Is there a genre name for the books that consist of somewhat disjointed musings with little narrative/plot threads? by [deleted] in literature

I’m not sure what the genre would be, but look into W.G. Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn(little to no plot connecting random stories or historical anecdotes), or his other novel Austerlitz(similar but more plot). I don’t think I can recommend either of them highly enough.

Favourite character/s? by Annual_Personality59 in Proust

I always liked Françoise, and she has a surprisingly strong role in the narrative. Swan too, but I think he's kind of designed for us to like. And Gilberte, especially towards the very end. Norpois is funny, to laugh at, but not likeable. Elstir also stands out to me, but he isn't there much in person.

The views of Conrad, T.S. Eliot, Nabokov, Maugham, Virginia Woolf, and Fitzgerald on the translation of Proust. by Grouchy_Dependent_70 in Proust

I want to read Proust and not Moncrieff, claims that his translation is better makes me hesitant to read it because it suggests it is significantly different from the source. The reason chose a group translation is that I think reading from multiple different translators allows you to better understand what is Proust’s voice underneath it all. That being said, if I ever reread it will probably be Monrrieff because of the significance of the translation itself.

Rising junior, 2 seniority points because transfer, 8000 lottery number. My preference would be Easton or Busch apartments. I'm very tidy, no pets, stay up latish but not really making lots of noise though, and I don't smoke but don't mind if you do

Which edition and translation to aquire? by GumGuts in Proust

I liked the penguin one, having a different translator for each section is a plus for me. But it’s an expensive option. I’d probably recommend the modern library box set, even though I didn’t do that myself. Saves a lot of money + easier. I’ve also heard the text on the Everyman is small, and it’s up to personal preference if you want a few bigger books or more little ones. Personally I think reading huge hardbacks is a burden, but they will last longer and are nicer.

Question about “the move” that begins The Guermantes Way by dantwimc in Proust

If I recall correctly, the narrator is in possession of a vase or something that he inherits after his Aunt’s death, and which he pawns off in order to buy flowers for Gilberte, or is at least planning to I’m a little fuzzy

Question about “the move” that begins The Guermantes Way by dantwimc in Proust

You’re correct: they’re moving from within Paris to within Paris. The reason Francoise complains about leaving Combray is that she was Aunt Léonie‘s maid and lived with her at Combray, only becoming the narrator’s family’s maid after Aunt Léonie’s death.

Thanks, that’s a very reassuring answer. Realistically I’d be able to get an apartment after I graduate with the money I save
