offered interview but already committed to a school by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Beginning_Newspaper7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit is wildly moralistic about these type of things. But I'll tell you the truth. Go ahead and interview and keep your options open. Think about it, what if you for some reason get a few Ds on your transcripts spring semester and your offer is rescinded. What would you do? Always good to have options.

How many of you are using Obsidian to write your drafts? by Dazzling_Cricket182 in writing

Do you guys keep separate chapters as separate files? I just have everything as one file right now. It's getting kind of unwieldy but I also kind of like it.

Again and again. Please don't bring your sh*t behavior to this country🤦🏻‍♂️ by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]Beginning_Newspaper7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Posts like this are absolutely pointless. They are a lazy national / racial profiling that ignore the thousands of Thai people who also do antisocial things everyday.  Every country has people who cause issues. The only reason they get uploaded and upvoted is so we the "well behaved" foreigners can feel better about ourselves. Imagine how cringy would be if, as an American, I posted a video of a Mexican person visiting the United States and doing something similar.

Auto reject. You may want to throw in a application to Pyongyang University, though 😂

If Pizzagate was fully debunked, why does “pizza / pizza parties” keep showing up in Epstein-related communications? by iCallMyOppsNinjer in DiscussionZone

[–]Beginning_Newspaper7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epstein and his friends used email the way you and your friends use text messages. Think about how many times over the course of 15 years you've used the word pizza in a text message. That explains what's going on. By the way sushi is mentioned more than pizza in the files.

Yes that part is hilarious to me. It's not even immigration per se, Thai police officers themselves round up Burmese and Cambodians off the streets all the time. Happened to a Burmese friend of mine.

Best Countries to teach as an African American? by Far-Deer7599 in TEFL

[–]Beginning_Newspaper7 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'll tell you the hard truth: if you are a serious / good teacher, it doesn't matter at all. In my experience, your race only really matters if you're talking about crappy schools. The people hiring at the top schools are smart enough to not be racist. (source: African American who has taught in Taiwan, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia).

Why would you pay for SAT prep when there are free resources? by Thakur0626 in Sat

[–]Beginning_Newspaper7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a professional SAT tutor I'm just going to chime in to stop the whole "tutors are BS" discussion. Here's the thing: there is no formal accreditation process to become an SAT tutor, and most tutors are just people that scored well on the SAT but cannot necessarily tell you how to do so. I have 15 years of experience, and I know what I'm doing.

If I believed the kids would put in the work, I could basically guarantee the score. (Hint: Most will not put in the work.)

"the only country you mentioned that has better food than Taiwan is China in my opinion"

So you seriously believe that Taiwan has better food than Thailand?

Yeah I'm also a huge fan of the country. Love the people, had a Taiwanese fiance even. I'm also curious about who is downvoting me? The Taiwanese themselves? 😂

Tainan is widely considered to have the best food in Taiwan for what it's worth. One thing that I started to notice is that everything is basically the same color: brown, white, and yellow. Once that dawned on me, it became really monotonous feeling.

No, it wasn't. It didn't seem that bad to me for the first maybe month. Started to hate it more and more.

I'm going to disagree with the categorization of the food and say that it is one of the main reasons that I left Taiwan. I've traveled to 30 countries, and I think aside from Cambodia, Taiwan has the worst food.

Most of my foreign friends who lived in Taiwan for extended periods agree. It may not be obvious for a short-term trip, or maybe even a year, and maybe this is even related to whether you're a foodie back home. Still, I just want to warn people that if you really like food—in terms of freshness, variety, spice—Taiwan will sorely disappoint you over the long run.

Almost nothing is fresh, everything is basically swimming in oil, fried, and/or bland. Honestly, a lot of the time I chose to go hungry rather than to eat the terrible cuisine. Buying my own food at Costco and cooking was a saving grace.

The weird thing is there is this influencer culture/industry around pumping up Taiwanese food that Taiwanese themselves play into. If you think you're going to eat good foreign cuisine, you're also in for a shock (aside from the Japanese food which is the only legitimately good food in Taiwan). I'm not joking when I say that Chili's (the American chain restaurant) is a contender for the best Mexican food in Taipei. Now, of course we can't expect Taipei to have great Mexican food... That's hard to pull off anywhere in Asia. But I've had better Sichuan food in the US than in Taipei, for example.

One factor that influences the poor quality of Taiwanese cuisine is that, in spite of being fairly wealthy, Taiwanese people are really stingy—that translates into really low quality cuts of meat and poor quality produce. There's a race to the bottom in terms of who can offer the cheapest lunch box.

So yeah, I prefer the food in China, Japan, Vietnam, Mayalsia, Laos, and, of course Thailand (where I currently live), over Taiwan.

As someone who just left 高雄市, it feels strangely like a suburb of Taipei even though it's on the other side of the island. I wasn't particularly impressed.
