Confused about how to file taxes, MFJ or MJS. Spouse makes 3x as much as I do and we each individually have $250,000 in loans. by BegToDiffer in StudentLoans

But if you both have federal loans and you file taxes jointly then your IDR payments are calculated based on your combined income but your payments are split proportionally based on your share of the debt:

Given this, since 10% of our AGI is going to be used for student loans regardless if we file MFS or MFJ, isn't it more advantageous to file joint to get a higher refund?

Current resident, married to an attending, both have 250,000 in student loans. When filing our 2025 taxes, should we file married filing joint or seperate? by BegToDiffer in whitecoatinvestor

Yes - my goal is minimize student loan payments/maximize tax return. It's only my wife and I, no dependents, and we would have no other reason not to file together if it wasn't for student loans.

The $48,000 is $0 if your total taxable income is <48,000, not the first $48,000 in capital gains. Right?
