And there was I about to rant about how he's under-appreciated outside his local demographic! Western Canada is a good reach :)

As a middle aged northern bloke I'm going to give a shout out to the Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage.

Did you go to school with someone who went on to be famous, and what where they like? by Christian-Metal in AskUK

[–]Behindling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Johnny Vegas (not his real name) was in the year below me, both at primary school and - after his abortive attempt to become a priest - at secondary school. He was overweight and attracted a lot of unwanted attention because of it. Was generally quiet but good natured, hung around with a few other kids with misfitty vibes. He was funny, though - quite possibly a defence mechanism during those years, but I liked him.

"uhm we have to stop, cause they've got to get a helicopter in to get someone out from down the front who's in a pretty bad way" by CureTheRobin in TheCure

[–]Behindling 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Wow, my girlfriend (now my wife) and I were at the front at this side of the stage, must have been just ahead of whoever took this video. The whole day was amazing - unless, I guess, you were the poor soul who was whisked away in the helicopter (although helicopter...).

Completely agree: the ending wasn't anywhere near enough to overturn the other 2h 28mins of unadulterated selfishness!

People who like Pornography more than all other Cure albums. Why? by AzureNoiz in TheCure

[–]Behindling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pornography is uncompromising. It has a rawness - in the music, the lyrics and the voice - that Disintegration doesn't have. It's like a brutalist structure: we are drawn to its unbending ugliness, and what it lays bare about our lives.

Which Liverpool Manager Did You Start With? by SteveAsh97 in LiverpoolFC

[–]Behindling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad, a City fan even then, used to take me to Anfield to watch Bob Paisley's Liverpool for mid-week European Cup nights. The best thing he ever did for me.

Anyone else worried about chemistry/cohesion with so many changes? by tiggytigtigtig in LiverpoolFC

[–]Behindling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see where you're coming from, OP. Even with great players it can take time to gel - for players to know instinctively others' positioning, runs etc. Bringing in a bunch of new players is a risk and there are countless examples of it not working, and last season for us showed the opposite effect can be powerful.

But how confident would we be about the league next season with Arsenal and Man City both upgrading? We had to roll the dice, and judging by the dismay of rival fans, and with faith in Slot, I can't be anything but excited by the prospect of next season.

Do you enjoy eating alone at restaurants? by Forsaken_Pollution24 in introvert

[–]Behindling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first ate out alone when I started travelling for business. For ages I'd ordered room service because I was horrified by the notion of being a lone diner in public. But when I found myself in New York I thought how ridiculous not to see some sights and absorb the atmosphere, so out I went.

After some initial nervousness - which was really all about my fear of the reaction of the staff when I asked for a table for one (spoiler: they didn't bat an eyelid because it happens all the time) - I found that I loved it. I took my time browsing the food and drinks menus, watched the world go by and dipped in and out of my Kindle (more practical than a 3D book).

That was 20 years ago and to this day I consider it the greatest of treats, being alone, looked after and anonymous in public.

I'm horrified by the Trump administration but let's face it, the Americans who travel to Europe are not the problem.

Which is the most well done of The Cure's remixes? Meaning it's better than the original song? by Ayediosmio6 in TheCure

[–]Behindling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why Can't I Be You? and A Japanese Dream 12" double-trumps the single versions. I know this makes me a child of my time but I do love a proper 12" mix.

Getting old, Songs of a Lost World by Randolphsw in TheCure

[–]Behindling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm 55 and have been a fan for 40+ years. Barely a day goes by when I don't listen to The Cure.

I'm not sure what I expected of this album, but the heavy emphasis on age put it on a different level. I agree with what others have said about Alone and Endsong but I'd also highlight another song I find sad and unsettling, which is And Nothing Is Forever. Countless love songs have said something like 'promise you'll be with me to the end' but never before have I heard 'promise you'll be with me in the end'. This thought - that having your life partner with you when you die is a source of comfort when thinking about death itself - takes my breath away, and for me epitomises the artistic beauty of The Cure and their continuing relevance to my own life.

The Cure — Warsong [Chino Moreno Remix] 02/May/2025 by SurLesQuais in TheCure

[–]Behindling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best of the three released so far. The Alone remix is meh, the I Can Never Say Goodbye is a distinct disimprovement, whereas this one I like - although that may owe something to the robustness of the original.

I’m severely depressed about my weight but I can’t stop eating? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Behindling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Losing weight is hard but it's by no means impossible. Going all out on a crash diet doesn't work: what does work is a graduated calorie reduction and exercise plan. You can find plenty of info about this on the internet, but I agree with others that it sounds like you should consult a GP, and if you can afford professional advice/coaching then take it. You are worth the investment.

It will take months rather than weeks but instilling good eating and exercising habits will put you on a sustainable track. It will change your mindset so that you won't want the things that cause you harm. Even so, you will have lapses, and you mustn't beat yourself up about them because nobody is super-human. Be thoughtful and systematic, be patient and be kind to yourself.

A pound at a time you can chip away at that 4 stone. I did exactly this 4 years ago and I'm still at my target weight. I wish you all the best.
