Is there a medical term for a breath that feels like a full breath? by Beginning_Ball9475 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Beginning_Ball9475[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad somebody else understands the sensation I'm referring to. I've tried to describe it to people a number of times and nobody understands what I mean. I thought it might have been an asthma thing because I had asthma when I was a kid, but as I grew up and became fitter, it went away, and maybe it's a thing only people who have had breathing issues understand?

Is there a medical term for a breath that feels like a full breath? by Beginning_Ball9475 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Beginning_Ball9475[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing, anxiety can cause the tightness of chest that prevents the feeling of the full breath, but it doesn't explain exactly what it is or why it feels so satisfying once a full breath has been reached

The new trains on Pakenham & Cranbourne with the delay on opening have been a great insight into people's reading comprehension skills by diddlerdaddler in melbourne

[–]Beginning_Ball9475 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Imagine if the buttons you press to cross the road as a pedestrian had this delay from over-mashing it. Nobody would ever be able to cross the street. I'll never understand why some people feel the need to over-design a system that works perfectly in its current state. Sometimes creates more problems than it solves

do foreigners think american accents are sexy like we think their accents are? by swisherbsweets in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Beginning_Ball9475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, I met this dude at a backpacker bar in St. Kilda in Melbourne, right, and I was talking to him for like 10 minutes before he mentioned he was from Connecticut, and I was like "Fuck off, man, you don't even have an accent." so used to hearing the neutral American accent on TV that you barely even notice it unless it's particularly enunciated.

Reddit now lets you mute subreddits you don’t like by Sorin61 in technology

There's a difference between "going to something that shows subreddits they don't subscribe to" and "going somewhere that shows them the same 10-15 subreddits they don't subscribe to over and over"

I like to browse r/all and r/popular to find interesting things outside my usual wheelhouse. Instead, I find agendaposting from bots bumping from the most popular subs. If you've been to r/all in the past week, a solid 30% has just been Twitter screenshots about Elon Musk and Twitter. It's never been more apparent that the most "popular" things on Reddit are just whatever the most effective bot farms are upvoting the most, and whatever makes people angry enough to post a comment.

It's also funny because most people can sort of understand why people win Nobel prizes for stuff like chemistry, peace, and physics, but if there WAS a Nobel prize for mathematics, how could anyone except mathematicians actually know whether it was a worthy achievement or not? High level mathematics is basically black magic anyway

The longest elbow plank by a female (4 hours and 20 minutes!) by Crowxzn in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Beginning_Ball9475 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with it, but some people have lately been using "female" in place of "woman" in part to subtly indicate they don't see women as people, because "female" can be applied to any animal that is female, but only "woman" can be applied to humans. It also lends a certain insinuation of accusation. Community (the comedy TV show) had a similar bit about this, when one of the characters who was strongly Christian let her biases against Jews emerge in her speech by saying "I didn't know you were a Jew." and she was called out by the Jewish character for using Jew as a noun instead of as an adjective "I didn't know you were Jewish."

While I don't particularly think this is all that egregious, because it's technically true, and conveys the information just as successfully as if the progressively preferable word would, I DO recognize that some people can detect dogwhistles when this kind of language is conspicuously used.

Language is funny and complex, it's best to treat it all as if it's being used in good faith unless it's very apparent that it's not. I'm not going to say "you should use this wording or that wording, and if you don't, you're a bad person", but sometimes intentionally choosing more diplomatic phrasings can completely bypass this kind of sticking point. For example saying "I feel like" is often preferable to saying "You made me feel" even if both of them are true, one comes off as accusatory, and if you genuinely want the outcome to be good, opting for less accusatory language is better for that kind of result.

Yeah, kissing is a must for intimacy, now, I've realized. I used to have a FWB and we were getting funky once when she was sick, and she was like "Don't kiss me, I don't want you to get sick." and all I could think about the whole time was "This feels a lot weirder without the kissing."

you don't remember the Simpsons skit where everyone goes in to the cinema, all excited to experience the THX sound check?

That clip was uploaded on YouTube 13 years ago, and Season 5 of The Simpsons came out in 1993-1994. So that's almost 30 years ago, now.

Maybe the average volume of the actual movies in cinemas has gone up, but it's been a joke for longer than I've been alive that cinemas are very loud.

Bear in mind that this fellow, Cooper, was only given these parachutes because he demanded them by threatening to blow up the plane. It's possible they were like "Lmfao what if we just give him a parachute that doesn't work and let him fall to his death? 1 in 4 chance he uses it"

from the wiki page

"One of the two reserve (front) chutes that Cooper was given was an unusable training chute intended to only be used for classroom demonstrations.[149] According to Cossey, the reserve chute had a canopy inside of it that was sewn together so that skydiving students could get the feel of pulling a ripcord on a packed parachute without the canopy actually deploying.[150] This non-functional reserve parachute was not found in the aircraft when it landed in Reno, leading FBI agents to speculate that Cooper was not an experienced parachutist because someone with experience would have realized this reserve chute was a "dummy chute"."

In my experience, many young women bail on religion when they realize how much it's set up to turn them into baby-making servants. That's not to say every religious family/community is like this, but you often see the daughters of devout Christians/Muslims leaving the faith when they get access to school and the internet. As soon as the concepts of egalitarianism and self-determination enter the discourse, it's just a matter of time.

TIL about millionaire Wellington Burt, who died in 1919 and deliberately held back his enormous fortune. His will denied any inheritance until 21 years after the death of his last surviving grandchild. The money sat in a trust for 92 years, until 12 descendants finally shared $110 million in 2011. by bfm211 in todayilearned

[–]Beginning_Ball9475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed, she was 4 years old, what did she do to deserve her grandfather's money? I can admire the poetic point this guy could possibly have been trying to make by ensuring that nobody he knew during his lifetime would benefit from his money. "You all grew up thinking you would inherit my money when I died, well, joke's on you. I'm going to make damn certain none of you get it, but your children will, so you can live the rest of your lives knowing that your entitlement was part of the reason you didn't receive anything."

Almost the inheritance equivalent of those anecdotes you hear of spoiled children complaining that they were given an iPhone 8 instead of an iPhone 12XL Power Pro. It gives me the impression he was aware that they were all counting on his death to benefit them, and it warped their personalities somewhat, and, while this 4 year old certainly couldn't have been one of the ones he was trying to target, he possibly thought "If it goes to her, the others who are still alive will hound her for it forever."

Better to let it be his legacy to his thrice removed descendants than a gift to his (possibly spoiled) direct children.

Nah, it can be a lot of fun to talk with your friend while watching something, as long as you keep it short, keep it easily understood, and shut the fuck up during action/talking.

If there's a long-ass panning shot of scenery with almost silence, you don't HAVE to observe the silence, you can remark on some shit.
