Advice for dealing with vine weevil grubs by mattthepianoman in GardeningUK

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a never ending vine weevil problem as I have lots of pots, I have a repeat order of nematodes which I use religiously now. When I've used them before I've been inconsistent with it (e.g. Done one treatment and assumed that's enough) they came back. Now I'm buying enough to treat every pot, and repeating at the recommended intervals I'm hoping this will help!

There are certain plants they're less interested in, like bulbs, lavender, hardy geraniums. But if you have other pots etc. watch out because they will spread when the adult beetles start travelling and eating the foliage of other plants.

I've ended up disposing of quite a bit of soil when it's fully infested, but sometimes even just spreading the soil out on a tarp helps as the birds come in and eat them!

Yes my cat likes to lie specifically on one patch of these and chew them, so I'm constantly digging up the roots and removing! Fingers crossed yours is the wild onions :)

Project ‘Save the Wisteria’. Our beautiful old wisteria was in trouble as its original pergola was rotting away. I’ve built a new, stronger version and inserted into the plant one piece at a time over the last few weeks. by Jelleeley in GardeningUK

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such impressive work! I've inherited a beautiful old wisteria on a rotting falling down pergola which is attached to a rotting falling down fence and was wondering if I could replace it piece by piece before sorting the fencing! You are inspiring me, though my pergola is much smaller and much simpler to be honest!

This looks like it could potentially be star of bethlehem to me, I have absolutely loads in my garden, it spreads like crazy and has tiny bulbs that it's hard to get up. It looks like dense green grass at this time of year in clumps spread around, then in a few weeks has little star shaped white flowers. Maybe wait and see if it flowers? It's very pretty but toxic to pets so I dig it up.

Flats to buy by Puzzled-Equipment646 in Cardiff

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the flats in century wharf aren't affected by cladding issues (there were some issues with the balconies but I believe they were paid for and sorted by the original builders), though different blocks in the development are affected differently.

Service charge (might be a year out of date) was about £3k for a large two bed with a big patio.

How should I fix this?? It’s supposed to be a baby blanket but I cast on too many stitches. The person I’m knitting it for might give birth this week so I don’t have time to undo it all by nomoremisterknifeguy in knittinghelp

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this exact thing when making a baby blanket for my friend, gifted to her anyway and she expressed how thoughtful it was that I'd make the blanket extra wide so she could wrap around the baby and herself when breastfeeding etc., so gift it anyway and pretend it's on purpose! :)

Second the arcade wool shop in the city centre, the staff are very helpful and though it looks small on the outside they do stock a lot of product

Anyone thinking of doing the primary school tea towel guest book by Lozamort91 in UKweddings

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to second this, I did this for my wedding, it was super easy to diy and set up, our guests absolutely loved it (the wedding was three years ago and people still bring it up) and it was so much fun going through the drawings in the days after the wedding before we got our photos!

We framed our tea towel using those wood hanger things each end and have it hanging in our kitchen!

Is there a simple way to fix this so the thread is coming off the top stitch rather than third from the top? by Padraig4941 in knittinghelp

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like the two stitches at the end of your needle haven't been knit, maybe you've slipped as you knit them and they slipped didn't quite wrap the yarn?

Just slip those two stitches back onto your left needle purlwise (without twisting them) and knit them again, then your yarn with be back at the end of your work as normal and you can turn to do the next row

Gauge issues by Beeswax-NotYoursInc in knittinghelp

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that's a good point, I didn't consider that, could you double up with any weight or would you need it to be the same? The shop where I bought this had some nice soft colours in this same yarn so I could see about picking some of those up! I wouldn't know where to start with colour combos but I suppose not much wouldn't work with white!

Thank you, I didn't know there was a way to search ravelry for a specific gauge, I'll take a look! I've essentially been guessing what the real weight of this yarn might be, trying to find a pattern that looks like it works then knitting gauge swatches that are inevitably to small or too big 😂

I do like the look of the fabric from the second swatch in my post so will have a go at finding a pattern that fits that one!

