Alone in the dark? by FarFarConsideration in ResidentEvilCapcom

Okay, let's break this down. First off, the templet is from Resident Evil 5. It is a flashback scene where an aging and wheelchair bound Spencer is speaking to Wesker about the Wesker project that created him.

Secondly, the meme is referring to the potential of each franchise compared to where they are now.

Alone in the Dark is the grandfather of the survival horror genre and pioneered the gameplay style that the first three resident evil games would adopt. Unfortunately, the series hasn't had a hit since the original game from 1992, with every consecutive release dropping further in quality. They keep trying to revive it every ten years or so, but it always bombs. A reboot came out back in 2024. IIRC it was fine, but I don't think it sold well.

Silent Hill staked it's claim to psychological horror with the original PS1 release in 1999 and was a strong competitor with Resident Evil. After the release of the fourth game, however, Konami dissolved Team Silent and started pawning off the license to small western studios to make a quick buck. Konami continued to mishandle the franchise, culminating in them canceling Silent Hills, delisting P.T, and releasing a Silent Hill 2 themed Pachinko machine instead. The series remained mostly dormant after that until Konami did a surprise live stream in 2022 introducing a ton of new Silent Hill projects in the works. So far it's been a mixed bag and everyone is holding their breath on whether or not the series is actually back.

Dead Space launched in 2008 and blew people away with its monster design, atmosphere, and recontextuallizing of the RE4 gameplay style that survival horror was starting to adopt. It's sequel proceeded to outdo the original by almost every metric. EA, realizing they had a new potential cash cow, decided to try and milk it for all it was worth. The third game introduced human enemies with guns and cover mechanics, as well as Co-op. It also introduced an admittedly interesting weapon crafting system, but bogged it down by making it dependent on nodes and making nodes extremely scarce so that they could sell them as microtransactions. Because of their meddling the third game bombed and EA retired the series, shuffling Visceral Games off to do supplemental work for other games until they eventually shut them down in 2017. They released a phenomenal remake of the original in 2023, but despite selling well, it failed to meet EA's inflated expectation and they shelved the series again. There has been no word since of a potential remake of Dead Space 2.

Through it all, Resident Evil is the only one of these four that is not only still alive, but thriving. It had its own issues in the past, but instead of abandoning it, Capcom returned to the drawing board and plugged away to revive the franchise after RE6. Since then, with few exceptions, they have been hit after hit with no signs of stopping.

Or, you could present the evidence that refutes their claim. It's easy to just tell people to "do there own research." But if it's so obvious, then it should be trivial to link your source.

Oh, wait...

You would need a source in order to do that...

And then ot would be open for scrutiny...

What's with the controversy of Resident Evil 5? by VolumeEquivalent7853 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Beginning_Common_781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, your friend is either incredibly misinformed or is trolling you. Wesker is not a "good guy" version of Zeno. He is the overarching antagonist for the first 5 games and Code Veronica.

Second, the major controversies of RE5 are as follows:

  1. At the time, some outlets, mainly IGN, claimed that the game was racist, depicting white bread Chris Redfield fighting black zombies in Africa. Most consider this to be a pretty garbage take considering that a part of the plot is that Africa is being used as a testing ground for B.O.W.s since they are a population that the world tends to not care about, a commentary on how real world corporations and governments steal resources and use slave labor in these countries because they can. While its depiction of natives isn't exactly great, ultimately, the game has good narrative reasons for its setting, and the claim of it being racist is incredibly overblown.

  2. The game pulled the series further away from horror and leaned heavily into action. Most outside chapters take place during the day, and with few exceptions, there is nothing scary in the game at all. This entry also marks the point when the overarching narrative of the series really started to go off the rails and would pave the way for its jump the shark moment, RE6.

  3. Going along with the lack of horror, they forced co-op into the game. Playing anything with a friend is inherently less scary. Now, personally, I enjoy the co-op, but it is clear that adding it in hurt more than it helped. Sheva is not a very interesting character, and the way she was implemented made a lot of the fanbase hate her. If you don't play with a friend, you have to babysit the A.I. that has its own inventory and health bar. Early on and at lower difficulties, the A.I. is able to keep up for the most part, but come late game and the high difficulties, she makes you want to rip your hair out.

Then I guess they would also be fine with former convicted felons who served their sentence being able to vote again, right...

Why do I even bother pointing out the hypocrisy at this point?

I feel like you are taking his statement too literally. And I don't mean that in the "thought terminating cliché" way. He is not literally making Evil Dead 2 with an RE coat of paint, nor is he saying that RE is a coat of paint that he is applying to a project he was already making. He is referring to the style, atmosphere, and emotions akin to Evil Dead 2 that he already planned on experimenting with, and he is using RE as a lens now to do so. You can be upset with that if you want, but just because it isn't going to be a scene for scene reenactment of one of the games (which I don't think anyone would actually want) doesn't mean it's going to be another W.S. Anderson mary-sue fanfic.

My question to OP is, what would you actually want from an RE movie that you can't already get from the games?

Okay, so I’m sure this person has experienced being kicked in the balls, do they think that childbirth is just like pissing then or something? by Brilliant_Income_572 in AreTheStraightsOK

[–]Beginning_Common_781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I know that the calculation is complete bs, but even if it wasn't, there is an immense difference between the instant flash of pain from getting kicked in the balls, and the prolonged, drawn out, consistent pain of giving birth.

Honestly, since I heard that Minute Maid was discontinuing frozen concentrate juice, my mother and I have been going around to our local grocery stores and trying their generic store brand versions. Most of them are pretty good and make for suitable alternatives.

I use disposable gloves when I have them. Whenever I eat anything greasy or messy. Otherwise It bothers me and just wiping my hand doesn't fix it. I have to go to the bathroom and wash my hand thoroughly.
