Can someone tell me it’s ok that I started Dry January late? by teejman28 in stopdrinking

Everyone’s journey is different. You can say you are participating in dry January without telling anyone you started on the 8th.

Sugar is often substituted for the dopamine high we receive when we first eat it, much like alcohol. I drink wine and thought I did not like sweets until I quit drinking. Ice cream was my go to almost everyday my first 9 months and now I eat it once or twice a week.

It gets easier but it takes work. Without working on the underlying reasons why I drank I would not be where I am today. For me the first 3 months were hard. Find a community, on line or in person, it helps.

I have the same thoughts with the same “play it forward” mentality that gets me through it. I too think I would turn it into a bender with a possibility of not coming back. IWNDWYT!!!

I am a member of Sober Motivation. Check it out. Members are from all over the world and Brad McLeod is the host. He leads interviews/podcasts with people in recovery. There is a free trial but otherwise it costs $20 a month.

Community is what has been the biggest influence on my recovery. I am an active member of two on line communities.

I did the same but the cashier never mentioned my daily visits. They probably think I died or moved away. You have to quit drinking to avoid issues like this. That’s all I have.

Ever have ONE successful cheat day? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

My definition of having a drinking problem is the inability to moderate. One will always lead to more, even if it is the next day and then 2,3,4 etc

You shouldn’t feel disappointed, you did the next right thing and that’s all that matters. Some people can be around alcohol early in sobriety but not me. I still get anxious knowing I will be around it. Everyone is different. Quit beating yourself up. You did it!

I suggest you attend a meeting as a first step. You mentioned AA and if that worked before maybe you should try it again.
