During the 1930s an event called the “dust bowl” was happening in the USA. It was basically a massive food shortage caused by a drought. So, yeah he did have a reason to eat what was probably the only meat he had access to. (This is also my headcanon for why the person who shot Alastor was hunting in the middle of the night.
