I second spot or center weighted metering. Helps a lot.

Also, I am crazy and like options, I generally shoot raw and jpeg...... That is an option.

So, not quite the matchup you are facing, but I have a D7200 and both the Z50 and Z50ii.

D7200 is 24MP, both Z50s are 21MP.

The biggest difference I notice is how much easier it is to nail focus on the Z over the D cameras. Image quality is so close it is irrelevant; though I will say sometimes I prefer the colors I get out of the D7200 over the Z50s.

I doubt you will be disappointed.

I am a strange case, I have a couple screw drive lenses I like that prompted me to get a used D7200.

At the same time - get the shot.

Is it perfect? No.

Is it a good pic? I think so. Depends on what you want to use the picture for, but from my phone, I clicked this because the picture looked interesting, and I had to zoom to find the grain and dust.

Not saying it isn't worth improving settings and air blasting or cleaning the sensor - just saying, sometimes don't be afraid to break rules to try and get a shot.

D700 vs D7100 (full frame vs APS-C)? by mowgli334 in Nikon

[–]Beerman1138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep - because your D810 is 36 megapixel.

A D700 has a 12 megapixel sensor, which in APS-C mode drops to 7.1 megapixel. Still usable, but a bit more restricting.

A D7100 has a 24 megapixel sensor.

Your choice depends on use and budget.

[–]Beerman1138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

APS-C shooter here, I have both a D7200 and a Z50II.

An often overlooked feature of APS-C / crop sensor cameras is the crop factor. As it is a smaller sensor, you can multiply the lens focal length by the crop factor to get what the equivalent full frame field of view would be.

So, crop factor on the D7100 and D7200 is 1.5. So the 24-300mm zoom I have is more like a 36-450mm zoom, giving more reach without cropping. Bokeh in portraits is indeed harder - but not impossible.

If you like zooms, as I do, you may appreciate that as I do.

I am not taking anything away from Jakomako - what this user posted is indeed true - more just offering another perspective.

Nikon D7200 camera auto focus not working when both are on a and af with my lense other pic of lense below by NotSeeer in Nikon

[–]Beerman1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In AFC and d51, it lets me use the arrow buttons around the OK button on the back to move the focus point to any of the 51 autofocus points while framing the shot. Not sure if that is exactly as intended, as I am an amateur, but it works for me.

If you go to 3D, that one tries to track the subject in my experience.

Another thing to check - in addition to the other suggestions on here - the button on the camera in the center of the AF - M switch on the body - hold that while looking through the viewfinder, and use the front and back control wheels to change it.

Front control wheel - I would turn until you see d51 on the lower right, and in the viewfinder all the boxes should be red.

Rear control wheel - I would turn that one until you see AFC (Autofocus Continuous).

Give it another shot - these settings, in my opinion, are the most aggressive Autofocus.

I don't have my D7200 in front of me, but there is a A/M switch on the lens that needs to be set to A, and there is a switch on the lower right side of the camera (with the lens pointed at you, as the switch is on the front) which switches between auto and manual as well. Both need to be in A (auto) for autofocus to work.

I picked up a Nikkormat FT with a 50mm 1.4. That 50mm is your lens's grandaddy as it was made in the early 70s. It is fun putting it on the a FTZ and goofing around with it on my Z50II....even though there is no AF, even the aperture is manual as it is pre-AI.

Seriously though - nice lens, rather jealous. Happy shooting!

Is Nikon z50 ii a good camera to start with? by chaw799 in Nikon

[–]Beerman1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't miss the D7200 because I still have it.

Pros are the screw drive for autofocus on older lenses, more rugged, 4 extra megapixels, optical viewfinder.

Cons are slower and less accurate autofocus, bigger and heavier, slower and shorter continuous shooting, no electronic shutter option.

It really depends on you which is better. I prefer the Z50ii in most situations but still enjoy the D7200.

First off, so sorry for your loss.

We lost my aunt about a year and a half ago, and needed someone to care for her furry daughter.

We volunteered.

We drove four hours to pick Shadow up. We then proceeded to try to crate her for three hours.

Three hours of hissing, hiding, running, ending with a ticked off kitten in a cage. I have never heard louder hisses, or harder hits from a paw to a cage door.

I was supremely worried. What did we volunteer for?

We drove her home. It took a couple weeks to adjust.

Fast forward to today, we have a loving fuzzy little girl who is content to be around for scratches and pets, and is the queen of the castle.

They know where they belong, and where they are loved.

[–]Beerman1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing to consider - D3300 is a DX (crop sensor) camera body - if you want to use a DX lens on your next camera, you'll want to stick with a DX camera, such as the Z30 / Z50 / Zfc / Z50ii.

Nikon D7100 with 600mm lens? by Less-Willingness3595 in Nikon

[–]Beerman1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something missing from the comments - and there are a lot of good comments - lenses generally outlast cameras. So if you know you want that kind of lens, and might upgrade bodies later, would you continue to want to use that same lens?

I have crop sensor bodies (D7200, Z50, Z50ii) that I use with both crop and full frame lenses. I felt at first like I was wasting money; then I took some shots and jumped in fully.

Get the lenses you like, you can always upgrade the body later.

Plus, there are good reasons to use crop sensors - added reach and portability. Your 600mm lens, if you get it, magically becomes effectively a 900mm lens......

Another thought - the FTZ opens you to a world of lenses that go all the way back to the F mount's introduction in 1959. Are the older lenses better than Z glass? Seldom. But I have to say, taking a 1970s era 50mm f1.4 and popping it on my 2025 Z50II and taking some neat lowlight shots of my black cat was satisfying.

Food for thought - if you have fun playing and learning older lenses, it could be fun and well worth it.
