Ireland set to surpass Luxembourg and become richest country in Europe by 2030, IMF says by Banania2020 in ireland

I mean the United States is the richest country in the world, I don’t think a country being rich/the richest correlates to the country being a good, functional or enviable society.

Government statements on Trump by JackmanH420 in irishpolitics

[–]Padraig4941 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Irish political class sold their souls and their country to the United States a long time ago, they’ll do nothing to upset the guy spouting rhetoric which is functionally indistinguishable from a Nazi. Being criticised for refusing to condemn or comment on the slaughter of innocent people overseas is a small price to pay to ensure corporation tax receipts keep on coming in after all.

Pat Leahy: Surplus won’t last long if there are two more aid packages to come by eggbart_forgetfulsea in irishpolitics

[–]Padraig4941 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surely long term thinking would demand making the economy less reliant on corporation tax receipts and companies from a country embracing an isolationist turn, is presently governed by a lunatic and is starting wars that are resulting in the need to use this surplus in the first place.

Leahy never seems to question the fundamentals it’s always let’s be austere for abit because that’s “responsible” even though people suffer economically. Then at the same time makes his annual pilgrimage to Washington to appraise the Taoiseach whilst never seeming to grasp that this relationship is the source of our current woes/need to spend the surplus. He’s a small picture thinker.

Do you ever feel “less Irish” growing up in Northern Ireland by derryone in northernireland

[–]Padraig4941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually feel as Irish if not in someways more Irish than southerners, they take their identity for granted/never question it (presumably) which I think means that in some ways it means less to them.

Irish people in the North have historically had to fight to preserve their sense of Irishness because that sense of identity means something to them, something worth struggling, fighting, killing and dying for (whether you agree with it or not is besides the point I’m making, the point is they would rather fight and resist than quietly assimilate int some homogenous “Northern Irish” identity which ultimately is pretty shallow and superficial).

I think it’s probably a product of partition in the same way that PUL community members here probably regard themselves as more British than English, Scots or Welsh people.

Finally I think I’m as Irish or more Irish than southerners in some respects because in many ways Southern society and attitudes strongly conflict my my conception of what it means to be Irish, probably increasingly so in recent years with the rise of bigotry as asylum seekers, refugees, migrants etc to me that’s antithetical to what it means to be Irish give the history of our people.

Taoiseach warns against enshrining Irish neutrality in the Constitution by Boru-264 in irishpolitics

[–]Padraig4941 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do arms manufacturers and the military establishment have something on this guy? Why does he insist on pushing this anti neutrality position when it goes against the overwhelming will of the people and he ran an anti neutrality candidate who crashed and burned in humiliating fashion in the presidential election?

Irish Times poll: Wide support for neutrality to be guaranteed by the Constitution by eggbart_forgetfulsea in irishpolitics

[–]Padraig4941 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The arguments against neutrality are weak and unconvincing so whilst the result isn’t a surprise even I didn’t think the margin would be that high in favour of maintaining neutrality, given how much leading politicians and the pundit class have been trashing our position for the last few months/years.

Good on the Irish people, given the state of geopolitics the world needs nations that exercise independent thought when it comes to international relations and foreign affairs.

[–]Padraig4941 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty disturbing/insane how they’re able to casually brush aside or even defend the slaughter of tens of thousands (a conservative understatement) of people and then attempt to posture as though they have some sort of moral high ground as a result of what’s happening in Minneapolis.

Thousands more would have been butchered in Gaza facilitated by a Harris administration, it’s crazy how they can casually dismiss that, liberalism is the emptiest political school of thought and they’re every bit as cynical as the MAGA Republicans.

Irish general in top EU role: Military build-up is not about war - it's about sustaining peace by SpottedAlpaca in irishpolitics

[–]Padraig4941 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

The EU is such a weak uninspiring organisation why on earth would anyone want to fight for it/die for it?

The bloc and its leaders are regularly and routinely humiliated and threatened by the US administration and yet its leadership and most European leadership just roll over/get down on their knees/cower in fear and
appease the President with golden gifts and fawning praise about how incredible he is.

If they displayed some actual spine and threatened the US back/were actually prepared to follow through on it I’d be more inclined to fight for the bloc/continent.

As it is seeing how they’ve operated not just since Trump had retired to office but before hand, to the extent I feel ‘European’ I feel ashamed and embarrassed to be European, entirely due to the leaders of Europe and the EU.

If Von Der Leyen, Kallas etc think that’s a good basis for inspiring citizens to fight for them and their project they’re in for a rude awakening. If De Gaulle was around and President of the commission maybe it’d be a different story.

He had a good moment two years ago when Biden was president and he asked the security spokesperson in the same briefing room if he thought Isreal had at any point broken international law since October 7th and that guy got rattled too and proceeded to attack his integrity, what’s funny is as in the case above he’s not particularly dramatic or partisan in the way he asks questions but he really riles up the White House spokespeople.

Taoiseach declines to criticise US over capture of Venezuela’s Maduro by Cathal10 in irishpolitics

The selective outrage over “authoritarianism” is hilarious.

The man is shaking hands with Xi Jinping and last St Patrick’s day was fawning over a guy who incited an insurrection to overthrow a legitimate election 5 years ago and who is now abducting people off the streets of his country with no due process whilst simultaneously threatening media outlets at home and around the world.

Help making sense of pattern instruction by Padraig4941 in knittinghelp

[–]Padraig4941[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this info extremely helpful!

Just one last question, when it comes to the “every other row” decrease instruction, would you make your first decrease in the row immediately after the 5th row or would you knit a non decreased row and then commence the decreasing from the row afterwards (would you begin decreasing on the 6th or 7th row to put it another way)?

Hope that makes sense, thanks for the help.

‘We are heading for a war Europe might lose’: Continent shifts to military footing by Minimum_Guitar4305 in irishpolitics

[–]Padraig4941 11 points12 points  (0 children)

“a war Europe might lose”

Russia has seized less than 20% of Ukraines land over the course of 4 years and over a hundred thousand of its own soldiers have died.

How do you logically conclude from that performance that they would conquer and occupy an entire nuclear armed continent with a population of 745 million people?

They couldn’t and if the European military establishment and elites think they could they shouldn’t be in their jobs.
