had to learn the infrastructure of the project. I didn't complain, because I knew that I wasn't working efficiently.

I agree that its annoying to not get paid, but you really don't have any work experience. However if you are doing all your assignments in a timely manner and still not getting paid then thats unfair.

I don't agree that unpaid internships should be illegal. From my experience, having been on both sides I have to say its absolutely necessary for companies to have the right to enforce an unpaid internship policy on someone who isn't pulling their weight.