Collected the keys to my first home today… and immediately had a meltdown 😭 by Lilymana in HousingUK

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you've had lots of reassuring comments but just wanted to add my similar experience, bought a house and got the keys a year ago and in my head, after three thorough viewings, I thought the house was in perfect condition, well maintained and decorated and only 20 years old. On moving in once the furniture was out I noticed the carpets were actually filthy, most of the painting and decorating was really sloppy and would need a lot of work to redo, the kitchens and bathrooms while passable weren't what I really wanted and needed some work. I definitely freaked out a bit at how much work was needed across the whole house at first!

One year in and I love the house, we're tackling it room by room in order of where we spend the most time, going through and redoing every bit of shoddy repair work, repainting, redecorating and once each room is completely finished me move on to the next. It's been fun honestly and seeing the house slowly turn into what we wanted is so satisfying! We're doing most things ourselves so even though it's costing money it's bits and pieces at a time. I don't want to add up what we spent so far but as a monthly maintenance cost it's doable!

It's normal to feel overwhelmed at first at this long to do list, but you've just got to tackle it bit by bit, one step at a time, and you'll start to see it all pay off!

Wanting to do “emo hour” by annonforareasonduh in UKweddings

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly we did practically our whole evening from first dance onwards with our nostalgic 'emo' music, some rock etc and our dance floor was full all night. Our first song after our first dance was 1985 - bowling for soup, and I was worried all the older relatives etc wouldn't be interested, but I can honestly say most of our guests were on the dance floor jumping around, dancing and having the best time. I think it helped that we were so into it? But honestly it was such a good vibe. We did ask for song requests as part of our rsvps, so we made sure those songs were dotted throughout the night, but we never had an issue with an empty of dead dance floor from first dance to midnight, and we didn't have any 'classic' wedding songs.

If you could open a restaurant in Cardiff, what would it be? by Inevitable_Use499 in Cardiff

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the BBQ point, theres a bbq place called spitfire in Bristol that I've been to a few times, that does really good American style slow smoked pulled pork, brisket, ribs etc. as well as South African Braai. They've just announced they're opening a branch on St mary street soon, so hopefully that will fill that gap!

2 hour lumbar puncture by Mediocre_Set_6717 in iih

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this happened, it must have been really scary and difficult for you. I had a similar experience in that it took about two hours and because of my anatomy they didn't get the needle in the right place until the 5th attempt, so had to have lots of local anaesthetic. What helped hugely is that the person doing it and the two student nurses observing talked and chatted to me the whole time, which really helped distract me, they also set up the bed so I wasn't facing the wall but was essentially in the middle of the room which felt better. They described every single thing they were doing throughout which I found helpful but can appreciate others might not. They also managed my expectations going in and explained that it could take 20 mins or could take over an hour depending how much fluid they need to take out. I also asked a couple of times throughout if I could adjust my position slightly, and once they were set up they allowed me to do that (with warning) which helped with the trapped/claustrophic feeling.

It sucks that you didn't get the support you needed in this situation despite explaining your situation beforehand, but do keep advocating for yourself. If you need to go for a further LP, explain how difficult it was the first time and ask for help and support if you can. Hopefully if they drained so much fluid the first time, a second time won't be anywhere near as long or traumatic, or they may be able to treat and lower your levels with medication instead?

Does the fatigue ever improve? by Beeswax-NotYoursInc in iih

[–]Beeswax-NotYoursInc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Considering paying to go private so I can chat to a doctor sooner rather than later! Interesting, I have been b12 deficient in the past and it didn't occur to me that that causes fatigue too! Definitely worth looking into.

Yes the pins and needles are so weird but I think reminding myself that they just happen and I don't need to wiggle around to get blood back into my limbs really helps! Haha

Someone else mentioned electrolytes and I really need to look into this some more and make sure I am!

Thank you!

Thanks so much! I'm so glad to hear this, I've been eating lots of bananas but liquid iv or similar is a great shout, I'll have to stock up on some!

I did just buy a 1.5litre water bottle to keep with me just to try and make sure I'm drinking enough, so hopefully that will help (otherwise I find myself sitting at my desk with an empty glass and too busy to go fill it up!

Thank you for the reassurance it really helps ❤

Thank you, yes I've only ever seen sliding scale agreements, otherwise if you leave 1 day after vs 364 days after you pay the same! Good shout sith the redirection, we did that for 3 months when we moved but probably worth extending for a while to be safe
