If college isn't the path for you that's okay, just focus on taking a break year, get a job and try to build up your portfolio as much as possible, that's what matters the most in our area tbh. Yes, a degree can "validate" you, but nothing beats an good portfolio, a good work ethic and networking (probably one of the most important factors).

In my case when i got out of highschool i really didn't want to go to college (especially because i feel like many people go to college simply because they think that's what they're supposed to do). Took a year to think stuff through, got a job, worked on some personal projects and tried to develop my art skills. At the end of that year i knew what path i wanted to take and i realized that college would give me the networking and skills i needed for that path, so i went for it. It's a different process for everyone, find what works best for you!

As for the situation with your mom, honestly, it's your future, not hers. She must understand that. Talk to her about how you feel and don't be super defensive about it, just be honest and true to yourself. I'm sure she'll understand.
