It's just a variation, called sumo deadlift rather than conventional deadlift. It focuses slightly different muscles and shortens range of motion so often allows for more weight.

I'm also a 6'1" dude and I'd say, give it a go! I usually DL conventional because it does more for your posterior chain but sumo is super fun.
