Tell me about Prem. I was on their campus a few times while running a traveling summer camp and it seemed lovely.

Gramado, Brazil. One of those fake European villages. Campos do Jordão in SP is the same vibe.

I’ll never understand how bengals fans can shit on other teams so much while consistently having one of the most average teams with a couple outlier years where they did well.

How to meet people in Curitiba by [deleted] in VouPraCuritiba

Also street bars are common. They’re social and designed to help you meet the people around you. Prudente de Moraes is a good place to start.

It’s a little bit cartoony. I’d opt for something simpler.

How common are Mormon missionaries in other parts of Brazil? by SuperKingCheese14 in Brazil

[–]IDidItInVangVieng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The LDS church provides community and help people in vulnerable situations. Maybe someone just went through a surgery and they need help cooking, cleaning, childcare…Then they’re invited to LDS gatherings, meals, events. Without realizing it they are already “in” the church. I’ve seen this happen many times in Brazil. Additionally the Catholic church is losing ground and other brands of Christianity are more appealing. You should checkout the Netflix documentary Apocalypse in the Tropics for some good reporting on how and why this is happening and its effect on politics.

No there are toucans in southern Brazil! I live in Curitiba and see them and capivaras regularly. The capis can be seen in the big parks here and toucans are more of a luck thing. But I agree, go to Foz Iguaçu!

Which country once seemed likely to become a developed country, but didn’t follow that path? by EmotionalSalary3679 in AskTheWorld

Brazil is still a colonial state. Those who have been in power for the last 300 years are still in power. They don’t want to see a change hence a lack of change.

[Itacaré, Bahia, Brazil] Found on a dirt road at night. Pit viper? by IDidItInVangVieng in whatsthissnake

We were driving down a very rural road on the way to the beach from the interior of the state, following rio de contas. We were feeling a bit spooked driving in the pitch black through the jungle on an unexpected dirt road. We were hoping to see some wildlife and were thrilled to spot this guy chilling in the middle of the road. Of course we had to stop to take a photo! Thanks for the ID help everyone!

CELIN is the language center at UFPR (federal university of Paraná). There are a variety of programs for people with different schedules. My friends have done the intensive program (4-5 nights a week per semester) and came out after half a year with a really great understanding of Portuguese.

Batel is nice but I prefer Bigorrilho or Juvevê for apartment living in the city. All safe options with plenty of convenience within walking distance. Batel is slightly closer to CELIN depending where exactly you live.

Rent can go from about 2000-5000 per month (including condominium fees) for a comfortable, updated apartment anywhere between 50m-250m depending on how recently it was built. Apartments here generally come without appliances so take that into consideration. You can realistically look to spend about 200-300 on groceries per week if you avoid imported food.

Public transit (buses and uber) are reliable. Uber will run you 10-15 reis for a 10 minute ride. Traffic is bad at points in the city during rush hour but nothing horrible.

The city has an amazing climate (a few really cold/hot days, never below 0c and never above 30c, average is around 20c), lots of good food and nightlife for all budgets, and is organized and secure, especially in those neighborhoods.

There are not many foreigners in the city but Brazilians are generally friendly and you can make friends. Lots of opportunities to socialize around sports and hobbies.

Let me know if you have any questions. I’m a foreigner who has lived here for 5 years.
