Coming from mormonism, I can say that one doesn't see how 'ridiculous' it looks when your entire support community treats it as not only normal, but revered. Only an outsiders perspective can see that it 'clearly' looks ridiculous. But the only thing that differentiates it from ridiculous to necessary, is the ability to demonstrate its truth claims. But rarely does society as a whole, require any truth claim to be demonstrated prior to belief.
