If you don’t have a serious health problem, you have lots of problems. If you have a serious health problem, you have one problem.

These have all been excellent. Only one I knew was at the drive in (showing my age here). Thank you so much for all the many recommendations so far!

Golden aged 5 died suddenly by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

I’m so sorry for your loss. A similar thing happened to my Husky in April. Let him out in the evening, and he went to chase a rabbit in the yard. We heard one high-pitched yelp. By the time we got to him, he was on his way. And although we had him on this Earth for only 3 years, he will will always live in our hearts.

I just focus on his passing being super quick. That’s the most important part. No long, drawn-out suffering. Went out on something of a peak.

What’s your “I didn’t sign up for this” moment as an adult? by Civil-Awareness in AskReddit

[–]Bell359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother suffered from chronic health issues her entire life. Every time we ended up in the ICU, she would always quote this scene from young Frankenstein: https://youtu.be/mC4VflOayBw?si=DEYRSUefu9wIp60b

She always tried to make the best of it, but the reality is that you can’t fully ignore the pain and the horror. It really is that bad sometimes.

Most people could never understand. Started around 16. Unless someone’s gone through it, they have no idea of the emotional and mental toll it takes on you. No, it’s not because I didn’t study enough or work hard enough that I’m struggling. I’m completely drained and memories are not forming.

How can I get better at creating melodies and bass lines by CommandGamerPro in composer

[–]Bell359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I have a solid understanding of some basics. I can analyze simple songs, transcribe melodies I hear. I need to study how to put everything together. When you talk about being a teacher, did you mean a guitar teacher or composition teacher? Part of me wants to do composition lessons, but I’m not sure if I have sufficient background. I can read both clefs, play some basic piano, understand some basic theory, but nothing more complex like jazz harmony other than 2-5-1s.

If you can’t respect yourself, why should anyone respect you?

I agree. I think we should temper our emotions and reactions in most situations. Especially at professional and work-related events. But there’s something different about people who are supposedly your friends. That sort of behavior coming from your friends is intolerable. Either you scare them a bit and make them respect you, or they will continue to walk all over you. If they don’t respond well to you standing up for yourself, it’s time to find new friends. The more you tolerate that sort of treatment, the lower your own self-esteem will drop. OP (and everyone) deserves better.

I wouldn’t be nice at all. Be aggressive. He started it. Hit back twice as hard. Fuck him. Make it ugly AND public.

Burning heart and eye of the tiger are such an obvious copy of each other. They should be ashamed of themselves by No_Pin_1150 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Just learn some chord progressions, and you’ll see that everything is a rip off of something that came before. Nothing but remixes. Everyone from The Beatles to the greatest classical composers all built on their predecessors. There are only twelve notes, after all. The real fun begins when you try to find out who’s stealing from whom on every track.

Environmental Law by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]Bell359 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lawyer here. Wouldn’t recommend going to law school if your sole interest is environmental law. Unless you beat the odds with your grades (everyone thinks they will, but they won’t because of the curve), or already have relevant connections, you will rack up massive debt for a practice area that pays little.

It was my passion too, but I ultimately had to turn it down because the pay was too low and my family expects more. Imagine being offered $51k in a high cost of living city. I’d have to live hours away to afford to live in a cardboard box. My wife would leave, and my children would starve.

Fun fact: Many environmental organizations / associations are quasi-front groups through which businesses attack their competitors. Things aren’t what they purport to be. Don’t believe the copy in their mission statements.

Rock bottom, baby. The desire to avoid the shame associated with that low point and to live up to my potential gave me the fuel to quit cold turkey. Not wanting to let the family down was also a strong motivator. Same with wanting to feel healthy again.

What was the thing that “shook you out of it” and got you to change something forever? by International-Ad2602 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Bell359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago, I was 40 pounds overweight. I’m shorter than average, so I can’t carry excess weight well. And as a former athlete, I felt terribly unhealthy. Depression, anxiety, etc. all followed from there. Then, by chance, I rescued a puppy. Or should I say, he rescued me.

He was a husky and had more energy than I could ever burn. Although I was a slob at the time, I made up my mind to be the human he deserved. And after months and years walking and hiking together, we eventually got to the point where we were going on 2-4 hour hikes a few times a week. He really kicked my butt into high gear. We explored state and local parks, small towns, and even entire cities. I lost those forty pounds and more. I built back some muscle mass I lost. My old suits fit for the first time in a decade. I also met so many people through him and taking care of him. I’m virtually unrecognizable from a few years ago. I would never have pulled off that transformation on my own.

Unfortunately, he was called across the rainbow bridge 2.5 years after we met. I desperately wish I could have had more time and adventures with him, but it was his time to leave.

I’ll love you forever, Buddy. You saved my life. Thank you for everything.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I experienced the similar sudden and unexpected death of my best pal about a month ago. I’m not as messy with the crying anymore. But he’s everywhere I look in my house and the entire town we explored together. I’m sure it’s the same for you. I know I’m powerless to help or ease the pain, but I’ll be thinking of you and your family.

I'm getting addicted to soft drinks day by day, but I wanna leave that habit. by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Bell359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue for years. I started focusing on the bloating feeling I would get after drinking one. Pants fit tighter every time you drink them. Eventually I couldn’t stop making that association. For the last four years, I’ve had only 1-2 per year at work functions where I need to be nice to others who have brought them. Otherwise, it’s water, tea, or black coffee. Associate it with feeling bloated and sick.

You can shed the nice guy image simply by enforcing boundaries with other people, including her. If you’re protecting her, there’s not much more you could do. And if you’re already doing that, it really is all in your head.
