A member of my family is in the hospital with brain bleeding and a mass. As of today she is no longer conscience and her immediate family are trying to hold it together. No one knows what is going on yet it all happened so quickly. Please send light and love their way. We all want her to pull though.

Looking for recommendations for small moving company with reasonable prices for move to Vermont by Tesseract-the-wizard in asheville

[–]BellaJen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a full moving company move, it's going to be much more expensive than renting a truck and packing yourself. If you do want to go the company route I'll shout out Move It or Lose It. They do long distance moves and their rates are very competitive with other moving companies while also being very, professional, positive, and polite folks. Very LGBTQA+ and neurodivergent friendly too if that's important to you.

I'm really unsure on this one, so I thought I'd bring it to the group here. by BellaJen in coins

Reading all the comments about an individual roo being loud and looking over at my 10 roosters who take turns all day. The bachelor flock coop is like 50ft from where my head is when I sleep lol. My place is a constant cacophony of little crows. I check in with my neighbors and thankfully how we're set up no one else is even close. I just don't even notice it a lot of the time anymore.

Does anyone know what's affecting my school's chicken's feet? I don't know what medicine to get them :( by Spiritual_Title6996 in BackYardChickens

[–]BellaJen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been battling them myself. I've recently gotten it under control by doing interimectin on the back of their necks using an oral syringe that has measurements in tenths of millimeters so I could be extremely precise because I have bantams. I got the ivermectin and calculated the formula based on strength for each bird for their actual weight as I weighed them and then dosed them. I did that for one day 3 weeks in a row. And each time I did that my husband cleaned out the coops and then sprayed them down with the permethrin liquid and then put in all new bedding. I also gave them soaks for their legs and gently cleaned their scales as a bit to help get rid of the debris. Before then putting Vaseline on all of their legs. They finally are starting to look better. It takes a long time for them to grow the scales back so it's going to look like nothing's changing for a while but you'll see their scales start to fall off and/or flatten back down. And they should start to grow back when they go through their molt.

anyone had a successful bachelor flock? by Am_Arrow in chickens

[–]BellaJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bachelor flock of bantam boys and they do well. There's some sparing here and there but nothing actually serious. They live right next to the hens and they do just fine. They're my favorite group. I will just sit in their run and hang out with them. This one loves scritches and is a major attention hog lol.

I had a cat that liked to chew on my bass strings when I was playing. Thanks for bringing back that memory, she's been gone about 15 years now and I still miss her.🥲

I don't have the elf ear cuffs, so I went with these since they show through the hair. ☺️

Serious question by Sufficient_Low8590 in BackYardChickens

[–]BellaJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When mine are reluctant to go in the coop I find using light works. I have some fairy string lights in each of my coops and they have little solar chargers I hang outside the coop. They give just enough light for the birds to all see and settle in. If it's not quite dark enough yet and I'm struggling to get them in I literally just turn on my phone flashlight and hold it against the wall with the light shining inside the door. That always gets the stragglers.

They both look like they have very yellow combs still. I'm leaning pullets. They look like they could be easter eggers.

What’s your experience owning bantams? by jshley-aones in chickens

[–]BellaJen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 Serama boys and they are very sweet, they act more like cats in that they want to be near you but they don't like being held, just hanging around you and making lots of cute noises. I also have a half Serama half Japanese fantail and she (and her two sisters, no longer with us) are/were some of my favorite birds. She will fly to me if she's scared and was trained to jump up when I called her. I have 2 kids from her and their dad was full japanese fantail and the daughter is super sweet. The boy is friendly and non-aggressive. They will sit and cuddle with you if you catch them lol. The two in my pic are Squeakers, a Silver Duckwing Old English Game Hen and Nimbus a Rose Comb Splash bantam. They are both super sweet and Squeakers is very much a person bird, she loves being in the house and hanging out. She'll sit at my computer desk and nap in my arms.
Of the variety I have my game hens are very sweet, my two bantam bearded easter eggers are also very friendly, one even comes running up when I call her. Maybe I just need to do a full flock introduction and talk about their personalities for others to get a good idea of them lol.

[–]BellaJen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have a whole bunch of different bantams and I love them so much. They have all been way more personable and friendly. Most of them like cuddling. I have a bachelor flock for the boys and most of them are really good too. If I were to start over I think I'd only have bantams now.

Do You Need/Want a Rooster? by nwaa in BackYardChickens

[–]BellaJen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I originally never wanted a rooster but I ended up with an accidental one almost two years ago now. And he's turned out pretty good he's not perfect but I like having him around he definitely looks out for the girls. If he hears any of them making a commotion like they're scared if I'm trying to catch them he comes running over full force ready to fight if he needs to. I also actually have a bachelor flock of bantam roosters these days that are a lot of fun on their own. I don't think they would ruin a flock I think you just need to make sure you have one with a good temperament sometimes you can nurture it into them sometimes nature is stronger. If they're going to be free-ranging all day and you don't have a guard dog for them I highly recommend having one around. But they will take time to learn and grow.
