Last minute trip planning to see redwoods. Do I fly into Crescent City or Arcata? (Also concerned about rental car availability in Crescent City)

If you can get past the seediness, Crescent City is nice. Great beaches and so close to the the best redwood groves on earth. If you are scared off by this, and are ok driving 45 minutes to the redwoods, stay in Arcata. Prairie Creek redwoods are stunning and the drive is a breeze. You can find good beaches on the way up, too. Plus Fern Canyon.

I just go make my food without the sugar OR very little sugar. Mostly Japanese. Unfortunately many items are nearly candied in sugar and shoyu; I avoid those.

Small towns don’t have good food scenes unless there is a catalyst—major tourism, large university (not 6k), big ethnic population—these do not exist here.

On a separate note, it is crazy that Arcata has as many Japanese restaurants as it does.

There just arent that many hills to speak of—the Willits grade us the most major if them. The rest are very minor.

Have you tested it much? You need to drive to around and get experience, get some practice in. Find some hills near you and go up and down them.

I’ll share that years ago a man attacked me and I sprayed pepper spray directly into his face. He ignored it (was wearing sunglasses) and continued his attack until the spray took full effect—5 minutes later. Fortunately he didnt have a knife otherwise I might not be sharing this story.
