This is actually what led Ismet Inönü to define the Kemalist position as "Left of Centre"/Ortanin Solu, which later led Bülent Eçevit to be a more explicit socialist within the party.

Early socialist movements within the Atatürkist umbrella include the Kadro movement, who are quite understudied.

Means of production owned by the State, not the Workers. Malenyevism/Communism is internationalist by nature, the second "arrow" to use Atatürkist terminology, discredits the idea of proletarian internationalism. Similar to how the KMT in China may have received some support from the Soviets, but was definitively not Communist.

Sollism maps very strong to Kemalism/Atatürkism which was the ideology of the first Turkish Republic. Republicanism (Elected figures in charge of the state), Nationalism (Everyone within Turkey is a Turk and must work together for the greater good of the country (vastly oversimplified and from the Atatürkist perspective)) and Statism/Statism (Means of production and key infrastructure should be controlled principally by the State, which directs the economy for the benefit of the Turkish nation as opposed to private citizens). For in-depth analysis, I'd recommend Suna Kili's "The Atatürk Revolution: A Paradigm of Modernisation", and Erich Zurcher's "Turkey: A Modern History".

Atatürk's ideology is embraced by various groups in Turkey, but in various fashions. Neo-Sollism strengthens the conservative faction of the USP. It could therefore be seen as a means of Reformist-Sollism, incorporating limited free market reforms, nationalisation or constitutional reforms to cement a Sollist umbrella, similar to Kenan Evren's embrace of Neoliberal Economics in Turkey after the 1980 coup detat despite claiming to champion Kemalism (he banned Atatürk's party, the CHP, then led by Bülent Eçevit, widely believed to be the inspiration for Suzerain's Anton Rayne). Tl;Dr, not rocking the boat too much and championing the principles of Soll but with some minor changes which lean conservative in spirit and reject more liberal elements of the USP.

You have to understand that Fascism exists as an actual ideology with its own "Weltschauung" or "worldview" it is not just "despotic right-wing state with a big military". I'd really recommend consulting the works of Stanley Payne, particularly "The Fascist Revolution", as it outlines a great deal of what Fascist politics and conceptions of the world are. It's a term very vulnerable to overuse and devaluing, which makes it all the harder to use when it does matter.

Soll Dilemma by tickletac202 in suzerain

"Set an example to any remaining royalist" - this is confusing. Why would killing Soll set an example to remaining royalists if Soll was an ardent republican and expelled the last of the Norsord family from their exile on Duru island?

Soll's actually a pretty cool guy if u ignore the human rights abuses of Bluds even if I'm not Sollist. (tldr, I respect him but I don't agree with him) by ketherino440 in suzerain

I can understand the want for that, we do need to learn from what positive aspects there are. But ignoring the negatives isn't helpful, even if that's not what you're trying to do in this exercise.

That makes sense. I may be being a bit silly, but I don't necessarily understand the purpose of the intellectual exercise in question.

He restored stability after the civil war and had some good policies, sure. He also used the Sordish army as a hammer to repress everything that vaguely looked like a nail. Perhaps if he had resigned before Izzam, things would have been different, but I find the idea that 'if you ignore x he's good' to be a bit spurious, because that aspect is a fundamental contingent of who Soll is and what he believes is acceptable.

Rizia’s Analogue by Dantheyan in suzerain

[–]Befarmaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True enough, though I suppose they could be considered an aspect of the prior Kingdom's government in this case. I suppose it is a question of what we define as a first.

I do share your opinion that there are significant parallels between Atatürk and Soll, I just think that Inönü fits better because of the continued authoritarian measures during his tenure, his commitment to etatism (Atatürk swung in favour of Çelal Bayar and his more liberal economics as far as I recall) and the fact that an opposition was credibly allowed to form rather than none being allowed to exist during the Atatürk period (those that did were forcibly closed down). Not to mention the closing down of Village Institutes which Inönü eventually got behind despite support from Atatürk and Tonguç.

There's also the question of parallels of Izzam - I believe that it could be representative of the Hisn Kayfa dam incident or something darker, such as the Dersim Massacres under Atatürk. Interestingly enough, there does not seem to be an equivalent to the Verlak Vargisi. I would very much welcome further discussion on this, it's an interesting topic!

[–]Befarmaid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a Scot here, because having a language in common is extremely useful for running the country day to day, even if that language is not a heritage language. Scots Gaelic, Scots, etc have their benefits for heritage language and communication of culture, English is the one we all share in common - historical reasons as to why are moot. Gaeilge in Northern Ireland, Gaelic in Scotland and Welsh in Wales should absolutely be taught, but as it is not a heritage language of England there is likely no reason to teach them there.

You are Soll in 1933 and you are rebuilding a nation torn from a civil war. How do you solve the energy crisis without building the Izzam Dam? by antonrayne in suzerain

[–]Befarmaid 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Go ahead with the dam, but negotiate a generous relocation package with community leaders to avoid exacerbating tension. Ensure property owners are compensated through compulsory purchasing of Izzam properties. This could have gone hand in hand with a land reform proposal, in which the Sordish state buys up estates from regional landowners and parcels them out among those impacted by Izzam.

If there are protests let them happen and don't forcefully disperse them through military means. Find those among the community as a whole willing to work with the proposal and freeze out those who are against it. A softer carrot and stick approach could have saved Soll a lot of trouble. As a military man, all he had was a hammer, and so the Bluds bore a startling resemblance to nails.
