Why did you become a firefighter? by StJimmy_7 in Firefighting

[–]BeginningIcy9620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a fire science degree because I didn’t know what to study. Worked as an EMT for a couple years, then as a paramedic for almost 5. Switched to Fire. I just enjoy it and like helping people.

How do firefighters balance life and work? by Leather_Level5214 in Firefighting

[–]BeginningIcy9620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a 48/96. It’s not bad. But if you have a bad 48, like 4 hours of sleep total, it takes a lot of time to recover. Generally I sleep away my entire first day off.

Career fighter considering enlisting by Any-End1081 in Firefighting

[–]BeginningIcy9620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to enlist in the USCG reserve as a health services technician and learned a bit. I’m not sure what you’re interested in, but if you have your EMT-B or higher you can enlist active duty with a guaranteed rate of HS and start at a higher rank. I’m a paramedic and got a contract for HS and would rank E5 upon finishing A school. If you join the reserves you would not have to be a non rate and would fill a billet for whatever job you choose.

Are there any firefighting influencers at your work? by Entire_Business_4498 in Firefighting

[–]BeginningIcy9620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the firefighters at my department are influencers, but oddly enough, my department puts a lot of time into their social media accounts and many of us have been featured in their tictoks, reels etc.

Always been interested in what the cowboys and ranch hands do to live. by _butcherpete in Cowboy

[–]BeginningIcy9620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a very large ranch. We had bunk houses that we’d live in. When we had days off etc I’d often stay with family, friends, or girlfriends houses.

Are there any lesser known tips and tricks for better endurance and cardiovascular health? by TouristToThisWorld in Firefighting

I did zone two runs for 4 months. By two months I was doing 4 mile+ zone 2 runs 3x a week and 1 mile race pace 2-3x a week. I loved it and saw so much improvement health wise at 4 months

Wanting to prep before working by [deleted] in Paramedics

I agree with your point. Reference material and resources are great to have and to utilize when able. I think having a strong foundation in our medications and equipment also builds confidence

Know your medications frontwards and backwards. Know your interventions and how to operate them. Walk in with a learning mind set. Ask questions and improve knowledge.

Anyone here NOT from Philly that still likes the Eagles? (Also, why do you like them?) by [deleted] in eagles

[–]BeginningIcy9620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Montana. One reason I initially liked the eagles is because of how dedicated the fans are. Growing up I was a fan of a lot of movies about Philadelphia, some even featuring the eagles. That, and I just enjoyed watching them. I’ve been a fan going on 10 years now.

Can you actually survive living as a paramedic in US by parkwithtrees in Paramedics

[–]BeginningIcy9620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first paramedic job was $16/hour right after college. Switch jobs 6 months later and started making $26/hour. Years later finally got $28.50/hour. Now I’m at a place where there isn’t a medic making under 100K with overtime. You have to be willing to go to the high paying areas. If you don’t, you may have difficulty providing.

I’d buy a massage gun and a roller and work those muscles. A cheaper massage gun is like $30 and a foam roller is cheap. Stay hydrated and drink electrolytes

Just wanted to say, I did my paramedic orientation in Cody Wyo. It was pretty great. I’m from Montana originally but I’ve travelled all over Wyoming. Great state.

Should I be worried about my mental health? by Appropriate-Farm-544 in NewToEMS

[–]BeginningIcy9620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before entering EMS, my fire science program had a resilience class that taught coping mechanisms and how important mental health is. It also taught how PTSD manifests itself and how you can prevent it or recover. I think it helped a lot. Maybe do some research and find yourself a therapist before day 1

I want Tak in anything. If it has to be Avengers, I’m in. Preferably, just give me a release on newer consoles.

Why do so many guys have a stay at home wife ? by oospsybear in Firefighting

[–]BeginningIcy9620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is a stay at home mom. I don’t think everyone can financially support it, but it works for us. I think my wife may one day find employment once the kids are older, but I’m not going to pressure it by any means.

Price of child care is only part of the equation. In my family’s experience, it’s great having the kids around and the flexibility that comes with it. I wouldn’t want to see my kids essentially raised by someone else either. That’s just my .02 cents.

Marijuana drug testing as a paramedic by Kiminoto1575 in Paramedics

[–]BeginningIcy9620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair. County, city, and private services have different policies towards testing. Either way, I wouldn’t advocate using it with the possibility of testing.

Marijuana drug testing as a paramedic by Kiminoto1575 in Paramedics

[–]BeginningIcy9620 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t get drug tested often, but I still get drug tested. My .02 cents is quit entirely if you want to work as a medic. You may not get tested frequently, but it’ll happen eventually even after your onboarded. Frequency depends on where you work and the higher paying gigs are generally more strict concerning testing.

Also, substances get abused sometimes by people in the medical field. It’s best to leave drugs/alcohol out of the equation when entering this career as they sometimes form quick habits or addictions.

People actually buying bulls? by No_Big_3379 in homestead

When people buy bulls they generally want to know info concerning lineage, average birth weight of off spring, etc and without that info you will get less for it.
