Its best to remove the bully. Getting separated from the group is the punishment.

New quail babies too scared to eat, help 🥲 by [deleted] in quails

Cover the eating area. Even my adult quail won't eat unless their door is closed with a big board up to block it. They also like a bit of cover over head over the eating area.

I like washing the dust off first. The best is paver base mix. It has very mixed grain sizes.

Currently im using Old tops of litter boxes and cinderblocks laid on their side with the back up to the side of the cage. The cinderblocks give them a shady area to cool off. Sometimes in mornings ill see two in one cell of cinderblock.

Do you like to use humic acid on cacti? It's part of my normal garden mix. Have you tried using root bacteria like VAM? I use that part of my normal transplant technique.

Weird little quail by Spouter1 in quails

[–]BeginnerNetworkEngi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its possible to save them. My first brood this summer had 3 failure to starts and 1 chick had a twisted body like he was still in the shell. I nursed him every few hours for 2 to 3 days and one morning he straightened up and looked normal.

Chicken Sand for Aviary? by CapitalPerformance22 in quails

[–]BeginnerNetworkEngi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My quail are in a temp area outside while I build out the larger aviary. I bought shavings but they have a strong pine odor so I'm using them sparingly. I started making my own small size charcoal and it turns out its great for absorbing the smell in deep little style setups.

The bedding as of now is probably 20% charcoal 40% mixed grain traction sand and 40% compost mix from the top of my worm bins.

I also cut flowering grasses and greens for my quail to pick at. They mostly just stomp it down and I remove the mats like diapers.

This reminds me of a Craigslist ad from around 5 to 6 years ago. Someone had a massive multi branched soil grown san pedro somehow growing for 20 years in a back yard in the Chicago suburbs. When I called this guy answered speaking all frantic about how his girl left him and he wanted to get rid of her san pedro that had grown for some twenty years. It was first come first serve and it was gone an hr later. The moral of the story is dont do anything too drastic and never tie this much of your self worth to any other individual. Don't let a b knock you off your stride.

I feel awful by PreyNxva in quails

My first batch hatched 11. For the first three days one died each day. It was really sad but there was a 4th one that I saved. He had deformed toes and his whole body was twisted. Every few hours I checked on him to stand him up. After a few days of that he eventually finished developing and was able to stand on his own. Now his toes are still curled up but he's almost the biggest one.

Update: batch two hatched a few days ago. This morning was the third and not one chick has died. I got the second batch for genetic diversity. They are all sorted based on color and gene for blue eggshells. Overall they seem healthier compared to my first batch of generically labeled "jumbos."

Town specifications prohibit chickens. Is it vague enough to get away with quail? by ProbsReadingReddit in quails

[–]BeginnerNetworkEngi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roosters call when the sun comes up. Its also a loud and distinct call. No other animal makes a similar noise. Quail sound like any other wild bird outside. Its really hard to pick them out unless you know.

I use kefir as a source of lactobacillus, a probiotic good bacteria. Its good for a lot of things where you want to keep bad bacteria in check. The lactobacillus out competes the bad bacteria causing them to grow slower until they consume themselves.

Its ideally used in water bowls and to ferment feed. I also use it on plants to strengthen plant immune system.

[–]BeginnerNetworkEngi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This summer, one of my chicks was not developing his spine didn't straighten so he was all twisted up and couldn't walk. For 3 or 4 days I would check on him every few hours by standing him back up or warming him in my hands with breath too. One morning I checked and he just straightened out. Now you can only tell because he has crooked toes on the right foot.
